this year’s theme “Collaboration and Partnerships in Mental Health Nursing” reflects the changing practice domain and the importance of partnerships to the profession. the theme will provide opportunity for speakers to address a wide range of mental health issues, ensuring the program is diverse and engaging.

KeYnote sPeaKeRs

Professor Pat Dudgeon – Mental Health CommissionerPat Dudgeon is acknowledged as Australia’s first indigenous Psychologist. from the Bardi people of the Kimberley, Pat is known for her passionate work in psychology and indigenous issues and her leadership in indigenous higher education. Pat is the Chair of Australian indigenous Psychologists Association (AiPA), a member of the indigenous strategies Working group, a research fellow and Associate Professor at the university

of Western Australia and a member of the Mental Health expert Working group. Pat was the first convener of the Australian Psychological society interest group: Aboriginal issues, Aboriginal People and Psychology. in 2008 she was the first Aboriginal psychologist to be awarded the grade of fellow in the Australian Psychological society. throughout her career she has been instrumental in convening many conferences and discussion groups at national levels to ensure that indigenous issues are part of the agenda in the discipline.

Pastor Keith Carmody – WA Police ChaplainKeith Carmody is one of two full-time chaplains with the Western Australia Police and has over 31 years of pastoral experience. in the 15 years of service with WA Police he has attended numerous critical incidents and tragic events requiring his experience and expertise. Keith also has a strong interest in Aboriginal youth and is currently working on a project that is developing an indigenous placement program and partnership

between the Afl and the WA Police.

Lt Col Cate McGregor – Author, journalist, thinker & political strategistCatherine Mcgregor is a graduate of the royal Military College Duntroon, which she entered in 1974 as male named Malcolm Mcgregor. After graduation she filled a number of regimental appointments as an infantry officer - commanding a rifle platoon and the Machine gun Platoon in the 8th/9th Battalion the royal Australian regiment and serving as an instructor at the Jungle training Centre Canungra. she commanded the

Australian Army training team iand served as the political adviser and translator for the Commander of Australian forces in east timor. she has filled staff appointments as the Deputy Director of strategy at Army Headquarters, and has been the speech writer to the Chiefs of the Army since 2001.

for a number of years Cate was a civilian during which time she worked in politics and the media. she was the Chief of staff to the Honourable Bob Carr and also served as a speech-writer to the Honourable Kim Beazley.

Cate commenced gender transition in June 2012 and since the 8th of July 2012 has been known as Catherine (Cate) Mcgregor. in 1985 she published a biography of Paul Mclean and in 2012 she released indian summer-reflections on Australia’s summer game. she was Awarded the order of Australia in the Military Division for exceptional service to the Australian Army on Australia Day 2012.

Professor Dawn Freshwater – Professor of Mental Health & Pro-Vice Chancellor University of Leeds

Dawn freshwater is Professor of Mental Health and Pro-Vice Chancellor for staff and organisational effectiveness at the university of leeds. she is the elected representative for Nursing in england on the Council of Deans for Nursing and Midwifery and trustee of the florence Nightingale foundation.

As a fellow of the royal College of Nursing and a health professional and academic of some 30 years experience, she has

developed a portfolio of research that spans issues of workforce strategy and practice development, leadership in organisational effectiveness and change. Her mental health expertise means that she is currently leading on a number of research grants totalling £2,350M in grant income, related to offender health and psychological therapies, has supervised 15 PhD students to completion, has 15 text books and over 50 academic papers in press. she is the editor of the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing and has recently been appointed to the Journal of Mixed Methods research. Professor freshwater has been recognised as a fellow of the royal College of Nursing for her contribution to Nursing.

Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane – Chair of Nursing (Mental Health) Flinders University

eimear Muir-Cochrane is Chair of Nursing (Mental Health) at flinders university with adjunct professorial positions at City university london and the university of south Australia and a fellow of ACMHN. eimear is the Chair of Academic senate at flinders university (a nomination of the Vice Chancellor) and an expert member on the registered Nurse Accreditation Committee for ANMAC and the Mental Health Professional

online Development national project. As a clinician and academic eimear has been involved in teaching and research since 1983 with her first publication

in the Nursing Mirror (uK) in 1984 about the nurse as a change agent. Her career has focussed on investigating nursing practice in relation to working with people with mental health problems, in acute and community settings and across the life span. eimear has 10 completed PhD students, examined 14 theses, published over 70 refereed journal articles and attracted over $1million dollars in research income to date and several state and national research and teaching awards. in particular, her research about seclusion and restraint has facilitated policy change regarding nursing practice and increased focus on the nature of the experience of being in a psychiatric ward. educational interests have seen the development of teaching materials in virtual reality in blended learning environments, the second edition publication of Mosby’s Pocket Book of Mental Health (2014) and the development of an interactive app in mental health (2014). eimear is also currently writing a pilot MooC as part of a university initiative.

Dr Frances Hughes – Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officer QHealth

frances Hughes commenced in the role of Chief Nursing and Midwifery officer for the Queensland Department of Health in March 2012. she has extensive knowledge and networks in relation to health policy particularly in the field of nursing and mental health, research, and global health issues.

for 8 years, frances held the position as the Chief Nurse for New Zealand. frances was instrumental in the development of

government policy around nurse prescribing, primary health care, health line and rural schemes, mental health and nurse practitioners. frances was the first nurse to be awarded the Harkness fellowship in Health Care Policy from the Commonwealth fund in New York. in 2004 frances was appointed as the first Professor of Nursing at Auckland university, Chair of Mental Health Nursing and established the centre for mental health policy, research and service development. from 2005 through to 2011 frances worked for World Health organisation (WHo) as the facilitator for the Pacific island Mental Health Network (PiMHNet).

frances is an established scholar and has extensive publication record, publishing her first book in 2007 “Have your say – how to influence public policy”. Her scholarship and research interests are Mental Health, Health Policy and Nursing. frances was awarded the New Zealand order of Merit in 2005 for her services to Mental Health. in 2011, frances received a fulbright senior scholarship followed by a Distinguished Alumni service Award from Massey university in New Zealand in 2013.

Master Class 1: Clinical Supervision & Resistance - Dawn Freshwatermonday 21st october 2013 8am-11am

this Clinical supervision Masterclass will focus on working with resistance. Case studies will be used to illustrate examples of working with resistance to change and participants should come prepared with their own reflections and willingness to work with experiences to illuminate imaginative solutions and break throughs.

Master Class 2: How to conduct great interviews and focus groups for qualitative research - Eimear Muir-Cochranemonday 21st october 2013 8am-11am

this masterclass will explore the pitfalls and enablers of undertaking qualitative interviews and focus groups. the first part of the workshop will explore the principles of organising interviews, writing good questions and effective interviewing techniques. An overview of

data analysis techniques will also be provided. the second half of the workshop will be very hands on with participants working with real cases from completed research as well as examples of interview transcripts to establish research skills and confidence.

Workshop 1: Psychosocial Interventions – Nikki Perry and Deborah Nelson monday 21st october 2013 Part a: 8am-11am Part B: 12:30-3:30pm

this workshop will explore some of the principles of Psychosocial interventions (Psi). it will focus on meaningful engagement and therapeutic optimism, looking at how consumers may gain empowerment and responsibility, reinforcing the possibility of

‘whole’ recovery. Participants will have the opportunity to put into practice some effective Psi concepts and techniques, facilitating clients in recognising their strengths, coping mechanisms and utilisation of appropriate strategies. frank discussion will take place regarding staffs attitudes towards consumers as a result of skill acquisition, in terms of trust, involvement and collaboration.

Workshop 2: Engaging with Social Media – Clare Butterfield and Paul McNamara

monday 21st october 2013 12:30-2:30pm

social media allows Collaboration and Partnerships in Mental Health Nursing to transcend time and place: time through collaborative, asynchronous communication; place by being connected to the world’s online clinical communities. this hands-on workshop

aims to act as a launching-pad for those who want to turbo-charge the conference theme.

the workshop will be in two parts: the first, briefest part, will introduce four examples of professional use of social media, using twitter as the primary example. this part of the workshop intends to show participants the value of engaging with social media.

the emphasis will be the second part of the workshop. this will be a hands-on session that will assist participants gain confidence in using twitter. this part of the workshop intends to equip participants with skills in engaging with social media in a professional capacity. Wifi will be available. Participants are asked to bring: -• a mobile internet device (eg: smartphone, tablet or laptop computer);• knowledge (ie: the relevant passwords) on how to download apps onto

your mobile device;• for those who already have an established twitter account, the knowledge

(ie: the relevant passwords) on how to access it;• a spirit of curiosity and fun!to reinforce the learning acquired in the workshop, follow-up “skill checks” will be scheduled during conference breaks on tuesday and Wednesday. Please come along – the workshop facilitators expect it to be a dynamic, fun, enlightening masterclass in engaging with social media.

Masterclass 3: Opening Closets – Sandra Normanmonday 21st october 2013 12:30-3:30pm

gay and lesbian Community services of WA (glCs) are pleased to host a workshop aimed at sharing information and developing skills around working with lesbian, gay, Bisexual, trans* and intersex (lgBti) populations. the workshop will focus on raising awareness of the specific needs of lgBti mental health consumers and developing worker capacity to appropriately respond to clients while promoting inclusive practice. the masterclass will:

• develop understanding of the mental health impacts of homophobia and isolation for lgBti people

• outline ‘best practice’ standards for improving inclusive mental health service provision

• explore the key concepts and models for understanding diverse sexualities, sex and gender

• glCs will also provide resources and can offer follow up support for organisations and staff to develop inclusive policies and practices that best respond to the needs of lgBti people through policy coaching for mental health services.

At any point prior to the event you are welcome to contact us in writing to nominate a substitute delegate at no extra charge. A full refund less a $100 service fee will be issued for cancellations received on or before 21st August 2013. registration cancellation received between 22nd August 2013 and 4th september 2013 will receive a 50% refund on the registration fees.
