Field of Study: In general, our subject area is Science. However it is quite broad area as there is a number of ways how to explore that through collaboration between scientist / engineer and designer / artist. So through discussing shared interests we come to conclusion of exploring a phenomenon called wave-particle duality within the light. Wave-particle duality is the modern theory that explains the nature of light, described by Albert Einstein in the early 1900s, based on his study of the photoelectric effect and Planck's results. More generally, the theory states that everything has both a particle nature and a wave nature, and various experiments can be done to bring out one or the other but never both. This idea that something can be one thing and then another but never one is mesmeris- ing to us. Thus we will explore the use of light duality within the science and art. The themes we are looking at are: light, duality, numbers, nothingness, interference, timeless, untouchable, paradox reality, conceptual art, video mapping, holograms, prisms, coherent light aka lasers, modern digital technology, photography experiments, unusual techniques. Design Focus: Whether it is possible to create an object which imitates notion of duality of light nature? Is there an object which is actually real and unreal at the same moment? Context: The relationship between arts and science within 20th and 21st centuries is quite common. These two areas are now bounded with each other to such extend that it is sometimes hard to see a clear distinction between them. Finding new possible relation- ships or re-discovering those sounds amusing. Especially when the idea of duality is even quite philosophical one, one that could be seen in lots of artist work. In late Avant Garde video art, conceptual architecture and computer arts. Rationale: Well to be honest tried to combine science and art/design in my previous projects. Even though most of them were successful I am constantly drawn back to this area – science as I found it rather fascinating and I see it as a continuing source of inspiration for me. And also I am constantly are interested in artistic work in which art and science are combined such as works of Daniel Rozin, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Carsten Nicolai, Karsten Schmidt, Aaron Koblin, Sachiko Kodama and many more. I believe that the collaboration with an actual science person would create and atmos- phere for me to create a unique Graphic Design & New Media artefact and open some new areas that even future students could explore and use more. Methods: While making the artefact we will conduct several scientific experiments and document them into film evidence of them. So as for now we will need to use lasers, filming cameras, sculpture while we will be making 3d object and its light hologram. Skills Evidence: We will need to look through the scientific theories behind the duality of light. For instance, at interference patterns, diffraction, quantum physics, wave theory. As well as deep knowledge of conceptual art and other science and art collaborations. Predicted Resolution: As for now we are planning to produce an outcome within the medium of hologram, while at the same time documenting the process and making it into some small docu- mentary. Also I think what I would like to create an typeface which will contain the features of being in the form of real optical illusions and then transferring them into the holographic medium. Field of Study:In general, our subject area is Science.

This idea that something can be one thing and then another but never one is mesmeris-ing to us.

Design Focus:Whether it is possible to create an object which imitates notion of duality of light nature? Is there an object which is actually real and unreal at the same moment?

Context:The relationship between arts and science within 20th and 21st centuries is quite common. These two areas are now bounded with each other to such extend that it is sometimes hard to see a clear distinction between them. Finding new possible relation-ships or re-discovering those sounds amusing. Especially when the idea of duality is even quite philosophical one, one that could be seen in lots of artist work. In late Avant Garde video art, conceptual architecture and computer arts.

Rationale:Well to be honest tried to combine science and art/design in my previous projects.

I believe that the collaboration with an actual science person would create and atmos-phere for me to create a unique Graphic Design & New Media artefact and open some new areas that even future students could explore and use more.

Methods:While making the artefact we will conduct several scientific experiments and document them into film evidence of them. So as for now we will need to use lasers, filming cameras, sculpture while we will be making 3d object and its light hologram.

Skills Evidence:We will need to look through the scientific theories behind the duality of light. For instance, at interference patterns, diffraction, quantum physics, wave theory. As well as deep knowledge of conceptual art and other science and art collaborations.

Predicted Resolution:As for now we are planning to produce an outcome within the medium of hologram, while at the same time documenting the process and making it into some small docu-mentary. Also I think what I would like to create an typeface which will contain the features of being in the form of real optical illusions and then transferring them into the holographic medium.

Despite vast amounts of scientific research about holograms our idea was also based or I might say inspired by few artists. Probably UVA (United Visual Artists) was one of the first artist groups that we looked at due to their use of light as a medium to transfer information to the audience. Their used light bulbs accumulate to produce an interesting light show and light experience.

Also we were inspired by Daniel Rozin and his interactive works especially how accumulation of simple moving objects (wood, glass, metal) can produce the illusion of the image for the audience. This feeling is also one of the points that we hoped our work could achieve.

My CollaboratorFor this collaboration project I am collaborating with my childhood friend Lukas Bielskis. I chose him for quite a few reasons but mostly because he is studying Mechanical Engineering at Harvard University, thus he is pretty good at what he does. However, the problem was that most of the collaborating time was spend speaking through skype and we had just several days of actual hands on experimenting.

Lukas’ Thoughts Before the ExperimentProbably the most exciting aspect about holograms is the complexity of their scientific nature. Current scientific explanations place light somewhere in between the realm of particles and the theory of waves making it one of the most intangible and unpicturable concepts of the physical nature. Thus the most exciting part of the experiment that we are about to do is perhaps our absolute inability to imagine how everything is (or is not) going to work out. Every step, whether it is preparing the chemicals, shutting ourselves off in a sound and light proof area that essentially represents our holographic camera and setting up the laser of bright polarized red light brings into the experiment a great deal of mysteriousness and even science fiction: something that is too hard to grasp with out minds is soon going to be visible to see.

The ExperimentDuring the experiment we had several very interesting ideas of how we can represent our general idea. However, while experimenting we noticed that most of these ideas although possible to create, we will be able to make... So we continued to experiment and briefly to explore this medium of holograms and its possibilities...

The biggest problem that we think prevented us from creating our idea was the fact that the laser should be very steady while exposing the film. In our case we were making this experiment in the basement of block building within a city, thus all the shaking produced by the people living in the block house or the passing cars in the street might have caused the problem.

OutcomeWell the outcome is essentially the experience that I and my friend Lukas have gained but also I created a short video of our experiments, which could be found on the attached CD. Also on the right side there is a hologram attached which was successful, thus the whole project has still potential to be fulfilled. The medium itself although proven to be tricky and difficult actually works and thus could be used by GDNM students and practitioners in order to create new forms of art.

Lukas’ Thoughts After ExperimentAlthough the results did not bring us nearly to those “in-your-face” holograms one might see in Star Wars, they brought us somewhere and gave us a number of images that appeared on film. An experiment that we both prepared for and dealt with for the first time produced some visible result which is, although small, some kind of triumph against the complexity and incomprehensibility of the dual nature of light. We managed to use the materials we had to use the two seemingly opposite views towards light that are both, although seemingly unjuxtaposable, extremely necessary for the production of holographic images. Therefore, to some degree throughout this experi-ment we essentially created something tangible out of something defined solely by a complex concept which is probably the most exciting idea of our project.
