INTRODUCTION

If an organization or company is looking to invest some of its resources in a co-branded

credit card program, it should take the time to learn everything that the program offers. A co-

3

branded credit card program allows a company to offer credit cards to its customers that has the

company's logo and name on the card. Each time the customer uses the card to make a purchase;

he or she is reminded of the company that issued the card. This branding can help an

organization to maintain a competitive edge over other companies. Many of the cards that are

offered as part of the co-branded credit program can be used just as any other credit card is used.

If the customer is happy with the services provided by the credit card you are offering, word of

mouth advertising can help to increase your customer base. Many of the co-branded credit

programs available on the market can work to help your company but they can also hurt your

company if they are the wrong match for your customers. Research the information available and

you will have the best resources necessary to help you to make the right choice in co-branded

credit card programs.

Co-branded cards account for one-third of MasterCard's U.S. card base and 20% of

Visa's. As the inebriant of the power of plastic wears off, sophisticated consumers need to

carefully review the costs and benefits associated with these cards. Understand that credit cards

serve two basic purposes: one, a means of payment, and two, a source of credit.

About one-third of credit card users use them as a method of payment and pay the

balance in full each month. Those consumers able to wipe the slate clean every month are

generally in the higher income brackets. With credit card interest rates going as high as 20%, the

benefit to the holder is an immediate savings on interest rates. The largest percentages of credit

cardholders, however, are installment users who consider credit cards an alternative method of

financing and carry a balance from month to month.

4

Important Things to Check before Going to a Co-Branded Credit Card

Standard credit card

All banks and creditor companies have standard credit card offers you can apply for.

These packages are basic ones, and this means that there are no rewards programs included.

These types of credit cards, also called Classic, provide primary services like cash advances,

making balance transfers, and purchasing goods or services.

Although there are no extra benefits, in the introductory period there might be some

limited offers such as low or no interest rates on purchases and balance transfers. Keep in mind

that in order to apply, you have to be at least 18 years old. The credit application form needs to

be filled out with the accurate information, and honesty is important when you need to answer

questions about your personal and financial status. Finding a standard credit card with features to

suit your needs is not as hard as it seems. Banks have various attractive offers, but make sure to

check the interest rates and other details of the promotions. The time spent to select the credit

card that matches your needs will certainly pay off when you will start enjoying its benefits.

Keep in mind that the credit you receive should be paid back accordingly, and respect

repayment deadlines to avoid penalties or extra charges that might occur in the next month. This

way you can start building up a good credit history, and later on you can apply for cards with

special rewards programs or bonus points. In case you consider that you have a good credit

history and you would be eligible for another type of card, make sure to look for the best credit

card offers and choose the ones with lowest interest rates and suiting rewards programs.

Instant approval credit cards

Technology nowadays allows you to do almost anything online: pay bills, shop online,

make transactions, and the list continues. But all these are not possible unless you own a

credit card.

That piece of plastic has become a quintessential tool for our everyday life.

5

There are basically two ways one can apply for a credit card: one is the usual way by

going to your local bank, and the other is by completing an application form online.

In the case of instant approval cards, there are a few steps to be taken: fill out the

application form, send it and have a little patience until your answer arrives.

In case your credit card is a co-brand between the issuer bank and British Airways for

example, and if you happen to be a frequent flyer, there you go, enjoy the discounts and extra

services they offer you in return for your “fidelity”. Think twice before you opt for just any co-

branded card. See to it that it is really in your advantage if you do so, meaning don’t choose it

unless it is necessary.

It may attract you the fact that most of these cards offer you the advantage that there is a

very low interest rate for the introductory period (which is 6 to 12 months usually). Don’t forget

to check what interest rates they charge after this period is up. Co-branded cards, like any other

type of credit cards, serve as a mean of payment and a source of credit as well.

Co-branded credit cards are often mentioned along affinity cards, and the similarity of

them comes from the fact that both represent a sort of a connection between a company or

organization and the customer. While having a co-branded card will reward you for being loyal

to a certain company, by opting for an affinity card you can donate a small percentage of your

purchases to an organization that fights for a cause you agree with.

Manage your finances wisely, and if you opt for a credit card, read their terms and

conditions carefully so that advantage will be on your side. Never choose one just because the

brand sounds appealing to you, but make sure you are a loyal client of the respective brand

which has also proved useful to you and your family over the years.

Credit cards for Bad credit

Many people find it hard to get a credit card because of a poor credit rating, even if

they are currently free from accumulated debt. Because of a history of bad debt, they

6

are refused credit cards, thus denying them a whole range of opportunities, from

flight bookings to online shopping.

Recently, many companies are seeing the possibilities in extending credit cards for

bad credit to certain people. These companies specialize in credit cards for bad debt,

with the aim of gradually improving a person’s credit rating. Generally speaking

these bad credit cards have high rates of interest.

This discourages people from missing payments by making it very expensive to do

so. These companies keep in contact with hundreds of credit bureaus, recording your

monthly payments.

By keeping up with your payments on your credit card for bad credit, therefore, you are

slowly improving your reputation with these credit bureaus, and eventually clearing the way for

you to be approved for a standard credit card to replace your credit card for bad credit.

Other credit cards for bad credit work by collecting more frequently than other cards – for

example, weekly repayments. In this sense, the credit cards for bad credit function like small

loans rather than the traditional credit card model. The urgency of the repayments along with the

routine of paying every week encourages people to keep up to date and ensures they don’t miss

payment on the credit card for bad credit.

There are a few disadvantages one should be aware of however. Many companies will try

to charge high initial fees and start up charges on the account. Others attempt to charge you for

setting up an account and saddle you with initial debt already built up on the card that you must

pay back or face interest payments on. You should completely avoid such companies as there are

many similar free programs for credit cards for bad credit out there.

Shop around to find the best credit card for bad credit for you. Often companies have a

one minute online eligibility test which can see if you qualify for their credit card for bad credit.

This makes research what programs you can get into a very easy and achievable goal. Some

companies specialize in credit cards for bad credit. As mentioned above, be careful you are not

ripped off, but do not be put off by this – many of the companies offering credit cards for bad

7

credit are perfectly legitimate ways to escape your history of bad debt.

Credit cards for bad credit are therefore a somewhat drastic tool to repair your credit

rating. Keeping up with the program can restore your credit rating, but the penalties are tough,

and you must be sure you can keep up the payments. Nevertheless, for someone with a bad

rating, credit cards for bad credit are a reasonable solution (and often the only solution) to their

worries. Hopefully, a little while after your application, you will be on your way to being not

only debt free, but free of the burden of past debt too.

Specialty credit card

Credit card companies often try to attract specific groups of customers through specialty

credit cards, which offer specific benefits to customers using certain services or spending

in certain areas, including cash back and discounts. Many universities around the world

produce alumni credit cards in association with the big credit card companies, which

donate a certain amount to the customer’s alma mater each time they are used.

This kind of card, targeted at a specific group is called an affinity card.

These specialty credit cards can be very rewarding if you find the right one for you, so

why not see which ones are on offer that suit you!

Some companies may even issue their own specialty credit card which offers discounts on their

product in particular.

Many specialty credit cards offered by the big companies (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are

simply more competitive versions of their standard cards. As more and more companies enter the

market, competition for customers steadily increases, and companies will offer more and more

special offers. For example, many credit cards now offer air miles, gift certificates or money

back (sometimes 1% of your purchases are refunded to you with your bill – making it possible

for credit cards to be even cheaper than cash if always paid off). These types of credit card are

certainly worth looking into.

8

Of course, there are many other kinds of specialty cards aside from these ones that we

focused on – student credit cards, business credit cards, etc. Credit card companies are eager to

specialize in many areas to attract as many potential customers as possible so there is bound to

be a specialty credit card for you. Why not take a look at our offers and see what specialty credit

card is right for you. You could save a lot of money, or help your favorite cause!

According to MasterCard, 55 percent of all credit card spending occurs on co-branded credit

cards. Co-branded credit cards benefit the issuing credit card company, the organization that is

represented on the credit card and the cardholder.

WHAT IS A CO-BRANDED CREDIT CARD?

A co-branded credit card is issued by a traditional credit card company or bank in

conjunction with another organization such as a university, business or charity. The

organization's logo is on the credit card. The credit card company handles all of the traditional

services such as processing transactions, billing the cardholder and receiving payments.

Benefits to the Credit Card Company

The credit card company benefits from co-branding because cardholders and prospective

cardholders have a existing affiliation with the organization. The organization that co-brands the

credit card often gives the credit card company its customer or member list for marketing

purposes. Marketing a credit card is much easier as a result of the affiliation that people have to

the organization. Also, cardholders tend to be more loyal because of their affiliation to the

organization.

Benefits to the Organization

The organization that co-brands a credit card often receives monetary compensation from

the credit card company for allowing its name to be used on a credit card. Normally, the

organization receives a small percentage of the credit card charges.

9

Benefits to the Cardholder

Many corporations offer discounts and rewards for their products and services to the

cardholders of co-branded credit cards. Cardholders of university and charity co-branded credit

cards have the benefit of knowing that the purchases they make on the credit card benefit the

organization.

Warning to Cardholders

Although a cardholder may receive monetary benefits as a result of discounts and

rewards, the cardholder must always be sure that the benefits they receive are worth the costs

associated with the credit card. If the credit card requires an annual membership fee or charges a

high interest rate, the cardholder may do better by switching to another credit card.

CO-BRANDED Vs AFFINITY CARDS

Definitions:

In talking about the co-branded credit card industry, you will no doubt come across two types of

programs in the marketplace: co-branded and affinity. Some definition for each:

Co-branded card programs: Bank partners with a marketing partner (e.g. airline, hotel) to

issue a general purpose credit card. The value proposition (i.e. reward currency) is usually

generated back to the end user (you the cardholder).A co-branded credit card is sponsored by

both the issuing bank and a retail organization, such as a department store or an airline. With co-

branded credit cards, cardholders may get benefits, such as discounts or free merchandise, from

the sponsoring merchant.

Affinity card program: Pure affinity cards are similar to co-branded cards, except that the

bank's marketing partner is typically a charity, an association, educational institution or a similar

10

organization for which consumers would have a partiality. The end user receives no tangible

benefit for using the card. Each purchase on the card results in a donation to the organization

(usually very small percentage). These days, affinity cards are beginning to straddle the two

concepts (i.e. affinity and co-brand). An affinity card is a credit card offered in conjunction with

two organizations, one a card issuer and the other a nonfinancial group with which consumers

have an affinity. Universities, sports franchises and nonprofit organizations are examples of

affinity groups that often offer special discounts or deals for using their credit cards issued in

partnership with a major bank.
