2016 ANNUAL REPORT

C O L L A B O R A T I N G F O R T O M O R R O W

The theme for the College of Southern Idaho Foundation this year is Collaborating for Tomorrow. It’s hard to imagine a turn of phrase that more accurately represents what the CSI Foundation does in making connections with generous philanthropists like you and the students the college serves.

As I have written before, citizens near and far recognize CSI changes lives. In fostering collaboration between donors and the work of the College, the CSI Foundation maximizes the transformative power of education. It only works because your generosity and intention changes lives, and many of our students are able to go to school as a result of your commitment.

Collaborating for tomorrow is not just a financial assistance; it sends a clear message of support, student by student, that you believe in the transformative power of education, that you believe in each of them. You are changing lives, and these changed lives will remember this gift, and in turn, I hope they will do the same for future students.

Thank you for your tangible advocacy and belief in education. Thank you for your trust in the College of Southern Idaho Foundation and for collaborating for tomorrow.

Best Regards,

Jeff Fox, CSI President

“Collaborating for Tomorrow” is the theme of this year’s CSI Foundation, Inc. Annual Report.

Since its inception in 1984, the CSI Foundation has been the recipient of the generosity of community members who share the vision of providing affordable college opportunities to everyone who desires to obtain education, improve skills, and perfect abilities.

“Collaboration” is at the heart of everything the College of Southern Idaho and the CSI Foundation does to make educational dreams reality.

CSI collaborates with area high schools, local business leaders, and Idaho universities. It provides dual-credit opportunities to high school students which paves the way to higher education. This year 2,444 high school students are enrolled at CSI under the dual-credit program. It customizes training and certification programs to meet the needs of growing businesses. Nearly 20% of CSI students seek certification required to meet job/promotional opportunities. And it ensures seamless and efficient transitions to a 4-year degree, and beyond. 80% of CSI students are enrolled in transfer programs to continue their education beyond CSI. This fall, 2 out of 11 CSI students are recipients of scholarships from the CSI Foundation. Theses scholarships help students realize their educational goals.

With the unemployment rate in the Magic Valley at 3.2%, CSI, the CSI Foundation, and local industry partners are finding it necessary to collaborate together in order to provide ways to attract students and potential talent to the area. Attracting people to CSI who would not normally attend college as well as people who do not live in this area can be made possible through creative scholarship incentives. On top of attracting new students and talent, providing needed workforce training along with new apprenticeship programs can be achieved through hard work and collaboration between CSI and its community partners.

On behalf of the College of Southern Idaho Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to say “thank you” to you, the current and past supporters of the Foundation. You make it possible for CSI to offer affordable educational opportunities. Through your generosity, you help make the CSI Foundation part of the “Magic” of the Magic Valley.

Sincerely,

Mike Traveller, CSI Foundation President

Thank you to the generous donors who are helping make education affordable for CSI students! The Bridge to Success Summer Bridge Program prepared first-time, degree-seeking students for the academic rigors and expectations of college. “Bridgers” took seven credits of coursework and participated in two, hour-long math labs over the course of eight weeks. During lunch, they were introduced to valuable campus resources and student success strategies. On Thursday mornings, they partook in a two-hour community engaged learning session where they developed essential 21st century skills in leadership, teamwork, and communication.

Were they successful? Absolutely! Twenty-seven of 29 students (93%) completed the program. How did they perform in Math 043 compared to non-bridge 043 students? Slightly better. Nineteen of 27 students (70%) earned a grade of C or higher. Are they enrolled in the fall semester? They are! Twenty-five of 27 students (93%) are enrolled in courses this fall; seventeen of 25 (68%) are full-time students, and 18 of 25 (72%) are enrolled in a college-level math class. The success of the summer bridge program is far greater than what the statistics indicate. We provided access and opportunity for students who thought college was a mere pipe dream. They developed confidence, relationships, and essential tools to navigate college and beyond.

This summer was an amazing experience. I can’t say enough about the talents, dedication, and commitment of the core team—they rock! But, as we know, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” Similarly, it takes a whole college community to help a student be successful. Bridge was successful because of the contributions and skills of many employees, the support and confidence of our administration, and the financial support and trust of the Foundation. Thank you!

Getting a college degree is extremely important for everyone, but sadly it is not always feasible because it is expensive. The scholarships I have been awarded from the CSI Foundation have given me the opportunity to stay focused on my studies and not worry as much about how I can pay tuition. I am very thankful and lucky to be attending a college where there are countless opportunities for success.

They say “many hands make light work” and that has been the case with the Idaho Falls Outreach Center. Many hands have helped us grow along the way, including faculty, students, the people of Idaho Falls and surrounding communities, Eastern Idaho Technical College, and more. With many hands, our work doesn’t feel like “work”. It has been a pleasure to be the Director of the Idaho Falls Outreach Center and be a part of such growth!

The work that is being done at the Idaho Falls Outreach Center is laying a foundation for success in the future. Our doors opened in the fall of 2014 with minimal students. Now, only two years later, our numbers have tripled. It has been a rewarding experience to help our students overcome their fears, register them for classes, assist them throughout the

semester, and watch them grow in their knowledge and accomplish their goals. I have seen some move on to find jobs while others transfer to universities to seek higher education.

As we continue to grow and improve, I know that people will come along side us to support such a great community college in Idaho Falls.

Josh Sakelaris Director, Idaho Falls Center

The CSI Blaine County Center is an access point to higher education and lifelong learning for all members of our Wood River Valley community. Located in Hailey, we are a central location for students of all ages from Carey to Sun Valley and beyond. At the Blaine County Center, we understand that members of our highly diverse community have different needs. We strive to meet the needs of our diverse community by building partnerships with local non-profit organizations, businesses, local and state government, and schools. These partnerships helps us connect students with essential support services like food, shelter, and mental health services, but also connect us to K-12 education, economic development and employment opportunities, and local recreation activities.

We collaborate with local faculty and faculty on the Twin Falls campus to deliver a wide range of courses locally including: credit bearing college classes and dual credit classes for high school students, workforce development opportunities such as apprenticeship programs and Certified Nursing Assistant classes, adult basic education and college readiness programs, English Language Acquisition classes, adult enrichment, and active ageing programs for seniors. Many of our students are unable to afford college without the generous support of scholarship donors the CSI Foundation. When we are able to provide students with scholarships, we do more than help a single student. We help our community grow and proper by investing in our own. Being able to meet our students where they are, when they need us, is why we are successfully serving our community. However, we would not be able to do this without the help of partnerships and collaborations. Together, we can do amazing things.

blaine Ce nter nor th side Ce nterAmong the things we’re proud of at CSI - our affordability, accessibility, and educational quality - we also take pride in being the hometown college. That goes for those of us in Gooding County, too. My staff and I are often the first stop for traditional students starting their academic journeys. Sometimes, we’re also the lifeline for older students who are now ready to begin their higher education quest but whose family and career obligations and commitments keep them close to home. We appreciate being the faces of the College of Southern Idaho right here in our own community. We get opportunities to make a difference for students each day. Our thanks to the CSI Foundation for collaborating with us to change lives.

Mini-Cassia Ce nterThe most important part of the term, “Community”, is “–Unity.” Over the past several years, we have enjoyed great partnerships that have benefitted the students at the Mini-Cassia Center. We work hard to provide opportunities for students to volunteer, interact, and learn from a variety of collaborations within the Mini-Cassia community. Our students reflect these communities in diverse ways, including age, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and especially in the way they access higher education. The faculty and staff at our Center are

first and foremost advocates for our students so they can access the education they need. We provide the full spectrum of services, ranging from community education enrichment classes, all the way to popular Active Aging programs. We meet students where they are, and we appreciate the efforts of dual credit and transition coordinator staff that focus on the high school students participating in Dual Credit programs. We partner with the CSI Career and College Readiness department as they provide both English Language and Adult Basic Education which are free for all who participate. We have dedicated instructors, almost all serving in an adjunct capacity, who are dedicated professionals. We are unified in our efforts to be a model of excellence and acceptance so that we serve our communities and support our family, friends, and neighbors who are committed to become someone greater.

Students in the CSI Business Management and Entrepreneurship program are partnering with the college Public Information office, Student Services, Institutional Technology, and Maintenance Department to develop and implement a QR code-based tour of the main CSI campus. This project was made possible through a $3,000 mini-grant received from the CSI Foundation. The QR Tour will launch spring 2017.

Signs and labels will be on display around the college and the codes will give people access to maps of the campus as well as information and history of various campus sites.

“Opening Doors to Success” was the theme of the 19th Annual CSI Foundation Black and Gold Ball that was held on April 9th at Canyon Crest Dining and Event Center. The Foundation premiered their “Thank You” video featuring CSI students whose lives have been changed due to scholarships that have helped lead them on their way to success. Guests dined on a delicious meal of trout and pork tenderloin donated by Clear Springs Foods and Falls Brand/Independent Meat. Proceeds from this annual event are used to support scholarships for CSI students.

What isn’t there to love about CSI here in Hailey? Most of my teachers are locals here in the Valley and can guarantee you can find them hiking along our many trails or skiing down the slopes in Ketchum and can stop to ask them about your homework or what to expect in class! My point being this, I feel like having teachers who are willing to talk to you about class when they aren’t in the classroom makes me feel they really want us to be successful! Same goes to the office staff here at CSI. They will see you in town and be happy to ask you how things are going and if you need anything they never fail to say, “if you need anything or have other questions give us a call or stop by the office and we can talk.” Becky, Sarah & Hallie are amazing individuals! I’m also lucky enough to have received a scholarship with the help of CSI & St. Luke’s! They have put me back on track to become a Practical Nurse.

This short article can’t express how much I appreciate everyone that has helped me. On behalf of all the other students here in the Valley, a BIG THANK YOU!

My name is Lidia Calidonio and I’m a first generation student in my family. I was born and raised in Honduras along with my two sisters and my loving parents. When we moved to Idaho, continuing my education was my priority and when I made the decision to attend CSI I was unsure of what my journey would be like.

Because of the help the CSI Foundation has given me, I’m graduating with an Associates in Applied Science degree in Business Management and Entrepreneurship. They have supported me in the first part of my educational journey and I couldn’t be more proud to be part of CSI and more honored to be a recipient of the scholarship the CSI Foundation grants.

My name is Samantha Cavin, this is my third year here at CSI. I graduated in the spring of 2016 with a degree in Anthropology but came back to finish my Associates in Secondary Education. I wish to become a professor in Anthropology at a University or Community College, after I’ve had a successful career in Cultural Anthropology. Before I came to CSI, I was a high school drop-out. My circumstance in high school did not allow me to continue, so I wound up dropping out in November of my senior year. Shortly after I left high school I became pregnant with my first child and I didn’t think college was ever going to be possible. A good friend brought me to CSI and made me sign up for classes, and at first I really struggled, but I found the CSI Foundation’s Scholarship Applications for Child Care and that has exponentially helped me in my college career.

Upon receiving my scholarship from the Foundation my grades immediately improved because I was no longer as focused on working and how I was going to pay for child care, and put all my effort into my school work and my child. This scholarship has allowed me to focus on my

schooling and my little girl, and that has helped me so much! Because of this scholarship I am also able to participate within the school, and am now the ASCSI Student President. The Foundation has taught me that I can have the resources available to finish and succeed in school, even with a child if I work hard enough. It has certainly taught me that I can achieve anything I put my mind to.

During the summer of 2016, the College of Southern Idaho was one of nine sites to hold a “Zero Robotics” Summer Spheres Program. This exciting, project-based STEM curriculum program created for middle school students, was coordinated by Idaho AfterSchool Network in partnership with MIT and NASA. At the CSI site, 28 Magic Valley Middle School students participated under the direction of RD Van Noy, CSI Assistant Professor, Information Technology.

Zero Robotics is a computer programming competition for middle school students to learn to control satellites aboard the International Space Station. The curriculum provides students with hands-on robotics and coding experience. Students at the CSI site also were able to tour and interact with faculty and students at CSI’s Manufacturing Tech program, Woodworking program, and Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, UT. Boise State University, in partnership with Discover Technology, helped bring the program to Idaho three years ago through the co-leadership of Barbara Morgan, former NASA Astronaut and Distinguished Educator in Residence at Boise State university, Lorna Finman, founder and president of Discover Technology and owner of LCF Enterprises.

My experience at the College of Southern Idaho North Side Center was wonderful! I am a non-traditional student, who, due to serious health situations, needed to change careers. CSI helped me choose a career that fit me perfectly—social work. The convenience of taking classes five minutes from my home allowed me to attend school without missing a lot of time away from my family.

I appreciated the small class sizes and the instructors who went above and beyond to make sure I succeeded. I graduated from CSI in 2015, and I am now majoring in social work at Idaho State University. The degree I earned at CSI transferred smoothly into the ISU Bachelor of Social Work Program. I will graduate from ISU this December. CSI was the stepping-stone that got me started in my career. Thank you CSI!

Sherri BasterrecheaCSI North Side Center

The mission of the College of Southern Idaho Workforce Development Center is to create workforce training solutions and link individuals, businesses, and industries with human resources development training programs that sustain and grow Southern Idaho’s regional talent infrastructure.

The Center offers apprenticeship programs; workforce programs and industry trainings; human resource and leadership trainings; as well as customized training programs. It is dedicated to offer training and development activities that support regional business startup, expansion, and retention.

The Center has seen tremendous growth over the past year as they have doubled the number of students seeking specified training and general degrees in their area. They have also continued to expand on-site and on-demand training for industries in our area.

My job as director of the CSI North Side Center for the past 30 years has given me daily contact with students in every kind of situation you can imagine. The common denominator for almost all of them is a desire to move ahead, somehow, no matter what obstacles they face. I can’t count the number of times the Foundation has come through for these students. Sometimes all they need is help with some books. Sometimes, they need a lot more. Dan and I know that every time we give to the Foundation, we are part of a generous, caring group of people who want to keep making a difference for these students. We are proud to be a part of this effort, and we urge others to join us in making sure future generations of students can achieve their dreams.

Elaine and Dan Bryant

eMPloYee givingMy name is Maria, I am from Burley and my major is business. I love the CSI Mini-Cassia Center. Teachers, tutors, and advisors make me feel welcomed. They are a constant reminder that sometimes you need help to reach your full potential. Without scholarship donors students like me would not be able to reach their full potential and dreams. I am so grateful to be able to attend the Mini-Cassia campus through the generosity of donors. Without scholarships I would not be able to financially achieve my goals. I am grateful for the generosity of all those who have helped me reach my goals.

Trudy Bradshaw was born on April 23rd, 1930 to Troy and Grace Bradshaw in Marble, Arkansas.

Trudy lived her life in Hagerman, Idaho. She continually challenged herself and had a strong work ethic. She made her career in Banking and worked her way up to a Vice-President position when she retired.

Trudy was a life-long learner with an extensive library. She quite often could be found reading 2 or 3 books at a time even until her death at age 83.

Her Dream was to help the people in her community achieve their goals and to shape their future for success, especially in the Health Care Field. She believed education was an investment in your future and the future of our country.

There is nothing that would give Trudy greater joy, than for scholarship recipients to reach their highest potential with her gift and to succeed in her memory.
