Cohiba, Fidel Castros preferred brand, was created in 1966 as Havanas premier brand for diplomatic purposes.

Since 1982, it was offered to the public in three sizes: Lanceros, Coronas Especiales and Panetelas. In 1989, three more sizes were added to complete the classic line namely: Esplendidos, Robustos and Exquisitos.

In 1992, the following five sizes were further made in order to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Cuba in 1492: Siglo I, II, III, IV and V.

In 1935, Alonso Menendez purchased the Particulares cigar factory in Cuba with hopes of creating a new premium cigar brand. During this time, it was common among torcedores (cigar rollers) to have the famous Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" read by a lector on the cigar rolling floor. Inspired by this tradition, Menendez gave life to one of the most well know cigar brands today - Montecristo.

Shakespeare’s most famous theatrical work, Romeo & Juliet, has captured imaginations and served as global inspiration for over 500 years. Inocensio Alvarez and Manin Garcia used this inspiration to establish Romeo y Julieta in 1875 in Cuba.

After a number of years producing highly respected, top quality cigars, Alvarez and Garcia's dedication to the brand paid off. Romeo y Julieta earned numerous gold medals at tasting exhibitions between 1885 and 1890; propelling the brand to increased notoriety around Cuba and the rest of the world.

In 1843, a German banker by the name of Hermann Dietrich Upmann landed in Havana. He was there to set up a business for a German import/export company. Upmann saw potential. Along with estab-lishing a banking business catering to tobacco dealers and manufacturers, Upmann bought a local cigar factory and the first ‘H. Upmann’ cigar brand was born in 1844. Hermann worked until 1890 and was succeeded by his nephew, Heinrich.

The Trinidad Fundadores has been exclusively produced for Fidel Castro since 1980 – so the story goes. For many years, the only boxes of the cigars that were allowed to leave Cuba were the ones presented to foreign diplomats as gifts.

The brand made its official launch as a Cuban export in February of 1998. By April of that year, the Trinidad brand became available in Canada. This cigar features one of the founders (fundadores). It is similar in size to the Cohiba Lancero.
