The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. and all people seated at the front table were introduced. Several board members, AKC officers and parliamentarian were present. There was an immediate balloting for standing committee members for various committees and terms. A report was given by the President, CFO and Chairman of the Board. Alan Kalter, President reported on the USDA/APHIS status, the FEMA dog rescue program, the addition of a Search and Rescue title to be awarded by AKC and the status of USAR – urban search and rescue – with infor-mation regarding the different skills used in disaster search. Peter Farnsworth, CEO reported an immediate uptick in several but mostly reported the great loss of all versions of registrations and income from 2008 to 2012. Not included were the quarterly breakdowns offered by the previ-ous CEO. Voting was to take place on the amended amendment to deal with consecutive and exclusivity of a territory when clubs are not giving shows in their own area. An eventual motion was made to send this to the dog show rules committee and the motion carried. Voting also occurred to add Reserve BIS to the required ribbons, prizes and trophies section of the rule book and the motion passed. Voting also took place to add a three point major of reserve winners dog and reserve winners bitch at a national specialty (one show to be designated per year ) with the stipulation that the entry must be double that of a five point major for the division in which the show is being held with an effective date of 1-3-2013. Motion passed. Report regarding the search for a new CEO, initial candidates have been short-listed and a decision will be made in a few weeks. 25 year delegate medallions were presented to Gretchen Bernardi, Charles Schaefer, Robert Jaggers Jr. and Harold Sundstrom. The American Foxhound Club, Middlesex KC, Pacific Coast Boston Terrier Club and Bulldog Club of America were recognized for 100 years of membership with AKC. On Monday, September the standing committees met and I attended the All-Breed Committee, Dog Show Rules Committee, the Show-Cancellation sub-committee Meeting and the General Caucus. On Tuesday, September 11 morning I attended the Legislative Caucus and the Forum – Social Media Made Easy. Minutes for each of these meetings are available upon request but too lengthy to print in their entirety. Respectfully submitted, Wayne Harmon

Getting to Know You! Kennel Name: Topline Owners: Tim and Nancy Bergeron Breed: Shar-Pei Started: 1986 Tim and Nancy first fell in love with the Shar-Pei breed when they saw a Shar-Pei on the television show Hillstreet Blues in the late 1980's. Tim was determined that was going to be their dog. They had dogs for many years, mostly hunting dogs. The breed was very rare at the time and was not easy to locate. The found a breeder in Northern Minnesota and brought home their first Shar-Pei in 1986. It wasn't until January 1988, the Shar-Pei was admitted into the Miscellaneous Group of the AKC. This was the first step in the movement of the CSPCA getting recognition for the Shar-Pei by the AKC. Later, in 1992, the Chinese Shar-Pei was moved into the Non-Sporting group of the AKC, finally allowing the breed to compete for certification points, and to obtain the title of “Champion” The Bergeron's were excited about entering their rare Shar-Pei puppy in the AKC show ring and did so in their first dog show, at the Minneapolis dog show in 1986. It was a Fun Puppy Match and their puppy took Best in Show. They were hooked and have enjoyed showing and breeding Shar-Pei's ever since. They joined the National Club and our Cambridge Minnesota Kennel Club (CMKC) and are very active in both. Tim is the current President of the CMKC and has been in this position for approximately 15 years. Topline Kennel has breed and owned many Champions over the years. One of their favorite dogs was Bacchus, who has passed on. In both 2001 and 2002 Bacchus was the #2 Shar-Pei in the US. .

When asked what do you like about this breed, Tim replied, "they are a wash and wear dog". "They are low maintenance, very smart and a great family dog". "They are easily house trained by 6 to 7 weeks old and they are a very loyal dog." The Shar-Pei according to Tim, because of their loyalty to their family, is not easy to rehome. A must in getting this breed is to make sure they are well socialized. They can be stand offish and they are known as the "silent guard dog". They sit quietly until the right moment to take down an intruder.

The breed is prone to allergies and Enthropia. They are also subject to Shar-Pei Syndrome in which a condition causing a high fever early on, affects their kidneys and can cause death. The breed has an av-erage life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Tim enjoys showing and Nancy takes care of the books and the pedigrees. Tim is an AKC Judge for the Bull Terrier and Shar-Pei breeds, as well as a Junior Handler Judge. The Bergeron's are very active in Foster Care for children. They have adopted Brianna two years ago from Foster Care, she is now 19 years old and they are working on adopting their Foster son Grant, who is 5 years old. For more information about the breed and the history of the breed, please visit this AKC website here. Thank you Tim and Nancy for sharing a bit about yourself and your dogs. If you would like to be interviewed for our next CMKC issue, please contact Theresa Goiffon at [email protected]. We are looking forward interviewing all of our CMKC members!
