FISHINGCOASTAL BEND

Fishing in the Coastal Bend Bay area is excellent all year round. In the Coastal Bend, there are typically three kinds of fishing; Shallow Water, Deep Water and Fresh Water.

SHALLOW WATERAlong the bays, Laguna Madre

and the shores of Padre Island and Port Aransas is where you’ll catch speckled trout, redfish, whiting, drum and flounder.

DEEP WATERTypically, off the shores of Port

Aransas to Rockport are “where they bite everyday”. Whether you’re in a private or chartered boat, sport fishermen can try for amberjack, red snapper and tuna year round - if you’re searching for a big marlin and bill fish, you’re best bet is from May to September.

FRESH WATERLocated 40 miles northwest

of Corpus Christi in Mathis, at Lake Corpus Christi, there are 200 miles of shoreline with excellent fishing for bass, catfish and crappie.

FISHING LICENSESAND PRICES

In order to go fresh or salt water fishing, you must have a Texas fishing license. Annual fees for Out of State licenses range from $55-$65 - however one day licenses are only $15. For Texas residents, licenses range from $28-$38. Licenses can be picked up at any local Stripes store and local sporting goods stores.

130 YEARS OF CELEBRATION AT T H E TA R P O N I N N

There are more than a century’s worth of col-orful facts and stories about The Tarpon Inn. Here are just a few of them.

The Tarpon Inn was built in 1886 with surplus lumber from Civil War barracks. And it was first used to house workers for the Mansfield Jetty (the south jetty for Aransas Pass). After work was completed on the jetty, the building became a hotel-and it’s been one ever since.

The architecture of the Tarpon is pretty char-acteristic of tropical coastal structures. It was de-

signed and built for comfort in the sunny, humid climate of the Texas Coastal Bend.

When one walks into the Tarpon Inn’s lobby, it is inevitable not notice the hundreds of Tarpon Scales covering every inch of the walls. Tarpon scales are quite large-some are as much as 2 to 3 inches across. So they’re big enough to write on. In past decades, that’s exactly what a lot of the guests have done. They documented their catches-and “papered” a couple of the walls in the Tarpon’s main lobby with over 7,000 of

by Martha Castro

26 COASTAL BEND VISITORS GUIDE APRIL 2016

Page 27: Coastal Bend Visitors Guide - April 2016

them. Each scale bears the auto-graph and the hometown of the lucky angler, along with the size, weight, and date of the catch. To-day, those walls serve as a virtual history book (or at least a rather quirky guest register!) of those who’ve enjoyed the hospitality the Tarpon Inn-and the fishing around here.

Some famous signatures on the Tarpon Scales include U.S. Presi-den Franklin D. Roosevelt, Holly-wood Film Actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr, and Academy Award Winning Actor Victor McLaglen. Other famous signatures include Duncan Hines, Aimee Semple Mcpherson, Clyde Beatty, Bob Lil-ly, and Edward F. Teller.

The Tarpon Inn is undoubted-ly a hotel full of rich and amazing history. Since it’s opening the ho-tel has added two restaurants that have become local favorites. The two restaurants available are Roo-sevelt’s at The Tarpon Inn, great for fine dining, and The Tarpon Bar and Grill, a favorite lunch and dinner spot for locals and visitors alike.

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway or are visiting Port Aran-sas, make sure to visit the Tarpon Inn.

The Tarpon Inn is now celebrat-ing it’s 130 Years Anniversary since it opened it’s doors in 1886. This historical landmark radiates more than it’s history, it radiates unique-ness with the 24 unique available rooms.

Book your room, dine-in, and enjoy all the history the Tarpon Inn and Port Aransas have to offer.
