Here is a picture of Toronto Italia taken at Scarborough's Birchmount Stadium Monday September 2nd, 1996 before the special exhibition game with the CNSL All Stars. Italia have a special guest player, former World Cup hero Diego Maradona from Argentina. He's in the bottom row beside the man in the suit, team owner Pasquale Fioccola. Two players to the left of Diego is his brother Lalo Maradona and the little boy in front of him is Diego Maradona (the oldest son of Lalo).

How the Championships will be awarded this year is a bit different. The three trophies are for: League Championship...First place in the League standings at the end of the season wins it. (same as last year). 1996 winner: Toronto Italia Cup Championship...First place in the Cup standings at the end of the season wins this (last year there was a two game playoff between the 1st and 2nd place teams). 1996 winner: St Catharines Wolves Playoff Championship...The 1st to 4th place teams in the combined League and Cup standings are placed in these games. (Last year it was the top four teams of just the League standings). 1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd, in two game series with winners playing each other. Playoff Champions...Toronto Italia

Friday night November 8th, 1996 at the Hollywood Princess Banquet Hall in the City of Vaughan.

Attendance was almost 400 people which if this was a soccer game, would have made any of the teams proud. Dinner was served at 8:00pm.

Alfonso Ciasca was the Master of Ceremony and opening speeches were given by President Peter Li Preti and Commissioner Michael Di Biase.

The Awards : - Most disiplined team: London City Given to the team that had the fewest yellow and red cards issued throughout the season. None from the team was there to accept the award. - Coach of the Year: Peter Pinizzotto (Toronto Italia)

- Most Valuable Player: Michele Gioia (Toronto Italia) - Top Goal Scorer: Michele Gioia (Toronto Italia) - Goalie of the Year: Joe Ciaravino (Toronto Italia) (Michele Gioia) - Rookie of the Year: Gus Kouzmanis (Toronto Supra) - Referee of the Year: Manuel Orlana - Manager of the Year: Joe Mallozzi (Toronto Italia) - President of the Year: Pasquale Fioccola (Toronto Italia) - Best Public Relations Director: Sergio Giancola (Toronto Supra) - Most Improved Team: North York Talons

1997 CNSL Season

The season ended last year with seven teams:

1. Toronto Italia 2. St Catharines Wolves 3. Toronto Supra 4. Oakville Canadian Westerns 5. London City 6. Scarborough Astros 7. North York Talons

The A-League expanded to Toronto when the Lynx were formed. The Lynx hired Italia's

coach Peter Pinizzotto and players Franco Spadafina, Luca Centurione, Joe Ciaravino and

Phil Caporrella. Toronto Italia will not be operating in 1997. Oakville Canadian Westerns

is not operating neither.

The 6th and 7th place teams merged, combining their rosters. They will keep the name

North York Talons.

The CISL (Puma League) folded. The three teams joining up with the CNSL are Kosova

Albanians, Toronto Croatia (logo below) and Hamilton White Eagles. The White Eagles

are back in the CNSL after a one year absence. Another team from the CISL that was

expected to join but dropped out near the last minute was Caribbean Stars.

The seven teams operating for the 1997 season are:
