Code Check is a field inspection guide to important code requirements and common code violations in the construction of singlefamily and two-family dwellings. The primary reference document for this book is the 2006 edition of the International Residential Code'" for One- and Two-Family Dwellings, published by the International Code Council.

Codes are adopted at different times in different places around the country. New editions come out every three years, and some states make extensive modifications to the model codes prior to adoption. Because the actual code that is used in a particular area could vary, we include references to the two most commonly used codes for every item in the book. Significant code changes have been noted and are included in a summary on the inside back cover. This feature enables the book to be used in areas still using the previous code edition. To determine the particular codes in effect in your area, contact your local building department before beginning your project.

For more information on the building, electrical & mechanical codes, valuable resources, & why Benjamin Franklin is featured in the Code Check series, visit: www.codecheck.com

The code changes referenced on the inside back cover compare the codes in this table to the 2003 IRe, UPC, UMC & 2002 NEC

CSST Manifold

CSST is regulated by American National Standards Institute ANSI / lAS LC 1-1997/CSA 6.26-M97 Fuel Gas Piping Systems Using Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST). The standard requires that a contractor be certified before installing CSST.

PLUMBING 17

CSST Strike Plates

The IRC requires strike-plate protection when tubing passes through fram ing & is closer than l ' /2in. of the surface.

The UPC requires strike-plate protection for all penetrations.

Codes require the strike-plates to extend 4in. beyond the concealed framing & manufacturer recommendations are usua Iy more stringent than tre codes.

Temperature & Pressure-Relief Valve

When the water heater is in a basement or below grade, it may not be possible to arrange for a gravity drain of the T &P valve. A Watts 210 valve (F45) can be installed. The temperature-sensing bulb of the valve goes in the upper portion of the tank & the gas piping runs through the valve. The Watts 210 shuts off the gas if the temperature is excessive. In addition, a separate water-pressure-relief valve (F4S) must be installed in the piping & must drain by gravity to an approved location. Check with the local Administrative Authority to see if this method is accepted in your area.

Subpanel

In a downstream subpanel, the white neutral & the equipment grounds must not be bonded together. The neutral MUST be insulated from contacting the metal enclosure & any equipment grounds. Bonding these conductors is hazardous because it will cause neutral currents to travel on metal services of electrical boxes & conduits.
