Record-breaking numbers hit the trailfor 29th Annual Tweedsmuir X-Country Ski Race
Record breaking par-ticipation numbers saw 68 people out enjoying the 29th Annual Tweedsmuir Ski Club X-Country Ski Race Event on March 1st, 2015. We were back the original race distances after a two year stint of using laps of only the seven kilometre mead-ow loop due to unfavourable weather condition).
Participants skied either three, seven, 12 or 24 km and although there was little to no sun this year, we still had a good event as the temperature made for some great skiing conditions. Soup, hot drinks and potluck snacks after the race helped keep people warm as they waited for other skiers and the mug/trophy award pre-sentation.
The 40+ age category had the largest turnout this year with 21 participants followed closely by the 17-39 age group with 19 participants. We also had a great youth and kids turnout as well, with participa-tion prizes and treasure bins to help motivated the little ones! A big shout-out to the youngest participants – four-year old Eric Boileau, six-year old Morgan Boileau, and six-year old Seton Bernier for being the youngest skiers to complete the seven-kilometer loop!
A huge congratulations to Tim deGrace who was our overall winner this year with a 24 kilometre time of 1:58:12 followed closely by Grant McCartney with a time of 2:07:40
A big thank-you to every-one who helped out on race day, especially Lyle Enderud and Duane Pederson who tire-lessly groom our ski trails and keep them in topnotch shape. Thanks to Kyah Saban and Ralph for setting up and regis-tration, Lisa and John for time keeping, Alex and the Outdoor Ed kids for set up and take down, and Dave for manning the seven kilometre juice sta-tion.
It was wonderful to see so many people up enjoying the ski trails and event, thanks to everyone for participating and supporting the race. Hopefully we’ll see everyone next year for the 30th Annual Tweedsmuir X-Country Ski Race.

BY MONICA LAMB-YORSKIWILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNE
The six people charged in con-nection with the double homi-cide in Anahim Lake on Boxing Day are expected make to their next appearances in BC Supreme Court in Williams Lake on March 25, 2015.
The charges stem from an incident on Dec. 26 when the Anahim RCMP received a report at 11:53 p.m. that shots had been fired at a home in the 2,100 block of Dorsey Road in a rural area of Anahim Lake.
Upon arrival the police found 23-year-old Matthew Hennigar and 22-year-old Kalvin Andy both dead at the scene.
Hennigar was living in Anahim Lake at the time of his death and left behind a wife and small son. Andy was from Bella Coola.
On Dec. 29 the RCMP announced that Crown had approved a charge of first degree murder against 27-year-old Bryan Everett O'Reilly, charges of second degree murder
against 28-year-old Christian Cracian and 25-year-old Andrew Jongbloets, and charges of manslaughter using a firearm
against 33-year-old Lucille Mack and 22-year-old Stephen Mecham.
Since the charges were announced all six have made
court appear-ances with the most recent being Wednesday, Feb. 25, when Cracian, and O'Reilly, who both remain in custody,
appeared by video in BC Supreme Court in Williams Lake, while the lawyer representing Rhem appeared by phone.

Press Release
The Coastal Regional District Chairs Group recently met with the BC Ferry Commissioner, Mr. Gordon Macatee.
The Group expressed concern about the continuing lack of a vision state-ment by BC Ferries, and that coastal com-munities are now well beyond the tip-ping point: the total traffic for BC Ferries has dropped to 1991 levels. The significant increases in fares are making BC Ferries unaffordable. The last scheduled fare increase of 3.9% in Performance Term 3, will take effect on April 1, 2015.
As a regulator, the Commissioner is completely indepen-dent of the Provincial Government and BC Ferries. The difficulty for the Group is that as traffic continues to decline, so does revenue. Reductions in service further reduce the traffic, yet the Commissioner has to come up with ferry fare proposals to keep the Corporation
financially sustain-able. Under this mandate, the Commissioner has no option but to signal that ferry fares must go up.
The Commissioner is now preparing a preliminary Price Cap Position for Performance Term 4, an evaluation term within the 60-year Coastal Ferry Services Contract that begins April 2016. It is
expected that posi-tion will be released by the end of March 2015 to be followed by a six-month pause for public input.
The Group was formed in 2011 as a result of grow-ing concern about the economic and social impacts of BC Ferries system on coastal economies. This concern has not change and in fact has been strength-
ened in light of a report by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) which clearly demonstrates that the effects of the BC Ferry system are actually province-wide. The Coastal Chairs con-tinue to maintain the position that the BC Ferry system is a part of the province-wide
network of highways and transportation infrastructure.
The Group intends to meet with the Minister of
Transportation and Infrastructure in March 2015.
With a name like The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, you might think that the Vancouver-based duo is the result of a love story between Captain Ahab and Lizzie Borden. You’d be wrong. In real-ity, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers are armed with an arse-nal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percus-sion, and a road-worn Telecaster guitar. The duo kick out raw, primal blues, infused with a jolt of renewed energy.
Their memorable name is inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Bobby McGee’ that refer-ences the blues harp, (‘I took my harpoon
out of my dirty red bandana’) and ‘axe’, a common term for the guitar. Hall and Rogers have been influenced by the well-known, pro-lific songwriter and Grammy winner Willie Dixon, among others, but recently the band finds them-selves increasingly inspired not only by the electric ‘groove blues’ of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s but also by the music of their peers.
Their sound, how-ever, is distinctly their own--smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. The band has been nominated for multiple Maple Blues Awards, and won 'Blues Act of the Year' at the SiriusXM
Indies in 2013. They have also pounded their fair share of festival stages includ-ing SXSW 2013/14, Winnipeg Folk Fest, Ottawa Blues Fest, Calgary Folk Fest, and Montreal Jazz Fest. Along the way they’ve shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Booker T Jones, David Wilcox, Mother Mother, The Sheep Dogs, and Serena Ryder.
They’ve also had songs featured on television shows such as the 'The Good Wife’ and 'Blue Bloods'.
Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.

On February 28th the Bella Coola Rod and Gun Club hosted their annual Pot Luck Game Dinner and Fundraiser at Lobelco Hall.
It was a full house and members and guests that packed the hall enjoyed a fantastic dinner where one could sample wild game including cougar, elk, moose, white tail deer, mule deer and rainbow trout, plus some home grown turkey from Clarence Hall.
The dishes ranged from meatballs to roasts and there
were a host of sal-ads, spuds and some homemade buns (thanks Christina and Charlie!) to make sure no-one went hungry. Not to mention the dessert table where folks had a great variety to choose from.
The quality and variety of food on the tables was a testa-ment to the many fine cooks we have in our valley!
During the eve-ning there were door prizes, a silent auc-tion and an oppor-tunity to enter draws for the two main prizes of a .22 cali-bre long rifle or a 20 minute helicopter ride donated by West Coast Helicopters. Kindra Gurr was the very excited winner of the rifle and Leslie Harrison will be able to show off our local sites to five guests with her West Coast Helicopters gift cer-tificate.
Music for the eve-ning was provided by Tog-e, Bog-e (Take it Easy).
The ensemble featured a mix of Celtic and traditional songs with lively entries to get people on their feet and singing along. Mitch Moren was the win-ner of the Buck derby this year with his 156 6/8 inch Mule Deer and there were lots of hunting and outdoor adventure stories and photos shared during the course of the evening – includ-ing successful hunts for many ladies and junior hunters in the group.
A special tribute was given during the evening to Ed Nash who retired this year after serving as the treasurer for the club for close to 30 years. Due to Ed’s help
and firm grip on the purse strings the club is in great financial shape!
The club would like to thank our generous sponsors that contribute ser-vices or gear that bring in the funds to help maintain and improve our gun range and provide insurance coverage for our members.

Nuxalk Nation takes part in historic paddle to Qatuwas Festival in Bella BellaBy eVanGeline hanUse
On the morning of July 9, 2014, four canoes began their journey from Bella Coola to par-take in the annual Tribal Canoe Journeys. Hosted this year by the Heiltsuk Nation of Bella Bella, it is estimated that there will be 100 canoes attending the Qatuwas Festival and 5,000 visitors going to Bella Bella for seven days of celebrating, feast-ing, and dancing.Tribal Journeys, also referred
to as Qatuwas, or ‘People Gathering Together,’ is planning to return to Bella Bella this year, 21 years after its first gathering was held in 1993. The Heiltsuk have played a key role in the resurgence of the ocean going canoe culture along the Pacific North West Coast when they first carved a canoe and paddled from Bella Bella to Vancouver for Expo 86, in 1986 and in 1989 participated in the “Paddle to Seattle”, and at this event invited other tribes to travel to
Bella Bella and hosted the 1993 Qatuwas Festival.Members of the Squamish Nation and their fellow paddlers from Hawaii towed two canoes from Vancouver, BC and were welcomed into Bella Coola by the Nuxalk Nation with a pot-luck at the Bella Coola Motel Campground. Together, they journeyed for three days with the help of support vessels, arriving in Bella Bella last weekend. Luke Mack, a skipper, who has been on several canoe
journeys, was cautious when speaking of facing the notori-ous Mesachie Nose, famous for its swirling currents and strong winds. “If the winds pick up we may have to be towed,” said Mack. To many, this canoe journey is seen as a healing opportu-nity for all involved. Cultural traditions and knowledge are being revived as traditionally Nuxalkmc were skilled naviga-tors on the water, using the ocean as a highway for trade and
attending ceremonies all across the Coast, even traveling as far as the Hawaiian Islands.
