Bridgeton Blueberry Festival, picnic followed byMilky Way shoot at Claire and Dan’s farm, JonesCounty Heritage Festival, Wings over Bridgetonseaplanes, Atlantic Beach kite festival, andMorehead City to Beaufort Christmas flotilla. Inaddition we held a basic photography class anda still life photography workshop.

Our Competition Committee, chaired by SueWilliams, organized monthly mini-competitionsselecting a variety of unique and challengingcontest topics. The committee also ran ourSpring and Fall major print competitions.

We welcome new members on a regular basis. Many are inspired to join us after seeing ouroutstanding Newsletter and Website. I’m grate-ful for newsletter editor, Evie Chang Hendersonand webmaster Alan Welch for jobs well done.

During our monthly meetings we had presen-tations on preparing images for display or com-petition by Tom McCabe, macro photography bySue Williams, still life photography by JohnSteady, wildlife photography by Neil Jernigan, astrophotography by Dr. Karl Chiang, creatingphoto projects by Christine Richman, and theart of photoshop by Dennis Szeba. During ourJanuary and December social gatherings weheard from Tom Whalen on “You might be aphoto snob if…” and “Have you made this mis-take?”

There are many others who work behind thescenes to keep this club thriving. While toomany to mention, that doesn’t make me any lessgrateful for their help and dedication.

Fasten your seatbelt…2018 has begun..

Writer, William Arthur Ward, said,“Feeling gratitude and not expressingit is like wrapping a present and not

giving it.” As I look back on 2017, I am grateful forthe very successful year our club had and for themany people who contributed to that success.

Under the direction of our Special Events andCommunity Service committee, chaired by RickMyer, we continued our two permanent displays atCarolina Colours and Pamlico Heritage Center. Inaddition, we offered three other opportunities formembers to display and sell their photos; TurnageGallery in Washington, Bank of the Arts Galleryin New Bern, and New Bern-Craven County PublicLibrary.

Community service photo shoots included twohomecomings at MCAS Cherry Point, Howell Centerand Brookdale Assisted Living residents portraits,Howell Center Prom, Paint your Heart Out NewBern, Merci Clinic’s “Merci on Middle” fundraiser, photos of the New Bern Firemen’s Museum, Bike MSNew Bern, Mumfest Photo Booth, Veteran’s StandDown Havelock, and a Christmas party featuringGunny Claus being towed in on a harrier jet atCherry Point.

Our Skills Development Committee, chaired byKen Haigler in conjunction with our field trip com-mittee (Robbin Haigler, Chuck Colucci, & RickMeyer), provided a host of additional opportunitiesfor members to practice and improve their photog-raphy skills. Field trip and photo opportunities in-cluded Pungo Lake tundra swans and snow geese,Pamlico County rural decay (2 trips), Carrot Islandwild ponies, Tryon Palace gardens, Fort Macon andsurrounding naturetrails, Museum of Lifeand Science, Sarah PDuke Gardens, antiqueboat show, black bear atAlligator River NationalWildlife Refuge,

Report & Photos by Michael Cheves with: Robert Hendrix Susan Riggs William Ryan MaryAnn Ryan Ed Ryan by the time we arrived close to 4 pM, parking was already limited. We ended up in thepublic parking lot at the corner of evans & 4th.the skies were cloudy and there was a slight chillin the air, but the weather was calm and dry.there were large crowds at the waterfront allalong evans Street. Scoping out a vantage point,Susan took the lead and secured our access to theupper deck of the recently docked carolinaprincess. the princess promised a fantastic viewof the show, but my feet told me they wanted toroam. robert and I ended up heading further westdown evans St. I made it all the way to jayceepark amidst a very large crowd of spectators. Here, an empty spot on a park bench offered a generous vantage point for my 85mmlens. after a few minutes of shooting from there, Idecided to free up that space for someone elseand head down to the floating docks for somemore fun. the floating docks gave me a nice eyelevel view of the flotilla. i stuck to my 85mmnikkor lens, but also got a few wide shots withmy 14mm Rokinon. i shot at or near thewidest aperture for each lens, with iSO any-where between 1600-6400. I always use thelowest ISo I can get away with, but I'm not afraidto push it high if the situation calls for it. My fa-vorite part of shooting the flotilla was the contrastbetween the colorful lights on the boats and thepitch black background. the bright lights createdbeautiful reflections off the water's surface. afterthe flotilla came the lighting of the christmas tree.robert and I both got to take some shots of thetree, and then we hiked back towards the parkinglot to meet up with the rest of the group. We de-cided on Dank Burrito for dinner and enjoyed avery nice meal together before heading out on ourseparate ways. n

For the last few years I have been using Tamron Super Zoom lens as my primary and in many casesonly lens. My present lens is a Tamron 16 to 300 mm, with a minimum F stop of 3.5 to 6.3 dependingon how far out you run it. This lens is obviously not perfect. The minimum F stops require a lot of lightand it has a tendency to bow some of the straight edges along the sides of the image when at full wideangle. The point of this article is to show how good it can do on the telephoto end of the job. My wife and I spent a day at the State Fair a couple of months ago. I was cleaning up the picturesfrom the trip and I was really impressed with how sharp one of them was. The first picture I am includ-ing is a wide angle shot of a ferris wheel with my wife standing in front of it. I want you to note the longarmed carnival ride to the left of the ferris wheel.

Obviously one size does not fit allbut I have found this type of lens to bean excellent compromise for me. I canshoot a large group close in and getgood quality on long range shots with-out having to carry around a lot of lensand swap them out in the field. Thisparticular lens presently sells foraround $500.

How Good is a Super Zoom?

Photo #1 - 16mm, f22, 1/250sec, ISO400

Photo #3 - Cropped version of Photo #2

Picture #2 was taken from the same spot with the lens at 300mm.

I was really surprised at how sharp photo #2 looked!

To check the sharpness, I zoomedin on the picture and made the cropwhich is photo #3. The crop shows thelady to be a bit soft but I was amazed atthe sharpness of the picture at thatrange especially shooting hand-held.The vibration control was on and thesewere perfect conditions with the subject sitting still.
