Improving COG services

COG’s MIS project strengthens business efficiency

COG is modernizing its business practices with a new Management Information System (MIS) that is strengthening COG member value. Three new integrated systems are being used to streamline and automate COG business and project management processes.

COG office renovation

New year,new work environment

In December, COG completed the first phase of renovations to its office focusing on refreshing, modernizing and enhancing the work environment, including upgrades to the digital space. COG members and staff alike will enjoy a more effective and efficient space customized for collaboration.

CNNO site visit brings opportunity

COG staff visit Qinshan Plant

In November, COG staff completed a site visit at CNNO’s QinshanNuclear Plant located in Zhejiang Province in China. They talked with the CNNO team, discussing opportunities for training, COG products and services, and were part of a tour of the facilities where two CANDU-6 reactors are currently operating.

C6 Fleet convenes in Korea

C6 Fleet Forum tackles common issues

The C6 Fleet Steering Committee met for a face-to-face meeting in Gyeongju, following TCM Korea, to review the status of on-going projects and to discuss priorities for 2020. The Forum provides an opportunity to exchange information on design, safety analyses, equipment lifecycles and other common areas of interest.

Darlington refurbishment

Performance update

The first of 6,240 fuel bundles have been loaded into Darlington Nuclear’s Unit 2 as the refurbishment progresses. Read about this milestone and how Ontario Power Generation is preparing to power Ontario with 30+ years of clean energy in their latest quarterly update.

Bruce-Cameco MCR milestone

Bruce Power and Cameco complete first full reactor set of calandria tubes

In November, Bruce Power and Cameco celebrated the completion of the first full reactor set of 480 calandria tubes for Bruce Power’s Major Component Replacement (MCR) project that is scheduled to begin on Unit 6 in 2020.

SNN Romania selects SNC-Lavalin-led consortium for Cernavoda project

In October, Romania’s SocietateaNationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) awarded a $13.9 million engineering services contract to a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin as it scopes the work ahead of a planned refurbishment and life extension project for its Cernavoda plant’s unit 1 reactor.

In December, COG member CNNO (China National Nuclear Power Management) awarded a contract to COG supplier participant SNC-Lavalin awarded for pre-project work for the proposed two-unit Advanced Heavy Water Reactor new build project in China.

CNL advancing SMR deployment

CNL to fund SMR vendor collaborations

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) announced in November that it had selected the first recipients of the Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI). This initiative seeks to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Canada by enabling research and development and connecting global vendors of SMR technology with facilities and expertise.

NWMO advances Canada’s plan for long-term waste

In November, COG participant Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) advanced its site selection process for a deep geological repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel. The organization will narrow its focus from five to two potential siting areas, an important advancement in Canada’s plan.

Grossi takes office as IAEA Director General

In December, Argentinian diplomat Rafael Mariano Grossi took office as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after winning unanimous support from the organization’s member states.

Nuclear industry’s economic impact

New study shows nuclear industry adds $17 billion annually to Canadian economy

"Benefits of Nuclear Energy for Canadians,” a study released in November, shows Canada's nuclear industry accounts for 76,000 jobs across the country, an increase from 60,000 jobs in 2012. It was released jointly by the Canadian Nuclear Association and the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries.
