Welcome to CCCR of PCA 2015. See all of those smiling faces on our members of the Board? Those are happy, eager, and cooperative people doing their best to continue to make the CCCR the best region in Zone 8. When you see one of them, give them a pat on the back, smile, and say “Thank You.” This is going to be a great year!

I’m currently doing double duty as your President and newsletter editor. For that reason, Coastalaire will be published quarterly, until we find someone to take over the editorship. Much thanks to Bob “Kit” Kitamura for designing a wonderful for-mat and helping me get this issue composed and published. We will continue to keep you posted about coming events via emails, our website, and Facebook.

Be sure to checkout the activities calendar as posted on page 6, and read Chuck Stevenson’s overview of this year’s coming events. This is going to be a great year of activities for everyone. And as we continue to plan, we may surprise you with some even more special outings.

You might notice our updated CCCR logo. The new logo retains the overall identity of the origi-nal but has been simplified with a more accurate map of California and our region. And this logo is much better suited for embroidery work, as you will see with our new offerings of club shirts and jackets. Coming soon.

Board MeetingsCCCR members are welcome to attend the Board Meetings. Time may be made available for non-board members to have input during these meetings. Due to limited time and space, please call Chuck Jennings prior to the meeting you wish to attend. 459-7416

This year’s California Central Coast Region Porsche Club of America has a fantastic list of events for most every interest you may have. Looking for leisurely events? We all love driv-ing our Porsches to fun places, connecting with friends and making new ones in the club. Check the calendar for many opportunities. To highlight a few, on March 28th, plan on going on a “gim-mick rally” that covers about 75 miles starting in San Luis Obispo and ending at Firestone Winery in northerly Los Olivos for lunch and a wine tasting. You’ll see some beautiful back country on paved roads while trying to answer some semi-challeng-ing questions along the way. We also have a Wonderful Weekend Getaway planned for April 10-12 in Southern California at the California (Porsche) Festival of Speed and staying at the famous historic Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside! We have a reduced room rate of $139 a night based on continued availabil-ity. So far, 30 people from our Club are going! We hope many more decide to join in the fun! If you haven’t heard about this already, please see the Club’s website for details and hotel reservation contact information.

On May 16th, a trip has been planned to the his-toric Piedras Blancas Lighthouse where lucky attendees will get a private tour of the historic lighthouse. Lunch is planned at the Ragged Point Inn. This event is limited to 30 people so sign up early. Contact: Jim Major at (805) 927-5524.

Of course, in mid-August is the famous Monterey Historic Car Week with many venues centered on the Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This year, plan on going to the second annual “Werks” Porsche Car Show/Concours held at the Rancho Canada Golf Course in the Carmel Valley.

The famous Porsche Rennsport Reunion 5 is being held this year at the Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway from September 25-27. This hugely popular event will draw thousands of Porsche fans and this is one event you won’t want to miss! Check out the Laguna Seca website for more information and tickets. Need more? We have monthly breakfast outings at local restaurants. Last month we had over 54 mem-bers turn out at our breakfast at Scotty’s in Pismo Beach! Check the calendar for upcoming dates and locations.

Like driving events? If you haven’t tried autocross you’re encouraged to sign up for one or more events scheduled this year. Autocross has become so popular with our club members that we increased the number of events this year to SIX! Autocross events are held on an abandoned WW II runway at the Santa Maria Airport converted to an autocross tract that Porsche North America repaved to promote new Porsche models a few years ago. For a bit more speed and challenge, sign up for one or both of the two Driver’s Ed days at Buttonwillow Raceway this May and again in November. This is a fantastic opportunity to drive your car on a racecourse at a pace you’re comfortable driving at with a trained and certified instructor riding right along with you in your car! Sign up for Auto-cross and Driver’s Ed events through www.motors-portreg.com

Lastly, this year we are making plans for and look-ing forward to our gala end of the year Holiday Party. The date will be in early December and more infor-mation and special pricing will be provided later in the year. We hope to see a great turnout for this very special evening event. Although we have a pretty full calendar for this year, the Board of Directors is always interested in hear-ing from you about an idea for an event especially if you are willing to help coordinate the event! Please contact any of the Board members if you have a sug-gestion for an event.

A Few Refections From Our Board of Directors

Andrew Winterbottom Vice-President

The Porsche Club of America is about the people. We should always remember build on that. We en-courage membership feedback on everything we do, and we try to act on that feedback and constructive criticism. This year we enjoyed a steadily growing membership. I think our Board of Directors func-tioned at a 90+% level, and we have again a strong slate of directors elected for 2015 with ever improv-ing leadership from its members. We already have planned a great calendar of activ-ites for every month of 2015. Our fiscal condition is strong, and we have inncreasing support from the Walt Branscom and the rest of the good folks at Porsche Santa Barbara. This year we will see exciting new Porsche products with the Macan, the GT3RS, the Boxter and Cayman GTS, and the Tur-bo 4-cylinder Boxster and Cayman on the horizon.

Unforutnately, we have no dedicated editor for the Coastalaire for 2015, and with a limited publcia-tion we may lose some advertising revenue as well as some loss of membership awareness. Like many other PCA clubs, our general membership partici-pation is low compared to the overal size of our memberships. We generally see the usual dedicated participants at our activities plus a few new attend-ees. We would like to see more of our members par-ticipate and volunteer to help us plan and organize our activities. We need to create more opportunity for improvement to “excite” more members into participation.

2014 in Review from members of your Board of Directors

2014 was a great year for the California Central Coast Region. We thought you might like to hear some reflective thoughts on 2014 and into 2015 from your Directors.

I am pleased to report to you that the health of our membership is good! With everyone’s help in signing up new Porsche owners to our club, we have managed to increase our numbers to a substantial count.

In January of 2013, our numbership was: Primary members: 271Affiliate members: 213Total members: 484

As of this February 1:

Primary members: 328Affiliate members: 221Total members: 549

As you can see, we are one member away from 550 total members. I expect by the time you read this, we will have accomplished that num-ber. I will continue to serve the membership to the best of my ability & with your assistance, I intend to strive to reach to a total membership of 600 members 2015!

A Few Reflections From Our Board of Directors

We began the 2014 calendar year with $8,111 in our bank account and ended the year with a balance of $15,760.

I developed a budget for 2014 so we could bet-ter track our actual revenues and expenditures during the year. I also created some graphs to show a pictorial display of our revenues and expenditures for the year.

The main sources of revenue for 2014 were:

PCA dues $7,000 Advertising 4,800 Driving events 6,400 SB Porsche 4,000

The main expenditures for 2014 were:

Coastalaire $8,500Charitable donations 2,000Operating expenses 4,000

The CCCR Board elected to print the Coasta-laire every other month during the second half of 2014 to save money and we also received special dues adjustments from PCA National of $2,300. Santa Barbara Auto Group has also provided financial support to our Region.

Our Region is starting the 2015 calendar year in excellent financial shape and we are continuing to refine our budgeting process to better track our revenues and expenditures in the future. See page 19 for a detailed report on 2014 net income.

Ken FinneyTreasuer

I am the safety officer for the CCCER. This is my second year serving on the board, I will serve again next year. I am having a pleasant experience working with the other members of this board. Everyone seems to contribute ex-tensively, there is no internal strife or friction that hinders our cooperation. There are some very experienced and talented members in this group, people from all walks of life, but all with one goal; the enjoyment and perpetuation of the Porsche mark. Next year, there will be slight changes on the board, and promises to be even more exciting.

I and others present a charity event for the kids at Camp Hapitok, the Gathering of Friends car show held every July at Laguna Lake, San Luis Obispo. This event initiated by members Ed Swain and Hamp Miller, has endured for over eleven years. We have events designed to involve all members’ interests, from Auto crossing, racing, touring and luncheon events.A major challenge for next year is finding an editor for the monthly magazine. If anyone has the talent and desire to endure this task, would be immensely appreciated!

Thanks for supporting the CCCR,

But we are not done yet! We also have two Driver Education days at Buttonwillow Raceway in 2015. If you’ve always wanted to get your car out on an actual race track, this is your chance! Look for more information in the near future for these events. Here are the dates:

Friday, May 15—Driver Education—Buttonwillow RacewayFriday, November 13—Driver Education—Button-willow Raceway

Jon Milledge is our Region’s Chief Driving Instruc-tor, and is in charge of the Driver Education events this year. Tom Dobyns is in charge of the Academy and Autocross events.

We hope you seriously consider coming out for one…or all of these incredible events! It’s a nice way to meet oth-ers in our Porsche Club. Oh! And it is great fun as well. One event, and you’ll be hooked! See you out there!

The Driver’s Corner a.k.a The Late Apex

Welcome to 2015!

At this writing, we are already into our second month. We’ve completed our first Autocross event of the year, and are looking forward to our Second Annual Autocross Academy on Saturday, March 14. Students who attended our first Academy had noth-ing but praise for the day.

For those of you who have always wanted to get your car out and “exercise” it in a safe, fun environ-ment, we invite you to sign up for this event. You can go onto MotorSportReg.com to enter. Schools like this usually cost a few hundred dollars, but for our members, the cost is only $50 for the entire day! You’ll have an instructor that will be with you throughout the Academy, providing driving tips and encouragement. What a deal!

In 2014 your club put on three Autocross events. In 2015 we will hold double that number…SIX EVENTS! They are becoming more popular, as more of our members discover the joy of getting their Porsche’s out and discovering just what an incredible car they own! As beautiful as they are, our cars were engineered to be driven!

Here are the remaining Autocross Dates for 2015. All of our events are held at the Santa Maria Public Airport.

2014 Annual Holiday Party

Our CCCR Annual Holiday Party was held on December 7th at the San Luis Obispo Country Club, and it was a festive evening filled with holi-day music, food and cheer. This is my personal favorite event fo the year, and I look forward to seeing everyone come together at this special time.As guests arrived, they approached a gifttable filled

with holidays raffle gifts ranging from beautiful Wine Baskets (see Margo Zinc, below) from Walt Branscome of Porsche Santa Barbara, SGS goodie bags from Guy Ober of SGS Motorsports, free oil changes from Broad Street Automotive, concourse-

ready waterless car detail by Bryan Dobyns of Peerless Automobile Detailing, family protrait by Chuck Jennings, Cutruzzola Wineyards wine, Porsche wine glasses, books, T-shirts, posters from Bob Kitamura, facials and massasges from Adara Med Spa by Dr. Michael Limberg, and many other prizes that were enjoyed by all.

The evening began with a delicious dinner accom-panied by wine and Holiday piano music by Bill Mortimer. During the evening, President Chuck Jennings welcomed new Board members for 2015 and gave us a recap of 2014. Activities director Chuck Stevenson discussed our monthly events and Tom Brown, our Zone 8 Representative, reported on Zone 8 news for our region.

Susan Foreman-Lewis (above, left) and Betty Jen-nings (below) helped me deliver raffle prizes to many lucky winners and the evening was a huge success!

Mark your calendars for another great Holiday party on Sunday, December 6th, 2015 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club!

The Tale of One Key

Did you know that your 21st Century Porsche is one of the most theft-proof vehicles on the road? It is. Here’s how I know.

On November 22, Andy Winterbottom and I attend-ed the Fourth Annual Tech Tactics West Day held atthe Porsche Cars North America Training facility inOntario. (If you have the opportunity to attend a Tech Tactics event in the future, I highly recom-mend it.) That evening, we stayed at the Hyatt Place near the intersection of the I-10 and I-15 in Ontario. The next morning we were to arrive at 8:30 at the Hilton Garden Inn, just two blocks north, for a PCA Zone 8’s Regions Presidents meeting.

It was a beautiful clear Sunday morning, but SantaAna winds were gusting up to 50 mph redistributing Inland Empire topsoil to all points west. It was aprecarious walk from the protection of the hotel tomy car in the adjacent parking lot. Andy and I wereintent on quickly getting our personal items stored in the trunk and ourselves into the quiet and com-fortable passenger compartment of my 2001 911 Turbo. As we approached my car, I pressed the door release button on my keyless remote. When I didn’t hear that familiar clunk of the door locks releas-ing, I attributed it to the wind’s overriding commo-tion. When I released the trunk lid, Andy, on the passenger side, secured the lid above my head as I positioned luggage and other items into the trunk. Satisfied that all was in place, I reached up, grabbed the lid and closed it with the usual two-handed pres-sure until it locked.

At this point, noticing that my key was not in my hand, I began searching my pockets – all of them. No key! I looked on the ground beneath my feet. No key! I went through all my pockets, again. Still no key! Looked again on the ground all around the car. Nothing! I remember thinking, “I must have dropped my key into the trunk. No problem. I’ll just release the trunk lid from inside the driver’s side door, open the trunk, find my key, get out of this very annoying wind, and off we go.”

You guessed it! The doors were still locked. I won’t repeat here what I said at that revelation. And I won’t repeat what I said at the instant I remembered that I had no extra key.

I bought this car about four months prior with only one key. I had been intending to order a second key, but hadn’t gotten to it. Hence, I pass along the rest of this frustrating story with the hope that I might save you from repeating it.

Once resolved that I was not going to get into my car and no one was going make a new key for me on a Sunday morning, I called 1-800-400-4222.

The AAA man arrived about a half hour later, walked around my car twice, peeked into the driver’s side and passenger’s side windows twice, checked the integrity of the doors’ windows, and announced that he would have to break a window to get in. And then he said, “You know, Porsches are the most theft-proof cars on the road.” (Now you know.) It was with some surprising hesitation that I declined the broken window, and decided to wait until I could have a key made the next day . . . and just maybe, some of those bright Porsche folks waiting for us at the Hilton Garden Inn just might know something we didn’t know about violating the security of a 996.

Perhaps out of pity, the AAA guy graciously gave Andy and me a ride to the PCA Zone 8 meeting two blocks away. Andy had his luggage. I had my cell phone, my wallet, and a comb.

Our fashionably late arrival at the Zone 8 meeting added little solace to a windy, dusty, and down right lousy morning. But having heard my sad story, one of our fellow Porsche enthusiasts, Sam Avedon, and a couple of other savy guys volunteered a rather obscure solution.

(Here’s where you may someday owe me a $20 tip.)

The Tale of One Key

The folks at Porsche AG, in their infinite wisdom, imagined that some of their less evolved owners just might be silly enough to lock their only key in the trunk of their Boxster or 911. To address this potential debacle, our compassionate German engineers installed a manual emergency release cable, remotely located behind the headlamp inside the passenger-side fender. (Remember, you can find anything on the internet. You can even find pictures posted by silly fellows just like me.) A former body man, Sam volunteered to help remove the wheel well panels and pull the release cable. “Ah! We’ll be headed back to SLO before nightfall.”

The Zone 8 meeting adjourned around 3:00 P.M., and Andy and I were soon on our optimistic way to the Turbo in Sam’s BMW with a trunk full of his re-demptive tools, less the one tool we needed. While Andy and Sam ran off to Home Depot for the cor-rect tool, I sat on the curb next to my car and texted my wife. “I hope to be home by midnight.” Two hours later, with the right and left wheel well panels removed, no magic release cable had been found. It was now after sunset.

About that time, a well-appointed rescue truck mysteriously appeared in the parking lot, its driver responding to another disabled vehicle call. Andy approached this fellow for any possible help, in-cluding a way to remove my wheels for better access to that yet undiscovered release cable. The generous fellow offered his inflatable wedge to allow us access to the interior door release, but he warned me that too much pressure might break the window glass. By this time, I was ready to drive the 250 miles to my home without a side window.

Five minutes later, we had the driver’s side door open with the window in one piece accompanied by our loud cheers and an even louder car alarm. The celebration was short lived. With the Turbo alerting everyone within two blocks that we were trying to violate it, we found that it had shut ev-erything down, interior trunk release included. We were in, but we were hapless. The only consolation was that we now had access to my owner’s manual and a very nifty little instruction flyer tucked inside the cover of the fuse panel that explained (with pic-tures) what to do if you had the unfortunate failure of your battery and no other way into the trunk to attend to it. All we needed was another car battery, jumper cables with the positive lead to the trunk lid’s breaker, and the ground to any unpainted metal inside the door frame, and click-clunk, the trunk lid would yield its hidden treasures!

Now remember, your 21st Century Porsche is among the most theft-proof cars of the modern age, and that includes my 2001 911 Turbo. With a healthy battery, it’s very cynical about any attempt to harass its security. Once threatened, it shuts down every avenue of access to its private parts. Although we were permitted the pleasure of listen-ing to the radio and reading the owner’s manual, we were denied access to the trunk and engine compartment, and unable to relock the doors.

This concluded our attempts to retrieve my key. Andy had to be home the next morning to take his wife to an important medical appointment. Our only reasonable way home was by rental car. The hotel folks were nice enough to give us a ride to the Ontario airport to rent a car. The Turbo sat with its doors unlocked in the hotel parking lot. Of course, no one could steal it. Not even us.

We arrived at Andy’s house at near midnight. Myhouse key was locked in the trunk of the Turbo, so I had to wake my wife and my two dogs to get into my own house. continued on page 18

18The Coastalaire January-February-March 2015

The next day, I called Walter’s Porsche in River-side, 17 miles from my Turbo, to alert them to my car’s unceremonial arrival. Once again, I attempted to use my AAA Plus towing service, but alas, the tow truck driver called to ask where he might find the key. Without one, he was unable to move my car onto his flatbed. But he offered the telephone number of a more adept tow company that had the wherewithal at my extra expense.

The Turbo arrived at Walter’s Porsche late Mon-day afternoon. The service manager assured me that they would get into my car, retrieve my key sometime Tuesday morning, and give me a jingle to report their success. By this time, my ego was so di-minished, I had little pride remaining and gave full permission to look through all my personal belong-ings to find the key.

At noon on Tuesday, I received the jingle. My Turbo had smugly forgiven my attempted thievery and awaited our renewed relationship. The service department would be open until 7:00 P.M. Overly eager and clueless, I told the service manager that I was soon on my way and to expect me well before closing time.

I departed my home at 12:45 expecrting to arrive at the dealership in less than five hours. I covered the first 200 miles in 3 hours. Encouraged by my prog-ress, my plan was to exit I-5 and take the I-210 east to the I-15 south to Riverside. I merged from the I-5 onto the 210 at approximately 4:45. Having never shifted higher than second gear, I merged onto the 15 just past 7:00. My right leg was cramping and my patience was last seen throwing a stomping fit somewhere around San Dimas. Once resolved that I had failed my ETA, I forlornly opted for the com-fort of familiar surroundings. I booked myselfinto the Hilton Garden Inn in Ontario. Having not planned for an overnight, I had no change of clothes, no toothbrush, no blood pressure medica-tion, and a nearly dead “smart” phone with the charger locked securely in my Turbo in Riverside.

The next morning I had just enough power on mysmart phone to operate the GPS, and fortunately managed to find my way to Walter’s Porsche. While the service department made and coded an extra key, and with my “Droid” charging at the servicemanagers desk, the shuttle driver led me in my rental car to the return depot at the Ontario airport. The shuttle driver was a well-seasoned local who understood just how to navigate around the chaos of the freeways. It was a good start of the day.

This was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the most traveled day of the year. It was imperative that I make as much progress as possible before those Los-Angeles-Basin folks headed over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house. I departed Walter’s Porsche at approximately noon, an extra key tucked in my pocket right next to my freshly charged phone.

The 15 moved well to the 210. I was feeling opti-mistic.The 210 moved well for the first 10 miles. I was feeling more optimistic. As I passed through San Dimas, I thought I might find my patience where I had left it the night before, perhaps hitch hiking somewhere along the side of the 210. And then, I saw those big LED letters against a black background on a giant freeway information mar-quee:

TIME TO PASADENA . . . . 45 MINUTES

This story is already much too long. So, here’s the short version to the end of this fiasco.

It took me almost exactly seven hours to drive from Riverside to San Luis Obispo with one stop for fuel and a bag of Cheetos. The cost of an extra key? $365. The cost for not having an extra key between Sunday morning and Wednesday evening? $800 plus approximately 60 hours of my life.

The moral of this story is? I’m sure you figured that out around the fourth or fifth paragraph. M

A Not to Be Trifled WithGimmick Rally

Saturday, March 28, 2015Join CCCR for a fun Saturday morning excursion into the hinterlands of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County. Rally Masters Chuck Stevenson and Art Trinidade have put together a low-key 75 mile tour on paved roads and parking where you can exercise your powers of observation and deduc-tive reasoning to answer questions posed along the way. In order to stretch a bit and accommodate a bio-brake, stops are planned along the route to seek out trivia and check out a winery. Our final destina-tion is Firestone Winery (northeast of Los Olivos). There, we will gather at a private lawn/picnic area where we will have a wine tasting and an optional winery tour. Lunch (sandwiches) will be available from the famous Panino’s Cafe in Los Olivos at a nominal cost or you can pack your own picnic.

The GimmickRally starts at the upper parking lot at the SLO Nazarene Church (Johnson Avenue and Southwood Street, SLO) with the first car leav-ing at 9:15 a.m. Cars will be let out at one minute intervals to avoid bunching up. Registration will be open at 8:30 a.m. Please email Chuck Stevenson at [email protected] to reserve an early car number. This will also help us let Firestone Winery know how many are coming and order the trophies. Last minute entries are welcome! Also, non-mem-bers and guests are welcome as navigators. Two adults per car please. Cost is $15 per person. This includes wine tasting at Firestone Winery. Price for lunch is $15 per person.
