Imagine AusKn Comprehensive Plan’s Growth Concept Map
Why is this urgent? Because the Project is now compleKng the first phase of the public input
process, which will be documented by the OpKcos consultant team in the “Listening to the Community Report”.

“Revise Aus*n’s development regula*ons and processes to promote a compact and connected city.” …a complete community…
What is the Land Development Code?
RegulaBons for the use and development of land: – WHAT can be built – WHERE it can be built – HOW MUCH can be built – HOW it can be used – WHEN it can be used
CodeNEXT’s PrioriBes • Maintaining and creaBng the types of places we love. • Encouraging greater choice and affordability in housing. • ProtecBng our precious natural resources. • Providing predictability to help businesses thrive. • Helping create development that makes walking, biking, and public transportaBon real opBons for geVng around.
Imagine AusBn Comprehensive Plan
• Community Vision • Guide for managing change • Reference for decision-‐making • DirecBon for more detailed city plans, investments, iniBaBves
Realizing the Plan: The Imagine Aus*n 8 “Priority Programs” AIA, CNU & ASLA-‐IDENTIFIED BIG ISSUE AREAS

Proposed AIA/CNU/ASLA Task Force Timeline: Aug 22-‐23rd: AIA AusKn Summer Conference with LDC Survey & Speakers on Imagine AusKn
Oct 28th: AIA AusKn Advocacy Roundtable on Planning focusing on CodeNEXT Nov 20th: AIA and CNU created a CodeNEXT Task Force to provide input to OpKcos by Dec 16th. (We’d like to include ASLA in our group.)
Nov 25th: Task Force fleshes out Top Ten Issue Areas & recruits Issue leaders and members to: 1. IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE KEY PROBLEMS with the LDC issue areas and the
development review process; 2. OUTLINE BETTER APPROACHES to regula*ng these; and 3. PROVIDE BRIEF CASE STUDIES/DESCRIPTIONS illumina*ng both the problems and possible
approaches (through interac*ve Google Mapping – available today)
Dec 3rd & Dec 11th : Issue Area Teams to Workshop/Review Above Deliverables Dec 16th & through Jan 2014: Present Summary at MeeKng with OpKcos/COA Project Team, and at Public MeeKngs and Community Forums
Proposed Format for Task Force Input: Provide concise, illustrated Powerpoint slide series to describe the following:
1. IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE KEY PROBLEMS with the LDC issue areas and the development review process;
2. OUTLINE BETTER APPROACHES to regula*ng these; and 3. PROVIDE BRIEF CASE STUDIES/DESCRIPTIONS illumina*ng both the problems and possible
approaches (through interac*ve Google Mapping – available today)
Example: HOUSEHOLD AFFORDABILITY & COMPACT DEVELOPMENT PROBLEM/ISSUE: Certain site development regula*ons restrict housing types and
nega*vely impact housing affordability -‐ par*cularly in the current SF-‐3 zoning district -‐ such as: • Minimum lot sizes require large amounts of land and hinders “compact and
connected” development padern • Minimum front, side and rear lot setbacks
• Maximum impervious and building cover prohibits higher u*liza*on of land
• Minimum off-‐street parking is land-‐consump*ve and does not recognize promote other transporta*on op*ons
• Secondary or accessory units not allowed, reducing the flexibility for homeowners to stay in their neighborhood -‐ have op*ons for different phases of their life
PROPOSED APPROACH: Develop and allow “affordable by design” housing types throughout a broad spectrum of zoning districts; and develop urban design standards for these new types to assure compa*bility in exis*ng single-‐family neighborhoods.
CASE STUDIES: Mueller, Pocket Neighborhoods, Microhousing Units, etc. Elaborate on these per format described in the online survey (address below).

Encouraging Missing Middle Housing: Key to Code Success
FOR CASE STUDIES: include great photos, diagrams, site plans, etc., like these that help illustrate the problem or a proposed approach.
AusBn’s Missing Middle
Duplex
Small Lot, Small Unit Single Family Duplex
Fourplex
FOR CASE STUDIES: include great photos, diagrams, site plans, etc., like these that help illustrate the problem or a proposed approach.
Missing Middle
20 dwelling units/acre Richmond Livable Corridors: Richmond, CA
FOR CASE STUDIES: include great photos, diagrams, site plans, etc., like these that help illustrate the problem or a proposed approach.
Other OpportuniKes for Sharing Case Studies:
• The OpBcos Team is compiling case studies and tagging them to specific places in AusBn (these don’t have to reveal exact addresses)
• Add comments, addresses, photos, links, and other informaBon to a placemark on an online Google Map
• View the map here: hkp://goo.gl/maps/tcQOF
Proposed Format for Task Force Input: 3. PROVIDE BRIEF CASE STUDIES/DESCRIPTIONS illumina*ng both the problems and
possible approaches (through interac*ve Google Mapping – available Dec 3rd & 11th )

Three ways to add your case studies to the map: • Include your case study in your survey response
Online: hkp://surveymonkey.com/s/AIA_Summer_Conference
• Send an email with case study info to: [email protected]
• Share your experiences with Jared during our next two workshops, Dec 3rd and 11th (12:00PM – 1:30PM) at the Center, and we’ll map them on the spot!
