For example, the famous PISA tests show that, in almost all countries, students whose parents read to them as they were entering school had higher reading scores at age 15. That’s pretty significant that by reading to your pre-schooler they will be better readers at age 15 than students who weren’t read to. It’s all about helping your child to become familiar with books, know how to navigate their way around a book and ha ving meaningful conversations about the stories. This should continue into the early years of school. Children need to listen to and talk about the meaning of books. Conversations about the books you read with your children could include: Asking your child to predict what might happen next in the story Relate the story to your child’s experiences Asking your child to retell the story or to visualise some of the scenes Ask what might have happened if…… Encourage your child to ask questions about the text Encourage your child to make up his or her own stories, or add to the story in the text. NEWCASTLE PERMANENT MATHEMATICS COMPETITION – OUTSTANDING RESULTS Congratulations to Theodore Brown who was placed first overall in the Year 6 Division of the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition. This is a truly outstanding achievement and we congratulate Theodore on this accomplishment. We look forward to Theodore formally receiving his prize at a presentation to be held at Hunter Stadium next week. Congratulations are also extended to Jeremy Beale, who received a High Distinction in the competition, earning him a Central Coast district award, and to Madeline James who placed 22th and Eloise Cliff who placed 69th overall in the Year 6 division. The total number of student participating was 18,157 from 311 schools.

JAZZ BAND It was a pleasure to welcome Neilsen Gough and his jazz band to the Junior School on Monday. Neilsen is one of Australia’s most celebrated and accomplished trumpet players. Neilsen and his band performed a concert for our Year 2 – 6 students, which is a helpful step towards us establishing a School Band in the Junior School. Neilsen, along with Saxophonist, Luke Gallen, are both now accepting enrolments for private tuition. Neilsen is offering brass and vocal tuition and Luke is offering saxophone and clarinet tuition. To enroll your child for instrumental tuition, please download a Tuition Program Enrolment Form from Parent Lounge.

PEER SUPPORT Peer Support sessions are continuing to run each week. The focus this week was the concept of ‘types of friends’. Children explored what encourages them to form friendships with different people, considering common interests and admirable qualities etc. Through various activities, children will identify that their friends can fall in to the categories of ‘best friends’, ‘friends’, and ‘people we know’. The children also discussed the fact that friendships can change over time for various reasons. It could be helpful for you to discuss with your child the different friends they have in their lives and how friendships may change. Some friends may be more important than others at different times in their lives. In Week 5, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks and the role that friends play in each others’ lives. Children will construct a visual representation of this during the session. Encourage your child to identify friends they have who can provide support to them if the need arises.

ICAS UNSW MATHEMATICS AND SPELLING COMPETITION It is pleasing to report that I received the official results for the 2015 ICAS Mathematics and Spelling Competitions sat earlier this year. Our students received particularly pleasing results again with a number of students receiving High Distinctions, Distinctions, Credits and Merits. These outstanding results are even more impressive when taken in the context that an ever-increasing number of schools across Australia are using ICAS as an activity for selected students only, most likely those involved in Gifted and Talented Programs.

Reminder to parents of Year 2 and Year 6 that you will need to reapply for bus and train passes for your child going

into Year 3 and Year 7 in 2016. A new system will come into effect in November this year, where parents will need to

apply online for a School Transport Opal Card. We will email this link home to all Year 2 & 6 families as soon as we

have the information.

Existing students in K-1, 3-5 & 7-12 will automatically get their new card next year.

THE JUNIOR SCHOOL LOST PROPERTY BOX is overflowing! Many of the items have been bought from the

second hand uniform shop and do not have the name of the current owner on them. Any sad and lonely item

remaining in the lost property box at the end of the term will be “gifted” back to the 2nd Hand Uniform shop. Please remember – if you buy a jumper from the 2nd Hand Uniform shop that previously belonged to a student

who has left the school, put your child’s name on it!

JS CHESS CLUB NEWS

Lakes Grammar Chess Club competed in the HRIS chess day held at Avondale School last week. The team played very well and also looked for opportunities to help organisers set boards and show polite behaviour to all the adults and peers attending. The day was highlighted in a number of ways for Lakes including having the youngest player being Brodie Lewis from Year 1 who drew a number of games competing against students as old as Year 6.

Our most successful team was comprised of four players who played exceptionally well. The strongest player on the day was Ashley Pernecker who claimed 6 games and drew her final. Abbey Wardrope was close behind, only conceding one of her games and to consider that Abbey is in Year 4 while most of her opponents are in Year 6 continues to amaze me. Anu Adikarimudiyanselage won the majority of his games but our player who drew the biggest crowds was Jeremy Beale; with many long and difficult games it was not uncommon to see

20 students and adults standing around watching him play. This team took second place overall on the day conceding to Newcastle Grammar by two points overall.

Students who attended are: Patrick Fitzsimmons, Jake Richards, Daniel Palibino, Anu Babu, Abbey Wardrope, Ashley Pernecker, Anu Adikarimudiyanselage, Jeremy Beale, Jackson Roffey, Jaden Garvey, Lachlan Carmichael, Liam Moore, Diluk Adikarimudiyanselage, Kai Garvey, Bailey Brooker, Brodie Lewis The other schools competing were Newcastle Grammar, Avondale, Heritage College, Bishop Tyrrell, St Phillips Waratah, St Columba, Central Coast Adventist, St Phillips Port Stephens, Calrossy and Scone Grammar.

If you are interested in your child playing chess please email me at [email protected] for more information.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT Matt’s Mutterings The other day I was at the shops and said hello to one of our students who was in their uniform. Being a young girl from our Junior School I don’t think she was quite sure who this weird bloke was saying hello to her and her dad at the checkout. It was the dad’s look though that really struck me. His eyes said in no uncertain terms, “I’m watching you buster and if you come near my daughter I will snap you in two like a twig!” And trust me, this dad would have been able to do that easily. This whole encounter actually gave me great comfort knowing that this particular dad was so protective. As a father of 3 girls I fully understand this emotion.

The reason I wanted to share with you this story is because in the past the Anglican Church has failed to protect children from predators. The Royal Commission investigating institutional abuse has brought out into the open some of the despicable acts perpetrated against children who were in the care of the Anglican Church and, in particular, our Diocese of Newcastle. Our Bishops have worked very hard to shed light on past practices which led to these events happening and leading our Diocese forward in healing. Many of the survivors of abuse are my age and older and their stories are only just coming out now. We as a diocese can’t change what happened, but we have repented and changed practices which allowed these things to go on.

At Lakes Grammar we have in place practices that protect our children. We need to remain vigilant in keeping our kids safe. Jesus said you would be better off dead than leading a little one astray (see Luke 17:2 if you don’t believe me). Across the diocese people are being encouraged to contact our director of professional standards, the police or the Royal Commission if you have information regarding abuse no matter how long ago it may have happened. Please check out this website if you want to know more: http://newcastleanglicanhealthyfuture.com/ Bless ya!

WILD FIG BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION

This year Lakes Grammar - An Anglican School was invited to submit a Year 11 students’ Business Plan in the 2015 Wild Fig Yes Awards Program. Each year Wild Fig Service Alliance, a not for profit organisation consisting of members representing some of the most dynamic businesses on the Central Coast, holds a competition for Year 11 students to submit a plan for an entrepreneurial business idea. Due to the high standard of Business Plans submitted this year by Year 11 students, Mr Jones and Miss MacKillop had the difficult decision to select just one to represent the school. Madison Liddle’s Business Plan for Simple Gifting was selected, as we felt that this plan demonstrated a high level of originality and creativity while clearly meeting a community need. Simple Gifting is an easily accessible and personalised online shopping service allowing consumers to select gifts, which are wrapped and delivered to your home or business, this business is designed to help time poor people purchase gifts from a range of well-known brands from one convenient website.

Madison during her pitch for Simple Gifting at the Wild Fig Service Alliance Breakfast Meeting

Madison’s Business Plan, along with numerous other entries from schools across the Central Coast was judged by a panel of Cen tral Coast Business representatives including Bruce Cottrill - Principal of CtechBA, a boutique private equity firm in Sydney, Barbara Ketley Principal of Marketing agency Milestone Bellanova, Rod and Karen Evans the Principals of Trilogy Professional Group an accounting practice based in Erina, and Phaedra Pym - Principal of a copywriting business based on the Central Coast. She was selected as a finalist, one of six on the Central Coast.

As a finalist she was invited to presented a 3 minute business pitch to the members of Wild Fig Service Alliance which was judged by five esteemed Central Coast business representatives; The pitches were presented to the judges and members of the Wild Fig Service Alliance at a breakfast meeting at Terrigal on the 15 October.

The six finalists presented a range of business ideas including: a student from Wyong High School with a Hybrid Guitar store, St Phillips Gosford with a party planning app to assist with the hosting of events, Gosford High School with an entertainment restaurant venue in Gosford, Terrigal High School with a holistic approach to sports management and training service and finally MacKillop College with a sleeping pod service to provide rest for travellers at busy international airports. Madison’s pitch was professionally presented, she demonstrated a clear understanding of the risks and requirements in establishing a small business. She followed this up with thoughtful responses to the questions asked by Freya Cottrill, a representative from Wild Fig.

On Thursday, 12 November three finalists will be presented with awards; 1st Place will win $1000 plus $1000 worth of Apple products

for their school and the two runners up will receive $300 and $200 respectively. We would like to congratulate Madison for this wonderful achievement and will share the results of the Wild Fig Yes Awards Program in a future newsletter.
