• What clues do we have?• How shall we work with them?
What are we assuming?
How?

An intuitive approach
• Probably, one or two of you have already spotted what this is.
• Raise your hand if you know.In a while I will be asking you to say how you knew.
![Page 6: Codes and Code Breaking](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022081419/56815a8b550346895dc8018c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
A systematic approach
Make a table of the characters used

What to expect.• Make the same

In a city synonymous with hope against all odds, the Ohio State men'sbasketball team stared down another sticky situation in the Alamodometo defeat Memphis and advance to the NCAA Final Four. Madness is onthe march -- to Atlanta.
"Three years ago, we had a vision for this program. It just becamereality," OSU coach Thad Matta said as chants of O-H-I-O filled thearena after the Buckeyes' 92-76 win against Memphis. OSU now heads toSaturday's national semifinals.
The reality didn't come easy.
The No. 1 Buckeyes seldom take the simple route to success, as provedin the past two games when they needed late and big comebacks againstXavier and Tennessee.
Yesterday's win against the second-seeded Tigers in the South Regionalfinal was no different, despite the 16-point margin of victory.
Ohio State (34-3) needed its four freshmen to play like seniors, andneeded one of those kids, 7-foot center Greg Oden, to help wipe away afive-point deficit with 12:39 to play.

Word spotting• Focused on short common words• Spotted a few words• Guessed it was a reversed
alphabet.• Checked it.
Why do we know this is the answer?

Why we think it is right.
• It looks like EnglishThe encoding we found makes sense

• Use word spotting as just shown.Bring solution to class on Wednesday.

Frequencies
• The frequency pattern for the reversed alphabet exactly mirrors that of the plain textHomework hint follows

Big assumption• Each time a letter appears in the
plaintext it will map to the same letter in the ciphertext.Techically, this makes the ciphers we have considered so far “monoalphabetic”. Polyalphabetic ciphers exist, and are widely used.
