Coldplay Are Back With A Sparky, Disco-influenced New Single - Track Review

Other people’s perceptions of you are tricky to shake off. Coldplay have long been burdened with the fact that, fairly or not, their name has been perceived as a synonym for beige. Undoubtedly aware of this, the band have made repeated attempts to evade

pigeonholing, reinventing themselves from album to album for the best part of the past decade.

2008’s ‘Viva La Vida’ saw the quartet don Napoleon-inspired garb and record their own version of Les Miserables, while 2011 follow-up ‘Mylo Xyloto’ was an Orwellian rock opera with added glowsticks thrown in for good measure. Last year’s ‘Ghost Stories’, meanwhile, was the band’s most sombre to date, a Jon Hopkins-aided nightcap to singer Chris Martin’s infamous “conscious uncoupling” from actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

‘Adventure Of A Lifetime’ - the lead track from what’s possibly their final album, ‘A Head Full Of Dreams’ - is a groove-laden disco number that continues that pattern

of reinvention. The contrast with the broody electronica of its predecessor couldn’t be more pronounced. If ‘Ghost Stories’ was Martin’s break-up album, then this new single is the newly-reinvigorated singer realising that the world keeps turning and you have to keep moving with it: “I feel my heart beating / Oh, you make me feel like I’m alive again”.

Bright, sprightly and a dead cert for radiowave ubiquitity, it’s a strong return and very much a timely one, with Mark Ronson, Daft Punk and, latterly, The Weeknd all bringing disco back into the charts in recent years. With ‘Adventure Of A Lifetime’, Coldplay risk being labeled as trend jackers, but you know what, they’ve certainly been called a lot worse.
