Co-existence

• Concurrence

• Conformity

• Synchronicity

• Conjunction

• Simultaneous

Introduction

Master Data Explained

Co-existence is defined as

‘To exist together, at the same time, or in the same place’

This loosely translates – in the business world – of having multiple systems/solutions being used and available in the same business workplace.

Introduction

Think back a couple of decades ago - Payroll/HR , CRM/Sales , Shop Floor / Manufacturing-MES systems that existed then

A separate system was used for each of these functions

The business acumen and focus was to get the best functionality for each set of processes

The current model of co-existence now is no different

People still choose a robust system for their backend / operational processes and more ‘modern’ systems for their customer facing functions

Reality

A couple of decades ago there were multiple companies providing solutions for business functions

These were disparate systems and the challenge was in integrating them

Business’s maintained the need for focused systems to do specific tasks due to efficiencies garnered from these focused solutions

They managed to live with the challenges in integration

Then assimilation and mergers became the mantra all around!!

Current

Then assimilation and mergers became the mantra all around!!

This did not mean that they all merged into one big solution, they kept the best of breed

And attacked the integration challenge

Welcome to the world of standards based integration methodologies and packaged solutions!

This has now brought back co-existence in a big way – with better integration

Co-existence

Types

Types

There are different types of co-existence that exist Hardware being hosted and you owning the application

related licenses So you do not own the hardware

Hardware and software being paid for in a subscription model The current and an efficient method of pay as you use

reality

We are not going to discuss hardware related co-existence

The key being some OnPremise applications managing your business functions and others being managed as ‘hosted’ These non on-premise solutions are commonly called –

‘Cloud solutions’

Co-existence

What does it mean?

11

A full circle of business functions – each that can be addressed by a separate solution

What does it mean

This typically means that

There are multiple solution providers for your business

Some business functions are performed in one system

and others are on a different system

There is need for integration between each of these - in

most cases - disparate systems

The processes need to be mature for these disparate

systems to work together to provide business sense

and efficacy

How do you choose

Functionality co-existence focuses on areas that – either do not exist in the current solution

– extends in some way inherent functionality and;

– enhances the user experience

Large corporations have existing backend operational / accounting systems that have limitations in their framework

This makes them in many ways inflexible to manage changes in the current fluid market or new business models

The newer functionality and solutions are nimble and are typically customer facing systems that are expected to be agile and user-friendly

CRM

Online Subscription

Payroll

Solutions – Current market trends

Zuora is a one of the leaders in the subscription space

There are others that also provide subscription tracking

in an exemplary fashion – Recurly, Stripe, Chargify and

others

Concur is a market leader in expense management

software with others – Expensify, Replicon to name a few

ADP is probably the most common Payroll software used

(in the US), and it is the most common coexistence

based solution in the market

Oracle also has some products that work in this manner

between Ebusiness Suite and Cloud ERP

Co-existence

How does it affect the user

How does it effect the user?

The major challenges using coexistence software models

Integration

Integration

Integration

This is the most common problem thread and the offerings are now using common methodologies to integrate

Other challenges include how much of the backend data they can access and use
