Athletics at Brentwood continues to thrive with the commitment and dedication from all staff and athletes and the development of our excellent facilities.

Athletics

All sporting activities available at the Senior School are designed to allow students to participate recreationally or compete in a variety of fixtures including friendly competition against local or foreign opponents or indeed contest regional/national competitions.

While winning can be determined by physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first, or by the view of judges who are scoring technical/artistic elements of the sporting performance, we primarily aim to maintain or improve our students’ physical ability and skills, whilst providing the opportunity to develop a variety of attributes such as perseverance, communication, aesthetic appreciation and teamwork.

The School Chess Club runs every Thursday lunchtime in L20 in the Main School and is staffed by Mr Acton, Mr Clements and Mr Walton.

It welcomes players of all abilities and ages, from beginners to county standard, from First to Sixth Formers. Some pupils can simply enjoy friendly games, whilst the more competitive can take part in the ladder competition where they can challenge others in an attempt to occupy their opponent’s rung on the ladder.

The possibility of playing with a chess clock encourages our players to think quickly and accurately and ramps up the tension as the minutes tick away.

In addition to games and matches, we run occasional popular problem-solving competitions with edible prizes. As part of the chess provision, we also organise three very popular House
