Pakistani colleagues in the magnet group• Sumera Yamin (physicist) and Khalid Mansoor Hassan (electrical
engineer) from the National Centre for Physics in Islamabad joined CERN for 12 months, from Feb. 2012 to Jan. 2013.
• They spent most of the time in the TE-MSC-MNC section (Magnet Normal Conducting), with about 55 colleagues (20 staff members and many fellows, associates and students ).

Pakistani colleagues in the magnet groupAfter an initial period of tutoring, Khalid and Sumera carried out several activities in the section. Some samples of their completed works – summarized in internal CERN notes – are listed below.
• Design of compact solenoids for the ALPHA experiment, Sumera Yamin, Khalid Mansoor Hassan, Attilio Milanese, Evgeny Solodko, EDMS 1235913• Thermal analyses of ALPHA solenoid, Khalid Mansoor Hassan, Attilio Milanese,
EDMS 1235914• Electromagnetic design of a wide-range permeameter for detailed measurements
of hysteresis cycles of ferromagnetic sheets, Sumera Yamin, EDMS 1249556• Particle tracking for Orbit Corrector H/V for CTF3, Sumera Yamin, EDMS 1253168• Magnetic modelling of quadrupole for TT10 SPS injection line, Sumera Yamin,
EDMS 1256717• Redesigning of Q74 quadrupole magnet, Khalid Mansoor Hassan, EDMS 1262031• Procedure for measuring hysteresis cycle of ferromagnetic strips using Norma
frame, Sumera Yamin, EDMS 1263697

Three solenoids for the ALPHA experiment• Khalid and Sumera performed the magnetic design of three solenoids for the
ALPHA experiment at CERN. They also participated in the mechanical design, manufacture and certification of the magnets in our workshops.• The three solenoids are now installed as part of the ALPHA-2 experiment, to
transfer particles and antiparticles between various parts of the setup.

The NORMA-Frame• After an original idea of Davide Tommasini, Sumera has designed, followed the
manufacture of and validated a new concept of permeameter.• This instrument is capable of measuring the BH characteristics of steel sheets
following the history of the excitation, to characterize hysteresis cycles as a function of the initial magnetization status of the material.

The Q74 magnet• The main magnets in the East Experimental Area may be upgraded from dc to
pulsed operation, with a × 10 saving on running costs. The yokes of the magnets need to be re-designed and re-manufactured for this energy saving configuration.• Khalid followed a pilot initiative for one of these magnets, the Q74, producing an
updated magnetic design, compatible with the new mechanical assembly.• The manufacture of four quadrants (a complete magnet yoke) in Pakistan with
punched laminations of electrical steel provided by CERN is being discussed with HMC-3, Taxila. A proposal for the stacking tooling and procedure is under review.

• Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science & Applications in the Middle East• It is a cooperative venture set up on the model of CERN. The current members are:
Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestinian Authority, Turkey.
• The electron beam energy is 2.5 GeV, for a nominal emittance of 26.0 nm rad. The ∙storage ring is 133.2 m long, with 16 straight sections, resulting in up to 28 beam lines. Start of the commissioning is expected by end of 2015.

CERN and the SESAME magnetsAn agreement (FP7 CESSAMag) is being signed between CERN and the European Commission, in the framework of cooperation policies with the Mediterranean region. The goal of this CERN-EC project is to support SESAME by providing the storage ring magnetic system and appropriate training to its staff.
This CERN-EC project is complemented by a CERN-SESAME umbrella agreement, signed by the two General Directors.

SESAME sextupoles and Pakistan• We are exploring the possibility of manufacturing 32 sextupoles / correctors (plus
spares) electromagnets in Pakistan (HMC-3, Taxila) for SESAME.• The responsibility for the quality of these magnets will be on CERN.• Some of the components will be provided directly by CERN (for example, punched
steel laminations, insulated hollow conductor and enamelled conductor).• We are organizing the production of a first pre-series magnet in our workshop in
the coming months. Colleagues from Pakistan will visit in June. We shall receive within 10 days a budgetary envelope for this activity.
