Assignment Brief

Introduction

In this assignment, we are require to do a literature research on places of interest of

your site visit. From the literature review, we are to study the theme given and its

connection between the historical, architectural and social aspects of the place. We

have to document the research that we have done in an A5 small booklet base on our

theme and show it by graphical way.

Concept & Theme

Theme- Architecture of British Colonial building

Concept – pattern and texture of British Colonial building

Pattern and texture is an artistic or decorative design. Each type of building has their

own awesome pattern and texture design no matter it is old stylish house, modern

house and so on. But normally this type of pattern doesn’t notice much by people

nowadays because people nowadays probably only spend much of their time on

online social networking service such as Facebook, Twitter and others. So this book is

basically showing people about British Colonial building’s special patterns and

textures.

Location

Place Choosen – Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city in Malaysia, somehow it has also many unforgettable

history. The reason why I choose Kuala Lumpur is because it is one of the famous

place that has occupied by British in the olden century. Because of this Kuala Lumpur

has plenty of British heritage buildings which have wonderful texture and beautiful

pattern but they are unnoticed by people nowadays.

The Building that I have choose –

1) Sultan Abdul Samad Building

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is located in front of the Dataran

Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club, by Jalan

Raja in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The structure takes its name from Sultan

Abdul Samad, the reigning sultan of Selangor at the time when construction

began. It was designed by A.C. Norman and built in 1894-1897 to house

several important government departments during the British administration.

A.C. Norman spent time in Africa and saw Muslim mosques in India which

led him to use Mughal architecture in the building's design. The 41-meter

tower chimed for the first time to coincide with Queen Victoria’s Jubilee

Parade in 1897 and has chimed since. The building, simply known

as Government Offices in early Kuala Lumpur maps, housed the Federal

Secretariat of the then-Federated Malay States which was formed in 1896.

2) Kuala Lumpur Railway Station Berhad

Formerly known as the Malayan Railway Administration, it later became

known as KTMB, or Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad. The railway system

dates back to the British colonial era, when it was first built to transport tin.

Fares were generally reasonable, but the low speed of the intercity trains did

not make them competitive with other modes of transportation. The building

was also designed by A.B Hubback, the same architect who designed the Old

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. It was completed in 1917, after works were

halted during World War One. It also incorporates the Mughal style of

architecture, just as the building on the opposite side of the road. The building

suffered bombing in its North Wing during the Second World War, and in

1968, the second floor was gutted by fire. In 1983, the building was gazetted

as a heritage site.

3) Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is a railway station located in Kuala

Lumpur, Malaysia.It designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a British

Architectural Assistant to the Director of Public Works based on The "Neo-

Moorish/Mughal/Indo-Saracenic/Neo-Saracenic" style. This style was not

uncommon at the time, such as Sultan Abdul Samad also build based on this

design. This building completed in 1910 to replace an older station on the

same site, the station was Kuala Lumpur's railway hub in the city for

the Federated Malay States Railways and Malayan Railway , before Kuala

Lumpur Sentral assumed much of its role in 2001. The station is notable for its

architecture, adopting a mixture of Eastern and Western designs.

The theme and my places

“Pattern and texture of British Colonial Building”

Why I do on pattern and texture? It is because the wonderful pattern and texture in

these British Colonial Building has left out by people nowadays. These pattern and

texture basically has their own meaning and clearly show the style of the connection

of British Colonial and Muslim stylish. For example the different arches that I have

seen through the journey when I doing this assignment has represent the pattern of

British style. We can also get to know the lifestyle and behavior of them through these

building by looking of their design. Besides, I try to concentrate on British Colonial

building because British colonial buildings have their own different special style

compare to building nowadays. In the other hand, many people who didn’t have went

to England also can know the pattern of British stylish through this book. Basically I

make this simple theme is because I hope the reader can easily understand what is

bring out and showing in this book. So that reader won’t confuse when they are

looking this graphical book and refuse to read at last.
