the user learns about the interface in an exploratory way, the user has goals, the user is applying simple means-ends reasoning.

Evaluation by an expert, who goes through a set task while imitatinguser performance

Where does it come from? APPLYING COGNITIVE WALKTHROUGHSTO MORE COMPLEX USER INTERFACES:EXPERIENCES, ISSUES, ANDRECOMMENDATIONS The Cognitive Walkthrough is

designed to be used iteratively, earlyin the design cycle, by individuals orgroups. Either software developersor usability specialists can performthe Walkthrough. It is a task-basedmethodology that serves to focus anevaluators attention on the users

goals and actions, and on the systemaffordances that support or hinderthe effective accomplishment ofthose goals (Wharton, et al., 1992)

    Jakob Nielsen, UsabilityInspection Methods (1994)

Nielsen, in Ch. 5 of this seminalbook, outlines how to perform
