News from El Salvador

The need for COAR remains, as evidence:

The Department of State has issued this TravelWarning to inform U.S. citizens about the securitysituation in El Salvador.

Tens of thousands of U.S. citizens safely visit ElSalvador each year for study, tourism, business, and volunteer work. However, crime and violenceare serious problems throughout the country. In2011, El Salvador had the second highest murderrate in the world: 71 per 100,000 people (bycomparison, the murder rate in Massachusetts, with a similar geographical area and population, was 2.6 per 100,000). In 2012, a truce betweenEl Salvador’s two principal street gangscontributed to a decline in the homicide rate. However, the sustainability of the decline isunclear . . .

From the Peace Mission'sExecutive Director

Church and State and DevelopmentThe Catholic Church has always cared for the poor, both in countries that have a strong governmentsafety net and in countries where there is nogovernment safety net, and, in every form of church-government cooperation in between. The bestdevelopment model (that is, aid projects from outsidea country,) is to take direction from the people "onthe ground" who can direct that aid most effectively.COAR Peace Mission and COAR Children's Villagetake their operating instructions and spiritualguidance, both, from the Archbishop of San Salvador. That might have gotten lost in all the other newsand successes of something as dynamic as the COARChildren's Village, but it is as true now as it hasbeen from the beginning, when Archbishop OscarA. Romero inspired COAR's name and mission. Thanksfor taking this walk with us toward Easter andredemption, and the joy of protecting vulnerablechildren.
