THE COLES CONNECTION

Volume 5, Issue 12 December 2011News For the Residents of Coles Crossing

We flew across the pond eight years ago and landed on our feet here in Coles Crossing. After eight wonderful years in the neighborhood, we thought life couldn’t get any better. Until we needed blood that is.

At a routine appointment in March, my husband Mike was told by his doctor he looked pale and was asked to have his blood work checked. Within a week and a biopsy, we had confirmed results of Leukemia.

We were floored by the news but more shocked to find out Mike would be spending a month in a Protective Environment at MD Anderson. Well, why would we be this close to the most reputable hospital on the planet for cancer treatment and research, and not make the 40 minute journey. So we did. The downside however, was who would look after our 7 year old daughter, two Labrador Retrievers and one tropical fish? Our fears were answered by the stream of neighbors with open arms and hearts. We were choked and speechless by all that they did for us. At the end of the month we came home to a procession of yellow ribbons on mail boxes, trees and gates.

Two weeks later I took Mike to MDA with a severe headache. He was diagnosed within days with a Glio Blastoma brain tumor. His MDA doctors were as surprised as we were. The danger of the surgery post chemotherapy drugs and neutropenia blood numbers was high but Mike sailed through it. Meanwhile, our wonderful

neighbors handled everything at home.As soon as Mike recovered, his

Leukemia professor recommended 4-5 more chemotherapy treatments. He described Leukemia like a boxing match. First you knock down your opponent but you don’t wait for him to get back up angry and fierce; you keep knocking him down until he doesn’t rear his ugly head again.

Each time, Mike would require blood and platelet transfusions. One Friday there was a shortage and Mike was asked to come home, be careful all weekend and only come in if there was an emergency for blood transfusion. On the Sunday afternoon he bit his tongue

and that was eventful enough. This was when Shannon Hascall decided to coordinate a blood drive in Mike’s honor. On October 11th, lots of our neighbors turned up to donate blood and it was a great success!

How can life get any better? Cancer-free for one but the experience could have been much worse without this support. We could not be more thankful, grateful and appreciative of our neighbors in Coles Crossing……and especially to Shannon for organizing the blood-drive.

Merry Christmas!

Local Girl Scouts Celebrate Founder’s BirthdayBirthdays were the theme when Girl Scouts from

the Compass Rose Service Unit held a skating party at Champions Rollerworld in Spring in October. The occasion was Girl Scout founder Juliette Low’s birthday. Approximately 250 girls from Sampson, Black and Farney Elementary schools and Goodson and Spillane Middle Schools skated in celebration.

In honor of Low’s memory and in the spirit of scouting, the Girl Scout troops assembled 58 birthday boxes that were donated to Child Protective Services. Birthday boxes contain everything a parent might need to throw a fun birthday party: decorations, cake mixes, candles, paper goods and party favors.

Girl Scouting strives to build girls of courage, confidence and character. The girls of Compass Rose have shown that they are indeed making the world a better place.

Stuffed Animal DriveThe Compass Rose Girl Scout Service Unit is sponsoring a New Stuffed Animal Drive for

the Houston Police Department in November and December at area schools. Information about collection dates will be distributed in the coming weeks.

This third annual drive was a Girl Scout service project initiated by Julia Marie Briggs, who passed away unexpectedly in May, 2009, at the age of 13. Julia was an active athlete at Hamilton Middle School, Captain of the Cy-Fair Iron Maidens Lacrosse Team and a busy Girl Scout.

As a Cadette scout, Julia was working to earn her Silver Award by organizing a service project for the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division. She saw a need to comfort young children who were involved in homicide cases, whether as witnesses or even suspects. Julia arranged a new stuffed animal drive that was to kick off in December 2009. Within days of her passing, her Lacrosse team members and Girl Scout troop members decided that they would finish this project in her honor. With thousands of new stuffed animals collected each year, this worthy project continues today.

Please watch for information from your school about upcoming collection dates. Collections also will be held at Compass Rose Girl Scout events in November and December and at the Cy-Fair Burning Flower Lacrosse Classic tournament, named in Julia’s honor, in early December. Consider donating new stuffed animals in memory of a young woman and her promise and in honor of young children in need.

For more information, contact Vera Briggs at [email protected].

acclaimed teachers and choreographers who served as its co-artistic directors. Today, Ms. Vittum oversees training and programming with an equal eye to serving the needs of the community. Although Mr. Rome is now retired, he maintains his interest and affiliation with HRB, performing as Drosselmeyer in The Nutcracker and as a guest teacher.

It’s All About the Students! (from a volunteer’s view)

It was barely 8:00 in the morning on Friday, Oct.14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme. “Teamwork”.

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety, Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers, Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD.

There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education.

While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students”.

diverse talents, where you are always a “starter”? It’s not too late to join the Volunteer Team in the Cy-Fair Public Schools.

VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a diversity of skills and knowledge in its community.
