Server Virtualization Solution: Collax V-Cube
What is virtualization?
The ability to run encapsulated “computers” on a single physical machine
• The physical machine runs a Hypervisor that lets multiple operating systems run on it concurrently
• Each Guest Machine or Virtual Machine has no idea it is running virtually and works as if it was on its own physical machine
Why virtualization?
Economy of hardware
• Buy one physical machine and run lots of virtual machines on it
Efficiency of hardware
• The average CPU utilisation of a data centre server is between 10 and 15%. In a virtualization server with many virtual machines running on it this can go up to 80%
Economy of energy
• Reduce electrical consumption
• Reduce cooling requirements
Efficiency of internal IT
• The time to rollout/provision a server is greatly reduces from days to minuets
• Simpler management of servers and hardware allocation
Economy of space

Server Virtualization Solution: Collax V-SAN
The Collax V-SAN:
Add-on module to the Collax V-Cube
Shared storage to enable high availability
• All HA solutions require shared storage
• Usually provided by a SAN
• HA SAN devices are usually very expensive
• This expense is eliminated with the Collax V-SAN
No extra hardware requirements
• Collax V-SAN uses disk drives present in the nodes
• Very economical and helps make high availability affordable
Fully highly available
• Both nodes contain duplicated information
Fully integrated
• Administered through the cluster interface
• Very simple to administer

Collax GmbH21
Server Virtualization Solution: Collax V-SAN
How it works:
The Cluster Manager mirrors drives on each nodes
• The admin decides on size, number, name etc.
• The Cluster Manager does the rest
The Cluster Manager keeps mirrored drives synchronized
• Data arrives at one node
• Data is stored on a mirror drive
• The Cluster Manager copies it to the other node
If data arrives on the other node and the same happens
If a node fails, the other node takes over
• All data duplicated so no unavailability
