Breanna Skipper played a vital role as a freshman for the Coker softball team. She played multiple positions, but her biggest contributions came on the mound. Skipper posted an 11-4 record with one save, a 2.14 ERA with 60 strikeouts over 104 2-3 innings. At the plate she had three doubles, a triple, seven RBIs and eight runs scored.

Skipper, a biology major, hails from Bennettsville, S.C. She is the daughter of Robert and Mary Skipper.

Tom Sizeland was the No. 2 runner for the cross country team, posting sub-30 minute 8K times in four meets. He is fifth all-time at Coker for an 8K race with a time of 26:52. In tennis, Sizeland played No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Cobras, posting records of 15-6 in singles and a 15-8 in doubles. He helped Coker win its first-ever conference title and earn a No. 6 ranking in the Southeast region.

Sizeland is a biology major with a pre-medical concentration at Coker. Originally from Hamilton, New Zealand, Sizeland is the son of Peter and Wilma Sizeland.

James Sweeney, a four-year starter and two-time captain for the men’s soccer team, led the Cobras to an overall record of 49-19-9 during his career. He holds the school record in games started (74), shutouts (32) and goals-against average (0.787). During Sweeney’s career, Coker has won the conference regular-season and tournament titles twice and, in his junior year, the team earned a bid to the NCAA tournament and hosted the second round of regionals for the first time in school history.

Sweeney’s career individual postseason awards include: Daktronics All-American and two-time all-region selections, two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Scholar All-American Team selection, Capital One Academic All-American Team, three-time all-conference, two-time conference scholar-athlete of the year, conference defensive player of the year and a four-time conference presidential honor roll and Coker dean’s list member. He has also won the C.G. Timberlake Coker College Athlete of the Year and Coker freshman of the year awards.

Off the field, Sweeney boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as a mathematics and computer science double-major, and is a member of Coker’s Enactus team. He was the recipient of Conference Carolinas’ highest individual award, the Murphy Osborne Award, which is given to the most outstanding conference student-athlete each academic year. Student-athletes are nominated based on academic, athletic, leadership and service and community excellence. He was Coker’s first recipient of this award since 1995, when softball player Liz Clack won it.

Sweeney is from Huntingtown, Md., and is the son of Franklin and Christine Sweeney.

regular season success: 2012 was another fulfilling year for the Cobra men’s soccer team and fourth year head coach Paul Leese. Leese and the Cobras came into the season with big aspirations and lived up to them by finishing 12-4-1 to capture their second consecutive Conference Carolinas regular-season title. The Cobras were tabbed 18th in the preseason NSCAA/Continental Tire College Rankings, marking the first time in program history that the Cobras were ranked nationally in a preseason poll. On top of the national ranking the Cobras were picked as the top team in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, also another first in program history.

Postseason Play: The Cobras entered the Conference Carolinas tournament as the top seed for the second consecutive season, looking to win their second consecutive tournament title. A berth in the tournament title game would’ve marked a fourth consecutive trip to the tournament championship, and a win would’ve meant an unprecedented third title in four years. The Cobras matched up with Queens University of Charlotte in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament, which resulted in a 2-1 loss. The Cobras finished the season ranked 10th in the final NCAA Southeast Regional rankings.

Plaques on Plaques on Plaques: For the second straight year the Cobras flooded academic and athletic awards lists on the conference, regional, and national level. As a team the Cobras won the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award. That award was followed up by six players being named to the Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference team. The list was led by seniors Noah Lascell, David Pent, and James Sweeney, and joining them were juniors Atticus Lum, Brendan McCarron, and Tyler Staub.

Sweeney received multiple academic honors from Conference Carolinas as he was named the Murphy Osborne Award winner, and then the Scholar Athlete of the Year for a second straight year. Sweeney also earned a spot on the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Men’s College Division Scholar All-South Region first team, which led to his second team selection on the NSCAA Men’s College Division Scholar All-America team.

The on-field accolades for the Cobras begin with two Conference Carolinas Player of the Week selections in seniors Carlos Recinos and Niko Tirkkonen.

The Cobras swept three of the four major awards for the second straight year on the Conference Carolinas All-Conference list. Coach Paul Leese was named Coach of the Year for a second straight year. Tirkkonen was named Player of the Year, marking the second consecutive year that a Cobra has won the award. James Sweeney rounded out the major awards for the Cobras as he was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Seniors Tirkkonen, Recinos, and Sweeney were all named to the All-Conference First Team. Joining them were junior Akeem Prendes and sophomore Fernando Bedoya. Senior Alan Cuevas and Junior Daniel Jackson rounded out the All-Conference selections by picking up Third Team honors.

Tirkkonen and Prendes were then named to the 2012 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-Southeast Region Team. Tirkkonen was a First Team selection, while Prendes was a Second Team honoree. Tirkkonen was also named to the NSCAA 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-Southeast Region Team. Joining Tirkkonen on the team were seniors Recinos, Sweeney, and sophomore Bedoya. Tirkkonen, Recinos, and Bedoya were First Team honorees, and Sweeney a Second Team selection. Recinos was the only Cobra to earn All-American status as he was named to the 2012 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Men’s All-America Third Team.

record setter: James Sweeney became a record setter during his time at Coker. As a four-year starter in goal he holds the school record in games started (74), shutouts (32) and goals-against average (0.787). During Sweeney’s career, Coker has won the conference regular-season and tournament titles twice and, in his junior year, the team earned a bid to the NCAA tournament and hosted the second round of regionals for the first time in school history.

fighting the bug: The Cobra women’s volleyball team endured an injury plagued 2012 as they finished the season 8-22, and 7-9 in the Conference Carolinas standings. The Cobras did, however, manage a season sweep of conference rival Mount Olive. The biggest win of the season came on the final night of the regular season as the Cobras beat Converse College 3-2 to solidify a spot in the Conference Carolinas tournament.

shaking the Drought: The Cobras made the conference tournament for the first time in five years as they finished third in the East Division of the Conference Carolinas standings. They faced the North Green-ville Crusaders in the quarterfinals, and eventually lost in four sets.

three the hard way: Three Cobras earned hardware for their hard work in the classroom and on the court. Juniors Katie McElveen and Mindy Morris both earned Academic All-Conference honors from Conference Carolinas. Senior Brittany Bass was the lone All-Conference honoree; she was a Third Team selection.

star Power: Katie McElveen was plagued with a shoulder injury all season but that didn’t stop her from being a featured NCAA Division II Student-Athlete. You can read McElveen’s story at: http://www.diicom-munity.org/studentAthlete/blog.aspx?post=100.

taking Care of business: The 2012-13 Cobra women’s basketball team led by third year coach Jenny Finora had another successful year as they won 18 games, the highest win total since 2003.

The Cobras opened their season the same way they did last season, with an exhibition matchup against a nationally ranked SEC powerhouse. The opponent this year was the Lady Volunteers of the University Of Tennessee.

The Cobras took the experience gained from Tennessee and turned it into two early season victories against future SAC opponents Carson-Newman College and Lincoln Memorial University in the SAC-Conference Carolinas Challenge. The Cobras closed out their historic season with a six game winning streak, which secured the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.

tourney time: By securing the No. 4 seed the Cobras hosted a home playoff game for the first time since 2009.

hard work earns hardware: Many Cobras saw recognition from their play during the season. Twin sisters Amber and Autumn Lau were both named All-Conference by Conference Carolinas. For Amber it was her second consecutive All-Conference nod, this time as a Third Team selection. Autumn was named First Team, and along with that honor was named Second Team All-Southeast Region by Daktronics.

Amber and Autumn, along with sophomore Hailey Yohn were all named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week during the season.

The Cobras also had two Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference selections in juniors Hannah Kuhn, and Kenley Perry.

weathering the storm: The 2012-13 Cobras men’s basketball team led by longtime coach Dan Schmotzer endured a season of ups and downs. The Cobras finished the season with 13 wins, none bigger than a thrilling 3OT marathon against nationally ranked Barton College at home. The Cobras also saw the record books rewritten as senior Andrew Morris connected on a school record 11 3-pointers in an early season win against local rival Francis Marion University.

the tradition Continues: The Cobras continued their postseason tradition by advancing to the Conference Carolinas tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Cobras ended their season with a loss to Barton College in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

filling space in the trophy Case: The Cobras were well represented in the award department this season. Junior Julian Nelson was named Second Team All-Conference by Conference Carolinas. The Cobras had three Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference selections in senior Jonathon Gardner, sophomore Gabriel Mens, and senior Andrew Morris. Along with Morris’ Academic All-Conference selection he was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District and All-American teams.

Pin the Cobra on the map: The Cobras earned some national recognition this season when senior Sharod Williams was selected to the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition. Williams was one of sixteen finalist chosen from all three NCAA divisions and NAIA schools for a chance to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships held in Atlanta, Georgia during the Final Four.

history in the making: The 2013 season was a historic season for the Coker baseball team. The Cobras defied all odds to capture the Conference Carolinas Tournament title, earned the teams first-ever postseason bid, won the NCAA Southeast Regional and advanced to the NCAA DII Baseball National Championship. They finished the year with a record of 38-16, the third best season in school history, and were ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation according to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

season at a glance: The Cobras began the season with a 10-3 record, winning a four-game series with Chowan (3-1) and taking a three-game set from Barton (3-0). The Cobras’ longest winning streak of the season was seven games from Mar. 27 - Apr. 9. They finished the Conference Carolinas portion of their schedule with a 14-9 record, earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Then in the championship game senior Dan Meyer threw a complete game on just two days rest to lead the Cobras to a 7-2 victory over the No. 5 seed Georgia College. The win gave the Cobras their first-ever trip to the NCAA DII Baseball National Championship.

The Cobras drew the nationally ranked No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans in the opening game of the National Finals and lost 12-4. regular season: This year, like years past, the women’s golf team had a very successful season. They finished in the top five in three tournaments and in the top 15 in eight of their nine events. Freshman Taylor Demby was named the conference golfer of the month for April, and she was also a third team all-conference selection.

making history: History was made for the women’s golf program when sophomore Mallory Thompkins recorded the programs first ever hole-in-one. Thompkins connected on a 170 yard par three at the Pirate Invitational on March 5. Thompkins would then go on to finish the round with a score of 85.

Demby goes all-Conference: Freshman Taylor Demby was named third team all-conference after a stellar year. Demby ended the season with an average of 85.1. Her best individual performance came at the Montreat Invitational, where she fired a school-record 75 in the final round and finished third overall. She also tied for ninth place at the Mount Olive Invita-tional with a two-day score of 168. Demby was also named the conference women’s golfer of the month for April.

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish: The Cobras had a breakthrough season at the end as they won their last three games in a row, finishing with a record of 5-10 overall. Included in those victories were wins over future South Atlantic Conference opponents Wingate (18-15) and Lenoir-Rhyne (12-9). Losing only four seniors, the future looks very bright for this young team.

two-time all-Conference for laClair: Sophomore Keith LaClair was named to the All-Conference second team this season. This was the second consecutive year that LeClair has earned the award, as he was named to the third team last year. LaClair is the first two-time all-conference selection in program history. He was fourth in the conference in scoring with 30 goals. He tallied at least one goal in 12 of Coker’s 15 games. He was second on the team with 13 assists, tallying a combined 43 points on the season.

maurer Power: Junior transfer Ryan Maurer may not have received all the accolades that other attackmen did in Conference Carolinas, but he was an offensive power for the Cobras in 2013. Standing in at just five feet-six inches tall, Maurer is not a big guy, but he presence was definitely known. The offensive leader for Coker, he recorded 56 points with 27 goals and 29 assists. In the Cobras final three games of the year, Maurer scored 11 goals, had 12 assists and picked up 16 ground balls.

we’re goin’ streakin’!: The Cobras had an impressive regular season posting a record of 24-16 and 12-8 in conference play. What was even more impressive, however, was their 17-9 record at home. Coker started off the month of March on an eight game win streak to help spark 16 wins within a span of 25 days.

Down goes frazier!: The postseason was highlighted by a heavy weight battle between the No. 1 seed King Tornado and the No. 5 seed Cobras. Coker took down the favorites 1-0 after a 12-inning battle, where freshman Breanna Skipper recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts. Coker would then go on to finish the season with an overall record of 26-18.

all-Conference awards: Senior and junior outfielders Sarah Rountree and Sydney Weatherford both earned all-conference honors this year for the Cobras. Rountree was selected to the first team, while Weatherford was added to the second team.

Rountree led the team in batting average (.358), hits (48), runs (24), and on base percentage (.403). She also had the least amount of strikeouts, with only three on the year.

Weatherford was just as impressive leading the team with 37 RBIs, which was third overall in the conference. She also led the team with six homeruns, including two grand slams. On the year she hit .305 with a team high slugging percentage of .525.

saC vision statement“The South Atlantic Conference aspires to be the premier NCAA Division II athletic conference in the country; a conference where a high priority of each member institution is a balance between athletics and the overall academic, spritual, social and physical development of each student-athlete to provide these individuals with skills for future success.”

historyThe South Atlantic Conference is in its 37th year of athletic tradition and excellence.

The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University.

The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year.

The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference.

The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The SAC will add men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s track and field, and women’s track and field starting in the 2013-14 academic year.

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996.

In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007 and a full member in 2008.

In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner.

In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University became the league’s 10th member.

Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play.

The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

In June 2012, the SAC Presidents Council approved the addition of Coker College and Queens University of Charlotte as the 11th and 12th members of the conference. The schools will officially join the league on July 1, 2013.

wELCOmE TO ThE SACBeginning with the 2013-14 season the Cobras will join the prestigious South Atlantic Conference (SAC). The SAC is comprised of 12 schools from Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Coker, along with Queens University of Charlotte becomes the 11th and 12th schools to join the SAC.
