To meet the grant requirement activities of approximately $4.5 million in grants, the Garden Grove Campus hosts a wide variety of activities such as Pathway Days, CyberPatriot competitions, workshops, trainings, articulation events, and community outreach activities such as tax preparation and regional meetings. In addition to these activities, the campus supports the activities of the Transfer Center, Counseling, and the Intercultural Resource Center. NEWPORT BEACH CAMPUS

The Newport Beach Campus focuses on Science, Arts, and Mathematics (SAM) and the Special Programs Center. The campus has increased site-based offerings which has led to an increase in enrollment and sections in STEM. Future plans are to continue to build momentum in the natural and physical sciences by adding courses and programs for students with majors in other science areas (e.g., geosciences) and engineering. In addition to the plans for expansion, the chairs and dean are seeking to add more technical courses in the areas of arts, music, and, potentially, biotechnology. NBC has also identified tutoring space within the Student Success Center, added furnishings for outdoor areas and second floor atrium, is currently identifying quiet study areas, and is implementing a card system in the SSC to allow pay-to-print for students. It is also the location of the locally recognized Coastline Art Gallery. The Art Gallery is open to the public and showcases the works of student artists, community artists, and well-known international artists.

WESTMINSTER LE-JAO CAMPUS

The Westminster Le-Jao Campus prides itself in promoting a learning environment that respects and meets the individual needs of its diverse student population. In order to support the success of diverse student populations and diverse learning styles, redesigning classroom space is a priority. Two of the general-use classrooms had been converted into hybrid use rooms that are used as computer labs and/or general use classrooms. The campus identified two more classrooms for upgrade to allow for the multi-use of classroom/lab spaces and completed construction for the new Student Success Center. A collaborative work space was also included in the design of the Student Resource Center. Social Responsibility Luncheon Giving Tuesday

through their social responsibility initiatives and programs are not only benefcial, but fundamentally crucial to facilitate the sustainable development and future of our Coastline student community. A Very Special Thanks to our event sponsors, guests and speakers for an insightful program.

Giving Tuesday #GivingTuesday is a global philanthropic movement intended to bring individuals and charities together to give back to those in need during the holiday season. On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, Coastline College participated it’s third #GivingTuesday social media campaign, where alumni, employees and community members contributed to support students in need. #GivingTuesday offcially kicked off year-end giving, resulting in $29,000 in gifts to programs, such as Coastline Promise, Coastline College Art Gallery, Special Programs for Disabled Students, EOPS, Scholarships, and more.

Support of Coastline Promise In October 2016, the Foundation Board of Directors committed to support Coastline’s Promise program by matching $100,000 per year (for three years) to provide free textbooks and tuition

to students who graduate from its partnering high school districts (such as Huntington Beach Unifed, Newport-Mesa Unifed and Garden Grove Unifed School Districts). During the 2018-2019 academic year, the second cohort of Coastline Promise students completed their frst year as freshmen. The Foundation Board of Directors is proud to support Coastline College in its efforts to offer affordable education to its local high school graduates.

Foster Youth/Guardian Scholars Coastline Foundation is grateful for U.S. Bank Foundation’s support of Coastline’s NextUp and Guardian Scholars programs. U.S. Bank contributed more $12,500 to assist Coastline students who are former foster youth by providing additional resources and support to help mitigate fnancial obstacles and emergencies they encountered while enrolled in college. By having access to such resources, foster youth students have higher success rates by staying enrolled, completing their education, and achieving their academic and personal goals.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT FRED FELDON

Fred Feldon, Coastline Professor of Mathematics Fred has been teaching at Coastline since 1995. At the time, he was the only full-time math instructor. He championed new classes, new methods of teaching and modes of delivery, inc luding the department ’s first online course in 1999. The department soon began rapidly growing. There are now five full-time math instructors. The department has become one of the college’s top-producing programs in FTES generated. And nontraditional students in the district are attracted in large numbers to Coastline’s online course offerings. Under Fred’s leadership, the math department has become a prominent leader in distance education.

The latest challenge to higher education has been the new State law AB 705. It mandates that students can no longer be required to enroll in remedial

math, English, or ESL classes. Beginning in Fall 2019 the vast majority of students must be placed into transfer, college-level courses with support, if needed, for underprepared students. Fred has been attending, and speaking at, a variety of state-wide conferences dealing with supporting the acceleration and placement of students. Along with his Co-Chair of the Department, Dr. Lisa Lee, he has been busy developing new support courses, collegiate courses, and new methods of placement to be compliant with AB 705.

Says Fred, “I do believe in the new state guidelines. But this must be the most disruptive, the most challenging, and at the same time, the most exciting moment I have ever experienced in my 25 years of higher education!”

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT DEBORAH HENRY

Deborah Henry, Coastline Professor of Anatomy and Physiology Deborah (Debbie) C. Henry, M.D. chairs the Biological Sciences and Allied Health Department at Coastline College. Debbie (or Dr. Henry) spent 26 years practicing neurological surgery, that is operating on the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves in various locations from Texas to California to Washington state.

In 2012, she became full-time faculty at Coastline teaching mostly Human Anatomy and Human Physiology.

According to Dr. Henry, Coastline’s Biological Science and Allied Health Department has grown significantly over the past four years that she has been chair. The department recently changed its name from Life Sciences to Biological Sciences and Allied Health to better illustrate the students that we are serving. The department has hired three new faculty members. They (we) have added many courses including introductory anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, online pharmacology, and bioethics to complement the needs of our students. We have work-study programs in physical therapy and pharmacy, and research opportunities in 3-D prosthetics and Newport’s Back Bay. In the spring, the department hosts a Health Science Academic Triathlon where students compete in a Jeopardy! fashion in the categories of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and chemistry. Over 50 students compete in this annually.

When not working, Dr. Henry enjoys spending time with her son, a senior at Newport Harbor High School, reading, walking, traveling (one continent to go-Antarctica) and taking care of two cats.
