  • Tales from the Old Court HouseEdward Eyres : Part Two

As you may remember from the last issue, we left our story with the drunk-en convict Edward Eyres threatening in no uncertain terms to burn down Mr Buscombe’s stables. Mr Buscombe eventually found Eyres in the kitchen, using very coarse language (sadly not recorded) to Mrs Buscombe and making yet more threats. Accosted again by Mr Buscombe, Edward Eyres told him “I had better get rid of him at once”, and that if he didn’t, he would have something to be sorry for. Not surprisingly, Eyres ended up spending the night at the Richmond Gaol, before appearing at the Richmond Court House the following morning.

After witness testimony was heard, Eyres was promptly found guilty and sentenced to twelve months hard labour in chains at the New Town chain gang. This stint of hard labour seems to have had the desired effect; eventu-ally Edward Eyres gained his ticket of leave, and applied to marry Charlotte Craven. Like Eyres, Craven had been transported for theft (he was a house-breaker, whereas Charlotte was a pickpocket). Their marriage was approved by authorities in August 1846. And like so many convicts, their story – at least in the public record – ends about here.

And that’s all the more reason to continue looking through the voluminous records of the Richmond Court House.

They’re not in the majority, but there are a few cases involving female con-victs. In our next issue, we will attempt to unravel the full story of at least one of these female convicts from Richmond, and see where the story ends.

Richmond Arms Hotel celebrated their 190th anniversary last month. One of the oldest residence of the Coal River Valley, Miss Mary Crisp

aged 92 of “Seaton” Richmond, did the honor of cutting the cake. Miss Crisp has lived her whole life at ‘Seaton’ and has been involved with

the Red Cross for numerous decades. As a young girl Miss Crisp would ride a horse out to Richmond to

purchase bread for her family – and on some occasions the aroma of the fresh baked bread tempted her too much and by the time

she would be home (‘Seaton’ is about 5kms from Richmond towards Cambridge) the loaf would be hollowed out and just the crusts

remaining! Her father would then be very cross and have to crank up his T Model Ford and drive out to replace it.

The Red Cross Melbourne Luncheon organised by the Richmond Branch and held at the Football Clubrooms on the 7th November 2017 was a galloping success. Over 80 people enjoyed an afternoon of fun and entertainment which included Cup Quizzes, sweeps, raffles and Best on Field Fashions. Thank you to our Quiz Master and Judges and to all for entering into the spirit of the occasion and coming along in all your finery. $2,000.00 was raised to support the work of the Red Cross “Mates” Program in Tasmania which provides support to those socially isolated in re-connecting to their community by expanding their social networks and improving their self-esteem, quality of life and well-being.
