Important considerations for upgrades

A persistent configuration cache is now available

Prior to version 9.1, the configuration cache was built dynamically for each project the fi rst time a project

was accessed. This could have significant performance ramifications for Cockpit domains w ith lots of

configurations. With the new persistent cache option, logins are faster, in addition to changing projects

and accessing multiple projects in a single request. Note that the cache must be rebuilt on any

configuration changes, so use of a persistent cache is not very helpful in a development environment.

Cognition recommends the persistent cache be used in a production environment.

Any new domains default to a persistent cache but domains upgraded to 9.1 need to manually enable the

persistent cache. This can be done on the Configuration page of the top level organization. Click the

Enable link as shown on the image below.

It is important for any users who are upgrading to know that the precedence of configurations is slightly

different with a persistent cache. While the use case where this may have an impact is very rare, we

recommend you review your current configurations to be sure there won 't be a behavior change as a

resu It of the upgrade.

In Cockpit, there are two separate inheritance models that interact: class inheritance (typica l of any

object oriented system) and hierarchical inherence (allows organizational overrides of configurations). In

the persistent model, hierarchical inheritance takes precedence over class inherit ance. This is best

understood with an example:

SnippetA on Requirements at Site

SnippetA on All Project Data Objects at Organization A

Project A in Organization A

In the tradit ional model (prior to 9.1):

Class inheritance takes precedence, so for requirements in Project A, SnippetA from Site is used.

In the new, persistent model:

Hierarchical inheritance has precedence, so for requirements in Project A, SnippetA from Organization A

is used.

Changes for multiple data vaults:

Turn on the multiple vault preference in the General section of the Site Preferences page:

- Site Preferences C General Voicces Re-guirements Risks Tests

File Storage Preferences ►

Data Vault Preferences T

Use Multiple Vaults: [<IJ

Proj ect Threshold: 100

Active Vault: 1

Logical Vault Usage: 4, 0, O, 0, 0

This option is needed for domains wi th more than 500 projects. Cockpit defaults to 100 projects per vault;

this should never be more than 500 total. The Logica l Vaul t Usage is approximately the number of

projects per vault. There are 5 total data vaults, so Cognition recommends you estimate the maximum

Cc" 2018 Cngr,1t1nn Corpo ratrcn Page 5 o f 34

Page 7: coGNITION®download.cognition.us/files/cockpit/docs/CC91_ReleaseNotes.pdf · Cognition recommends the persistent cache be used in a production environment. Any new domains default

l:..\COGNITION® NAVIGATING PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

number of projects you expect to have in your domain and divide that by 5 to get the threshold value

above. If that number is less than 100, we recommend you leave the value at 100.

Cockpit starts with Data Vault 1, and adds projects until it breaks the threshold. It then moves on to Vault

2, then Vault 3, et cetera, filling each one evenly with projects one vau lt at a time. For customers who

already have more than the threshold in Vault 1, Cockpit switches to Vault2 when the option to use

multiple vaults is active. The thresholds are not hard limits, just d istribution guidelines.

Configuration compatibility changes:

In order to prevent configurations at an organization or project level from gaining modify access to data

to which a user may not have modify access rights, this version restricts persistent data changes to

Cognition-supplied methods or user defined methods which can only be created at the site level. You can

now only use SetAtt r in user defined methods: if you have configurations with cal ls to SetAtt r, they must

be moved into user defi ned methods. The same is true for persistent maps: they can only be updated in

user defined methods.

IDE/Configuration improvements

Many improvements have been made to the Cockpit Integrated Development Envi ronment (IDE) feature

and to the configuration capabilities in Cockpit. The entire list is shown in the section titled "Cont inuous

improvement enhancements and bug fixes," but some of the more notable ones are listed here:

Imported configu rations can now be staged for evaluation prior to being appl ied to the domain. This can

be very helpful to assess the change impact of the imported configurations before making them availab le

for use. Any of the items in the import can either be incorporated ind ivid ually or as part of a bulk action.

The staging information is also retained indefinitely as a record of the import.

The Cockpit IDE now supports full versioning of configurations and allows differencing of all att ributes on

configurations.

The Lock option on a configuration is now only available in the I DE and is only shown if there is no

configuration workflow. If the configuration workflow is on, the user must use check out and check in.

The configuration Tab le of Contents for site setup and organizations is reo rganized to group

configuration types by function. This should make it much easier to find specific configurations.

Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) code is encapsulated to allow easier configu ration of the FTA content. In prior

versions, it was necessary to override the entire FTA content generation. For example, the mit igat ion

section of an FTA node cou ld be configu red separately while still using the Cockpit code for all other parts

of the FT A tree.

Configuration authors can override specific history action links shown on the History page to the right of a

version record (i.e. Export to PDF) . In prior versions, changes to the history action required overriding the

entire history actions method.

Configurations now support an option to move them from one parent location to another, preserving

history. This can be very helpful when you need to move a configuration between organ izations.

A new mechanism has been added to compare two configurations in different organizat ions that have the

same type, class, and name. This can be very useful when trying to determine what is different with a

configuration that is overriding the same configuration at a higher level.

The load t ime is less impacted by the number of configurat ions than previously.

Cockpit now has a mechanism to disable configurations during a session. Th is disables all configurations

from being used wi thin the session. This feature can be very helpfu I in determining the impact

configurations have on Cockpit functionality. It should be used with caution because in a highly

Page 7 o f 34

configured environment, there may be many Cockpit documents that require the configu rations in order

to work properly. The new feature does not disable user defined methods.

Page 8 o f 34

Configuration workflow

Some of the highlights of this new functionality:

Developers can test configuration changes in Cockp it before making the configurations available for

other users. This can be very helpful when you have a significant number of Cockpit users working in a

configuration development domain. Use of this featu re is only available as part of the check out/check in

capability in the new Configuration Workflow feature. If you want to get a demo of this feature or try it out

on your own, please contact your application engineer or your Cognition salesperson. More detail on the

Configuration Workflow feature is available in the next section of these release notes.

Cockpit now supports export and import of configurations across multiple levels of organization

hierarchy and import of configurations into multiple levels of organization with a single import file. This

feature can be very helpful for companies that have multiple levels of configurations to support

differences between different organizations within the company. The export functionality also requ ires

the Configuration Workflow feature but the import part of this does not require the feature.

There is also a new GetFlexTableSimple programmatic interface to streamline the Flex Table interface.

This method is much easier to use than the full GetFlexTable method which takes 12 arguments.

Performance and optimization

As noted in the section on important considerations for these upgrades, speed improvements are part of

the changes to the persistent cache: logins are faster, in addition to changing projects and accessing

multiple projects in a single request. Note that the cache must be rebui lt on any configuration changes,

but this should not be frequent in a production environment.

The precedence of configurations is slightly different with a persistent cache.

This new model allows the configuration inheritance model to be determined one time and shared for

subsequent sessions for any user. Addi tionally, projects that use the same set of configurations can now

share a single in-memory cache, eliminating the need to recom pute this as projects are activated.

To efficiently achieve this in both production and development environments, there is a subtle change in

how the configuration caches in the build. In Cockpit, there are two separate inheritance models that

interact: class inheritance (typical of any object oriented system) and hierarchical inherence (allows

organizational overrides of configurations). In the persistent model, hierarchical inheritance takes

precedence over class inheritance.

In prior versions of Cockpit, there could be dramatic performance differences between administrative and

non-administrative users. Th is difference was caused by the expense for a modify access check with a

non-administrative user. In version 9.1, t he Modify Access check for non-administrative users has been

improved significantly and can be up to five times faster. This is especially noticeable on documents

which include large tables of editable data. The performance improvements also make the display t ime

somewhat faster for even administrative users.

Visual Navigator performance is improved with faster load times. The navigator links now rem ain on

checkpointed documents, and the visual navigator no longer creates database locks due to frequent

updates of the user preferences.

The compile time of configurations is much faster, and is especially noticeable for login performance. The

times for loading the Cockpit code and configurations on login is approximately twice as fast as prior

version s.

Licensing improvements

Cockpit now has the ability to get different Cockpit features from di fferent license server hosts. Prior to

9.1, all Cockpit features had to be obtained from the same server the base Cockpit license came from.

This limitation would cause issues when multiple license servers were in use and some features were only

available on one license server. In 9.1, the features can come from any of the license servers regardless of

where the original Cockpit license was obtained.

Enhancements

USll 781 Tabular import is now available in Chrome where in prior versions it was only su pported in IE.

USll 783 Imported configurations can now be staged for evaluation prior to being applied to the domain.

This can be very helpful to assess the change impact of the imported configurations before making them

available for use. Any of the items in the import can either be incorporated ind ividually or as part of a bulk

action. The staging information is also retained indefinitely as a record of the import.

US11784 Configuration authors can test configuration changes in Cockpit before making the

configurations available for other users. This can be very helpful when you have a significant number of

Cockpit users working in a configuration development domain. Use of this feature is only available as part

of the check out/check in capability in the new Configuration Workflow feature. If you want to get a demo

of this feature or try it out on your own, please contact your application engineer or your Cognition

salesperson.

USll 785 Cockpit 9.1 includes support for IDE 2.0. This new IDE version has significant improvements for

managing configuration versions and deployment of configurat ions. For details, see the IDE 2.0 release

notes.

US11986 It is now possible to get IDE (feature) and Cockpit l icenses from different l icense servers.

US11993 A new dialog configuration class is implemented. See the release note section on Cockpit

Configuration/lDE Enhancements for more details.

US12033 Tabular import now stops on a full blank row instead of on the fi rst blank cel l in the first column

as it did in prior versions.

US12720 Cockpit now supports applying version labels to configu rations. These labels are associated

with a specific version of the configuration. The labels provide a way to export previous states of

configurations.

US12722/ENH44780 Cockpit now supports a Destructor configuration which is executed anytime an

object is deleted.

US12724 Cockpit now supports Code Modules and name spaces that allow developers to organize

configurations in a different structure than the current Cockpit organization structu re. This feature is

expected to be mostly used by Cognit ion to deploy new features on top of the Cockpit base platform.

US12768 Cockpit now supports a configuration workflow with options to have Checkout/Checkin or

Checkout/Checkin/Approval workflows in addition to the default "no workflow."

US12769 Cockpit now has additional privileges to handle data and configuration administration. The site

and organization privileges were revised to change the roles associated with Site Administration.

US12779 Clicking on a project name in the header of the Cockpit window causes the body page to

navigate to that project's home page.

US12785 Cockpit native Excel and Visio document usage has been deprecated, but existing documents

still function. You can also sti ll create these documents from templates. The current implementation of

these documents is dependent on Internet Explorer and therefore they will no longer function when

Internet Explorer is no longer supported. Microsoft is phasing out Internet Explorer.

US13070/ENH43856 In an active CR, converting a local copy back to a link is now allowed. This creates a

new object to represent the link because the converted item still needs to be ava ilable outside the scope

of the CR.

US13071/ENH43855 In an active CR, converting a linked object back to a copy is now allowed. This

creates a new object to represent the copy because the converted item st ill needs t o be available outside

the scope of the CR.

US13082/BUG44909, ENH44343 Reviewers no longer require modify privileges on a project in order to

participate in the review.

US13089 Cockpit now supports export and import of configurations across multiple levels of organization

hierarchy and import of configurations into multiple levels of organization with a single import file. This

feature can be very helpful wit h companies that have multiple levels of configurat ions to support

differences between different organizations with in the company. The export functionality also requ ires

the Configuration Workflow feature butthe import part of this does not require the feature.

US13127 /EN H44933 Side-by-side differences are now avai lable that just show original and new document

content with no highlighting.

US13128/EN H44432 Users now have an option to show a rapid adder that allows the equals sign to link to

existing objects but does not allow creation of new objects.

US13129/ENH43775 Workflow states now have an option to allow users to create links between objects

without having modify access to the objects being linked.

versioning events.

US13154 The Cockpit IDE now supports full versioning of configu rations and allows differencing of al l

attributes on configurations.

US13237 The official version for a Configuration can now be pinned to a previous version.

US13311 Cockpit configurat ion can be marked as deprecated after a specific version.

US13335 Deletion of configuration is restricted to users with configu ration access or configurat ion

approval (when required).

US13582 Configuration approvers at the site level have implicit "view" on all o rganizations.

US13586 The configuration Table of Contents for site setup and organizations is reorganized to group

configuration types by function. Th is should make it much easier to fi nd specific configurations.

US13706/ENH45067 During association, the URL parameters are stored on the thread using the

"sParams" key so they can be accessed in association defi nitions.

US13807 /EN H45120 The Assign Workflow action has an Append option, which appends the selected users

or groups to the role. You shou Id not use this option if you want to remove any of the cu rrent users or

groups assigned to the role.

US13809/ENH45116 The Assign action for workflow roles now has choices for "Current User" and "None."

US13878 It is now possible to track configurations added from an import.

US13928/ EN H45135 Audit logs now have the option to show t he username and the full name. This can be

set in the user interface settings under General Preferences in Site Setup.

US14055 Server utilities, such as the Word/ PDF export utility, are now packaged in a version-specific way

to better support multiple versions of Cockpit running on the same server.

US14084 The Shell Execute command is rest ructured to make it more secu re.

US14125 Improved the Cockpit document section indentation to be consistent; the checkpoint export

looks the same as the in-process export.

US14149 There is now an interface for calling the class parent implementation of a configuration.
