Eco Day 2014

On the following pages:

We earned our first ECO-SCHOOLS GREEN FLAG

in June 2013 and will be working towards our second one this summer (2015).

We have an Eco-committee that have been elected and meet every half term but we also have a weekly Eco-club where any pupil who wants to help is welcome.

The Eco-club meets every Tuesday lunch time and Wednesday after school.

Pupils can work their way up the ladder from being part of the the Eco-action team, then become Eco-rangers, Eco-ambassadors and finally, Eco-captains.

How it works

Year 7 – Callum Taylor, Chardonnay Davies

Year 8 – Teigan Taylor, Ciaron Wildes

Year 9 – Tamzin Jones, Kyle Morris

Year 10 – Andrew Jennings, Sarah Kelleher

Year 11 – Karina Griba, Kouri Vaughen

Members of the Eco club also attend the committee

meetings.

1. LITTER – put your litter in the bins!

2. RECYCLE WASTE – Recycle in classrooms and in outdoor

recycling bins. Bring in old batteries, mobile phones,

clothes etc.

3. SAVE ENERGY- remind people to close corridor windows and

switch off to save electricity.

4. IMPROVING SCHOOL GROUNDS – help us improve the

school garden. Can you donate any containers or

wellington boots?

5. GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP – Help us raise money for local and

global charities!

Action plan

We have joined litter picks with Keep Wales Tidy and been on a trip

to see the local ‘CWM Environmental’ recycling facility in Johnstown in

Carmarthen. We did this to try and understand how what we are doing

at school helps the environment.

We joined RagBag a few years ago, and we have had a number of

collections. We have been raising the money to improve the school

grounds. We also joined the Recycool scheme which helps to encourage

people to recycle their old phones, CDs, DVDs and tablets so you can

always bring these in for us.

In the garden we have planted vegetables, herbs and other

wonderful plants which will supply us with food and oxygen. We also

keep a wormery and a compost bin and reuse tyres to make raised beds.

We are starting a blog on the Jointhepod website, so see you there!

Eco-clubJoin us for club on Tuesday lunchtimes in Room 5. Bring a packed lunch. You can also come Wednesday after school to help in the garden!

This year on Eco-Day we presented an Eco-assembly and all pupils took part in ‘The Wales we Want’ activity which was linked to the national conversation on the future of sustainable living in Wales.

In the past, some lucky pupils have also had workshops with Size of Wales Rainforest Project, YnniDa Energy, TATA Steel and Camarthenshire County Council Sustainability Officers.

Olivia Rawlings of Year 7 has just won a recycling graphics competition which has seen her design printed on a Carms CC postcard thanking the local community for recycling more.
