In California medical practices of one to 50 physicians are

the mainstay of health care delivery and make up the lion’s

share of the safety net – without them, more of the state’s

already overwhelmed emergency departments would be

forced to close. For this and myriad other reasons it is

essential that we focus on the needs of these physicians

and help them to thrive in the rapidly changing health care

industry. CMA’s online education program is one tangible

way that we are helping to ensure the economic stability of

these physicians.

Access to timely,

high-quality

education and

training is an

essential lifeline

as they struggle to keep up with an ever changing and

absurdly complex health care payment system and its

increasing administrative costs. To meet the educational

needs of physician members and their sta we continue

to expand the cost-e ective use of live online webinar

training.

Now in its third

year, CMA’s

online education

program

continues

to receive

consistently high

ratings on post

event exit surveys.

In 2012 we o ered

41 events with

registration

topping 5100,

a 44% increase

over the previous year. Over three years we hosted 108

webinars attracting over 11,000 registrants. Our On-

Demand Webinar Library boasts a catalogue of nearly 100

previously recorded programs covering a wide variety of

important topics.

CMA’s 2013 Educational Program will o er over 60

webinars, including topics such as ICD-10 training, coding

certifi cation, meaningful use, the A ordable Care Act, fraud

and abuse, and a host of other important issues.

CMA also continues to o er live seminars and is eager to

work with local counties to host events.

Our plans for 2013 also include:

• Centralize education off erings across CMA centers

• Provide monthly webinar attendance reports

• Develop and provide high-quality marketing materials

• Improve use of data to increase membership and

retention

Finally, we thank all of you for your support of this

important member benefi t and welcome your comments

and suggestions.

W e b i n a r W o r ks h o p S e r i e s Evaluation and management (E&M) visits account for more than 50 percent of revenue in most primary-care practices. In recent years, Medicare reimbursement for E&M visits across specialties added up to more than 1 percent of the entire federal budget.

Accurate, comprehensive, patient-centered documentation and record keeping is a fundamental part of clinical practice. Understanding the principles and guidelines of E&M coding is essential for everyone involved in billing and will ensure each

service is reported correctly.

The California Medical Association (CMA) is hosting a four-part series of FREE E&M workshops presented by PalmettoGBA. The workshops are 1½ hour each, spread over four-days and are designed for physicians, nonphysician practitioners and other staff involved in the coding and billing process. Attendees will receive a downloadable workbook from the Palmetto’s Provider

Outreach and Education team.
