5 Tips to Close the Maintenance Knowledge Gap
Every maintenance manager wishes they could simply train their staff once on CMMS and everyone would be set for life.
Sadly, that’s not the case. CMMS training isn’t a one-time thing. It’s an always thing.
In fact, the lessons you teach your staff begin to wear off and the decline in knowledge is actually measurable.
Sam McNair, a senior consultant with Life Cycle Engineering, approximates that within about 30 months of training, the level of maintenance expertise among his staff falls by about 50%.

It’s critical to train for effective management of work orders, preventive maintenance, and safety concerns to create an environment where employees are rarely caught unaware.

All new maintenance workers need a consistent orientation to the company, their jobs, and their CMMS so they
are able to quickly and effectively fill their roles. A well-rounded onboarding process avoids many of the pitfalls that come with the misunderstanding of policies and procedures.

Develop a team approach4No single employee can be the maintenance hero every time. Employee turnover, PTO, and reassignments create gaps that can prove hard to fill on a day-to-day basis. Providing opportunities to train together to know the full range of tools and techniques available can provide the backup needed when a challenging situation arises.

Encourage continual improvement5Changes in workplace procedures and technologies will require employees to constantly develop new skills to grow with the company. Regular, advanced training opportunities – leading to certificates and credentials –motivate employees to make themselves more innovative in their approach to problem-solving while making them more effective at enhancing the company’s profitability. These certifications can also be required by third-party memberships and certain insurance policies.
