Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace)
When writing this arrangement, the question in my mind was, “If we took away all the world noise during Christmastime and only heard the singing from the vantage point of a bird, what would it sound like?” ~ Janine Dexter
Ave MariaThe Ave Maria is the most familiar prayer of the Catholic Church dating back to the early fifth century. The prayer slowly took shape over the passing of a thousand years, taking its current form in 1514. The text is an expression of love. It has been set to a great number of melodies including this peaceful setting that you will hear today.
Sung in Latin, translation as follows:
The angel of God visited MariaAnd she conceived of the Holy Spirit.Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women,And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus…
Do You Hear What I HearNoel Regney, co-writer of the beloved Christmas song Do You Hear What I Hear? died in 2002.
He wrote the seasonal standard with Gloria Shayne, then his wife, in 1962. It was recorded by Bing Crosby and Perry Como, among others, in more than 120 versions, in musical styles ranging from jazz and New Age to funk and reggae.
But Regney wrote it as a clear and plaintive plea for peace at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, in October 1962. His favourite version was Robert Goulet’s. When Goulet came to the line “Pray for peace, people, everywhere,” he almost shouted the words. “I am amazed that people can think they know the song - and not know it is a prayer for peace,” Regney said in an interview in 1985. “But we are
so bombarded by sound and our attention spans are so short that we now listen only to catchy beginnings.”
Regney was born in Strasbourg , France, and studied at conservatories in Strasbourg , Salzburg and Paris. War interrupted his education in classical music.
~ Deathwatch Central (4 December 2002)
… Said the king to the people everywhere“Listen to what I sayPray for peace, people, everywhereThe Child sleeping in the nightHe will bring us goodness and light.”
Amazing Peace (Part 1)
**a U d i e n c e : Please speak the boldface text “Peace”
Thunder rumbles in the mountain passesAnd lightning rattles the eaves of our houses.Flood waters await us in our avenues.
Snow falls upon snow, falls upon snow to avalancheOver unprotected villages. The sky slips low and grey and threatening.Into this climate of fear and apprehension, Christmas enters, Streaming lights of joy, ringing bells of hope And singing carols of forgiveness high up in the bright air. The world is encouraged to come away from rancor, Come the way of friendship.
It is the Glad Season. Hope is born again in the faces of children It rides on the shoulders of our aged as they walk into their sunsets. Hope spreads around the earth. Brightening all things.
Peace. Each of us has different ideas for the meaning of peace. A new mother might say that the image of her sleeping infant would best describe the word; a New Yorker may tell of his early morning run in Central Park; a psychologist might say it is a strong sense of purpose; a child in a war-torn country might imagine it is when they are able to play outside without fear. For many, this season, more than any other, represents peace. We hope that our time together today will bring moments of reflection . . . and moments of peace.

In our joy, we think we hear a whisper. Peace. (spoken in a whisper)At first it is too soft. Then only half heard. Peace. (a louder whisper)We listen carefully as it gathers strength. Peace. We hear a sweetness. The word is Peace. Peace.
Hailed as a global renaissance woman, Maya Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist.
Anthem of PeaceAnthem of Peace is based on an Estonian folk song , “Laulu Võim” (The Power of Song ) and the American Spiritual “We shall Walk Together in the Valley of Peace”. From 1228 until 1991, Estonia had been continuously occupied by foreign powers. Over the course of occupation, the Estonian people developed and maintained the oldest and largest body of folk music in the world. In 1869, the first Estonian music festival was organized and a “Singing Grounds” was established in Tartu. Every five years 10,000 auditioned singers would gather and sing. After WWII, the USSR under Stalin put an end to these festivals, shuttered the Singing Grounds, and any Estonian who was caught singing this folk music would be sent to Siberia as punishment.
In 1987 the youth of Estonia, restless under the oppression, began to gather at the Singing Grounds to simply sing. By June of 1987, over 10,000 people a night were singing. In September 1988, 300,000 people, over 20% of the population, were gathering to sing , protest, wave illegal Estonian flags, and demand independence. Within a year, 2 million people joined hands at the Singing Grounds, extending this human chain over a continuous 375-mile stretch of road into Lithuania and Latvia. Two years later, Estonia was an independent nation. Truly, there is power of song.
When in the morning I begin my singingAll the village listens to my songEvery window opens to receive me Welcoming my voice so clear and strong…
We shall walk together in the valley of peaceWhen all lands walk hand in hand togetherWe shall walk in the valley of peace
As we join with one heart Nations will be a partOf our song heard across land and sea
When we sing with one songLands and people will long For the peace that forever shall be
Shalom Aleikhem (A Sonnet)
Rabbi Lewis John Eron, Ph.D. is presently the Jewish Community Chaplain for the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey in Cherry Hill, NJ. He has been a leader in Jewish-Christian interfaith dialogue on the local, national and international level. In addition to his chaplaincy work, Rabbi Eron writes poetry, children’s stories and is presently at work on a theology of Judaism.
Shalom AleikhemThis prayer is traditionally said on Friday night upon returning from synagogue. The prayer is a plea for peace, but it is not just an ethereal longing. It implies that if we want peace, we must prepare for it first in our own lives. ~ Kurt Knecht
Sung in Hebrew, translation as follows:
Shalom upon you, O ministering angels, angels of the Exalted One — from the King Who reigns over kings, the Holy One, Blessed is He.
May your coming be for shalom, angels of peace… Bless me for shalom, angels of peace… May your departure be to shalom, angels of peace…
Christmas LullabyFor some of us, Christmas is not Christmas without the music of John Rutter…
…Where are his courtiers, and who are his people? Why does he bear neither sceptre nor crown?Shepherds his courtiers, the poor for his peopleWith peace as his sceptre and love for his crown…
Behold the StarThe original jubilee carol, Behold That Star, was written by Thomas Talley in the first half of the 20th Century. Talley was the chair of the chemistry department at Fisk University from 1917-1942. Around the age of 50, Fisk began collecting rural black traditional songs, especially from Tennessee. He eventually published two major works on this genre and composed several pieces including Behold That Star.
Behold the star! Behold the star up yonder,It is the star of Bethlehem.

Lo How a Rose / The RoseIn his compositions and in his programming , Craig Hella Johnson, founder and artistic director of the professional company of singers, Conspirare, carefully and seamlessly interweaves popular songs, classical repertoire, and new commissions in a thought-provoking and moving musical journey to try to bring meaning , connection and relevance to the music.
See Dat Babe (Christmas Spiritual)
See dat Babe in de lowly manguh, He gon’ take all my sin away.He gon’ reign wit my God in glory one of dese days.He was born of de Virgin Mary to bring peace to a weary lan’.He come down from de God in heaben, oh, behol’ de Son of Man.
Ma Navu (Jewish Folk Song)
Sung in Hebrew, translation as follows:
How beautiful are upon the mountains the feet of the messenger of good tidings; of salvation and peace
Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King…Born this night, the Son of Mary.Hail the heav’n born Prince of peace.Glory, glory, glory to the new-born King.
Behold, EmmanuelComposer, Brian Steckler is a recording producer, songwriter and musician who relocated from LA to Meadow Vista in search of a more wholesome environment for his family. His credits are long and impressive (www.thestickhouse.com) but for me, his integrity, musicianship, and dry humor are the attraction. He recorded, mixed and mastered our first CD, “A Colla Voce Christmas” and his own solo CD, “Christmas With Hensley” was released in November. He wrote “Behold, Emmanuel” especially for Colla Voce’s ‘Songs of Peace’ concert. ~ Janine Dexter

The word is Peace. We tremble at the sound. We are thrilled by its presence. It is what we have hungered for. Not just the absence of war. But, true Peace. A harmony of spirit, a comfort of courtesies.
We clap hands and welcome the Peace of Christmas. We beckon this good season to wait a while with us. We, Baptist and Buddhist, Methodist and Muslim, say come. Peace. Peace.
Come and fill us and our world with your majesty. We, the Jew and the Jainist, the Catholic and the Confucian, implore you to stay awhile with us so we may learn by your shimmering light how to look beyond complexion and see community.

It is Christmas time.At this Holy Instant, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus ChristInto the great religions of the world. All the earth’s tribes loosen their voices to celebrate the promise of Peace. Peace.
We, Angels and Mortals, Believers and Nonbelievers, Look heavenward and speak the word aloud. Peace. Peace.
We look at our world and speak the word aloud. Peace. Peace.
We look at each other, then into ourselves, And we say without shyness or apology or hesitation:
Peace, My Brother. Peace, My Sister. Peace, My Soul ~ Maya Angelou (excerpted from Amazing Peace)

Sung in Swedish, translation as follows:
Christmas, Christmas, shining Christmas, light above white forests. The crowns of heaven with glittering lights.Glowing bows in the houses of God.Hymn that is sung from time to time.Eternal desire of light and peace.

The Little Drummer Boy /Peace on EarthWhile Bing Crosby was in London in 1977, he expressed interest in having a young star on his yearly special. Someone suggested David Bowie and after conferring with his children, Crosby extended an invitation to Bowie. Bing Crosby and David Bowie performed this song together on September 11, 1977 filming Crosby’s 42nd annual Christmas Special. It aired in late November of that year, but Crosby died October 14th, and didn’t see the segment air or witness the country’s reaction to it.
Peace on Earth, can it be?Years from now, perhaps we’ll seeSee the day of glorySee the day, when men of good willLive in peace, live in peace againPeace on Earth, can it be?
Every child must be made awareEvery child must be made to careCare enough for his fellow manTo give all the love that he can
I pray my wish will come trueFor my child and your child tooHe’ll see the day of glorySee the day when men of good willLive in peace, live in peace again
Peace on Earth, can it beCan it be?
