Coarse grain probesGenerally speaking coarse grained material

is only to be tested using selected special

probes because the noise caused by the

grain structure in most cases reaches the

same indication amplitude as the echoes

from small refl ectors. There are therefore a

number of probes available, particularly for

testing austenitic welds, which, depending

on the test specimen, produce more or less

satisfactory results.

We have engaged ourselves very intensely

with this problem and have examined a

large range of test material using diffe-

rent focussed single crystal probes and

TR probes and whereby we were strongly

supported by the manufacturers of aus-

tenitic materials. The examination resul-

ted in the production of probes which, in

our experience, produce, on the average,

the best results.

With the examinations the probes were

primarily evaluated with regards to

having as large a signal to noise ratio as

possible i.e. the indications from refl ec-

tors should extend as far as possible

above the grain noise.

All the probes generate longitudinal

waves.
