    Madden is new LEA commanderby SSgt. C. DrakeCol. Charles D. Madden took

    command of the Law EnforcementActivity, 193d Infantry Brigade(Panama) during a change ofcommand ceremony a t 8 a.m.October 15.Madden accepted the MilitaryPolice colors, the symbol of hisassuming responsibility from Lt. Col.Loyal G. Evans. Evans was LEAcommander for three months, fillingthe position left vacant following thedeparture of former commander Col.Donald Whitmarsh.In the position as commander ofLEA, Madden also serves as theProvost Marshal for the U.S. SouthernCommand. As the senior militarypolice official for the U.S. Forces herehe is responsible for co-ordinating allmilitary law enforcement activities ofthe unified command.In remarks to the assembledspectators Madden pledged himself todo his utmost to maintain andimprove on the high standards thatLEA has demonstrated in the past.The new LEA commander hasnearly 500 mili tary police under hiscontrol who provide- communityservices ranging from gate guards tomilitary police liaison with trafficcourts and other host countryagencies.

    Among the most significant unitsare the 534th Military PoliceCompany (STRAF), winners of theU.S. Army Forces Command EagleAward for being the best combatmilitary police company. The 549thMilitary Police Company, based atFort Gulick which provides ArmyLa w Enforcement to Atlanticcommunities and HeadquartersCompany, LEA based at FortClayton.Missions for the military policelocally range from VIP security tofulfilling the combat !l/lP'srole duringtactical field operations.Madden's previous assignment was

    as Deputy Provost Marshal atHeadquarters Training and DoctrineCommand, Fort Monroe, VA.He is a native of Utica, New Yorkwit hover 22 years of activecommissioned service. He graduatedwith a Bachelors degree from NiagaraUniversity and holds a Masters degreein criminology and corrections fromSam Houston State University,Huntsville, Texas.The change of command wasfollowed by a reception in Valent

    Recreation Center.Evans will resume his role asDeputy Commander, LEA.
