Codorníu, pioneer in wine tourism in El Penedès

The «Wine Tourism Awards» promote and recognize excellence and innovation in wine tourism, in which Codorníu is also a pioneer. The company was among the first to open its cellars to the public with the aim of transmitting its values to its visitors (more than 80,000 in 2016). We have found documents and advertisements of 1924 in which Codorníu already announced its visiting hours.

grapes, among others. The wine tourism offer is very extensive: guided tours in the winery, tasting courses, bicycle tours through the vineyards, wine tasting and wine-pairing with gastronomic products of the country, workshops for children and many other proposals.

But what really makes the visit unique and memorable is the story that accompanies Codorníu, the oldest family company in Spain. Its beginnings go back to 1551 in the same space where today the company has its cellars, a jewel of Modernism by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, disciple of Gaudí. In addition, the well-known “Cava Cathedral” is also its cradle, since it was in the Codorníu cellar of Sant Sadurní where Josep Raventós, around 1872, uncorked the first bottles of cava.

Codorníu, from 1551

Codorníu Raventós group, leader of the sector, is the oldest family company in Spain and one of the oldest in the world, as well as the promoter of cava. With nearly 3,000 hectares of vineyards owned since 1551, it has more than 450 years of experience and has received more than 150 awards and recognitions in wines and cavas in the last 5 years.

Currently it has 10 wineries, eight in Spain (Bodegas Bilbaínas, Legaris, Scala Dei, Raimat, Bach, Nuviana, Abadía de Poblet, and Codorníu), and one in Napa Valley, in California, (Artesa) and another in Mendoza - Argentina (Septima). Its most recent project is Ars Collecta, its masterpiece, a collection that includes Jaume Codorníu, three estate cavas (La Fideuera, El Nuevo and La Pleta), and 456, the most valuable cava in history.
