    community to support a vibrant quality o lie in Leon County, to enrich and improve the liveso citizens and visitors alike. COCA is committed to promoting arts and culture in all its orms,

    The 621 GalleryThe Artist Series promotes and encourages classical music in the capital city by presenting a serieso world-renowned classical music perormances, providing an Artist-in-Residence series o recitals

    that educate students on the relevance o classical music, and sponsoring the Big Bend CommunityOrchestra, an organization that provides orchestral perormance opportunities to local musicians.

    Charles E. Hook Sculpture Garden

    Grades K-12

    Type o Program: Perormance Field Trip Opportunity Residency Workshop

    Area(s) o emphasis: Visual Art

    Cost o program: No cost

    Availability: Monday-Friday, except holidays, 9am-4 pm, but we will arrange tours orprivate organizations outside regular hours upon request.

    Program Description: The 621 Gallery oers guided tours o the Charles E. Hook Sculpture Garden

    as well as the indoor galleries. Join us or an event flled day learning aboutsculpting through the eyes o 16 regional sculptors who create larger than

    lie art by using various methods and materials. The program includes aguided tour o the Sculpture Garden located throughout Railroad Square ArtPark with discussions emphasizing the techniques o welding, elements o

    art, and key art terms.

    Pre-/Post-visit materials: Lesson plans are available and are intended to be used throughout theschool year to enhance students awareness o art in all subject areas.

    Teachers are mailed a copy o our curriculum kit designed or all grade

    levels. Within each kit teachers will receive an appropriate grade levelcurriculum along with instructional accommodations or students with

    learning disabilities, study guide, pre-/post-test, activity sheets, artistprofles, map, photos and descriptions o sculptures, and pre-/post-surveys

    o sculpture garden tour.

    Requirements: Teachers must provide inormation about any special needs or theirstudents or special activities.

    Program Description: The Parker Quartet will perorm a mini-recital, demonstrate their instruments

    Program Description: Paper-Making starts with a fber pulp plus natural materials such as grasses,seeds, petals or eathers. The program covers making pulp, screening

    sheets o paper and embellishing with color and textures into a groupcollage. Finished collages can be displayed as a group piece or cut into

    individual bookmarks. Optional workshop provides screens and pulp oreach individual to make his own paper collage, photo mats or stationery.

    Language and complexity o project or demo varies with age group.

    Program Description: Beginning with comments on abric uses with the clothing students wear, ormaterials ound at home, this program covers unctional vs. non-unctional

    weaving and demonstrates the entire process rom spinning a fber (rawwool) to dyeing, to weaving. Students receive hands-on experience o wools,

    yarns, fnished items, and may possibly try a little weaving. This programis related to airy tales, social studies, measuring and ormulas, history, and

    Program Description: Students are led through a series o processes in order to construct a panute and to learn the rudimentary skills needed to play tones on their

    instruments. Students practice listening skills and critical thinking skills

    while working in a group to create their own musical instrument. Thisworkshop is wrapped around exercising the skills o patience, listeningand paying attention to your work.

    Program Description: Musical demonstration in which students are exposed to the relationship

    between songs and stories. Students are exposed to and experience real

    world musical examples o the terms beginning, middle, end, high, low,ast, and slow. This program combines music, literature, and drawing,

    Florida Public Service CommissionThe Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC), a state agency, sets the rates utility companies chargeor natural gas, water, wastewater, and electricity. FPSC also oversees telephone service in Florida. The

    FPSC partners with schools in an ongoing educational eort to promote energy awareness duringthe U.S. Department o Energys National Energy Awareness Program (annually in October) and to

    promote water conservation during the American Water Works Associations National Drinking WaterWeek (annually in May).

    Program Description: Floridas ancient history is storied in ossils. This program begins withFlorida 14 million years ago and ends with Floridas Ice Age. It includescollecting ossils, models, hands-on activities and video clips.

    Requirements: Tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

    Program Description: Three 30 - 45 minute performances by ensembles representing the instrument

    families in an orchestra are presented throughout the year. Student membersof the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra present these programs and providerole models of students pursing their music interest and exhibiting determination,dedicated practice, teamwork, and passion. A question and answer period allowsstudents to customize their experience and to get to know the musicians better.

    Requirements: Spacious room such as an auditorium or large music room.

    Cost of Program: $8 per student, 1 adult chaperone free for every 10 students

    Availability: TBA (usually a Friday morning in April).

    Program Description: The 2009 young peoples concert will feature Carnival of the Animals by SaintSaens and other delightful music representing animals including AndersonsWaltzing Cat, Gershwins Walking the Dog, Rimsky-Korsakovs Flight of theBumblebee and Tschaikovskys Galloping Horse (William Tell Overture Finale).

    The Tallahassee Writers Association, Inc.A dynamic organization o both published and aspiring writers o all ages in all genres. TWA sponsorsthe Seven Hills Writing Conerence annually, a Big Bend authors celebration, and mini-workshops.

    TWA also sponsors nationally recognized writers contests: The Seven Hills Contest (fction, non-fction, memoirs, essay), Penumbra (poetry, haiku) and Celtic Knots, Project Stagelight and ProjectAutumnlight (stage plays). TWA also sponsors the high school Big Bend Writers Guild (BBWG).
