VINEYARD NOTES Appellation: IGP Vaucluse (Indication Geographique Protégée Vaucluse) Name: La Verriere Age of Vines: 60 years Size of Vineyard: 30 hectares (74 acres) under cultivation Exposure: Northwest-facing slopes Elevation: 530 meters (1,739 feet) Density: 4,300 vines/hectare (1,740 vines/acre) Soil: Clay and limestone, very stony Pruning Method: Double cordon de Royat, 6 shoots per cordon Viticulture: Organic and biodynamic practices Harvest Dates: September 28October 24 Yields: 27 hl/ha (2 tons/acre) 2016 VINTAGE NOTES The 2016 harvest endured a wet winter and rainy spring, but an arid summer. Although two big rainfalls caused some concern during the harvest months, the majority of September and October was mostly sunny and dry, which created perfect conditions for the rosé. WINE NOTES Fermentation: Direct press, skin contact at time of pressing for 1.5 hours; very cold fermentation for 5 weeks, 75% in stainless-steel tanks, 25% in French oak barrels Aging: 25% of the wine was aged for 3 months in French oak barrels; mix of new and one-year-old with light toast Fining: With green pea powder Filtration: Tangential Bottled: February 28, 2017 Varietals: 67% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Rolle Alcohol: 13% TA: 5.8g/L pH: 3.3 Cases Produced: 3,800 (6/750ml) Cases Imported: 1,300 TASTING NOTES Appearance: Clear, pale rose pink Nose: Strawberries and citrus with hints of jasmine blossom Palate: Expressive summer fruits, fresh, full-bodied, crisp and long on the finish 2016 ROSÉ Imported by Wilson Daniels | Saint Helena, California | wilsondaniels.com ‘Chêne Bleu’ means blue oak tree which forms the centerpiece of the label and which stands guard over the vines in real life (a centuries old oak tree that died during a drought and has now been painted with Bordeaux Mixture and sculpted into a beautiful shape. The picture on the label surrounding it is filled with many of the elements that make the wine and the project unique. Embedded in the drawing are dozens of references to what defines Chêne Bleu, taking into account the property’s history, its terroir, the cast of characters, values and philosophy.
