59 NIGEL BROWN Clairmont Painting Acrylic on board 132.5 x 100 Signed, inscribed & dated 1985 10,000 - 15,000
The tragic suicide of Philip Clairmont in 1984 robbed Nigel Brown of a close friend and supporter. The controversial Clairmont series was his way of dealing with this bereavement.
Notable for its use of banner-like text, Brown’s striking Clairmont Painting formally references funerary iconography in its epitaph-like design. The imagery operates as a portrait of their friendship, expressing a series of shared iconographic references such as the black singlet, the heart and skull

Along the Pali coast of Kauai, the cliffs rise from the sea to a breathtaking 3,000 feet. To some minds Hawaii seems to have little place on the American West, but it has won that place in spirit if not in geography. It was for us our last glimpse of America on our way back to our own country, New ZealandText: Peter McIntyre’s West A H & A W Reed1970

Charles McPhee 1910 - 2002 was one of the original velvet painters. He studied with the founder of this genre, American Edgar Leeteg 1904 -1954. In the early years after WWII, painting on velvet was cast as a unique new technique enabling the artist to render life forms in a tactile and extremely lifelike way. McPhee enjoyed immense success, he was always one year behind with his portrait schedule of commissioned works. His popularity was such that his exhibitions were always sell outs. McPhee died in Auckland in November 2002 at the age of 92.
A documentary titled Velvet Dreams was directed by award winning Samoan director Sima Urale in 1998. The narrator meets velvet artists and collectors in Seattle, Arthur Leeteg’s widow in Tahiti, art historians in Auckland and, finally the then 88 year-old velvet painter, adventurer and party boy, Charles McPhee.

‘To see such a beautiful and painstaking
catalogue is quite literally breathtaking.
It makes me dizzy and a little bit
inadequate just thinking about it, and I’m
amazed we even had artists and designers
of this calibre operating in New Zealand!’
Dick Frizzell, Artist
The Art of Early New Zealand TourismSELLING THE DREAM
www.sellingthedream.co.nz
PETER ALSOP, GARY STEWART & DAVE BAMFORD
Selling the Dream is a 408-page, large-format, high-end production with close to 1000 images and 11 specially commissioned essays, published by Craig Potton Publishing. It is the fi rst dedicated and extensive celebration of tourism posters and other publicity that helped promote New Zealand – both locally and to the world – until the 1960s, before television and colour photography changed the publicity landscape forever. The book will leave you in no doubt that the art of early tourism was highly signifi cant in New Zealand’s art history, and in the development of New Zealand’s tourism industry and sense of national identity.
Be prepared to reminisce, feel even better about this great country, and plan your next New Zealand adventure.
‘It is in the art of the poster that
artists use their imagination
and invention to unashamedly
celebrate and reveal the
uniqueness of the New Zealand
scene.’
Hamish Keith, Cultural Historian
‘You’ve sold me this particular dream
alright. Ka kite ano Toss, Colin and
Ralph; kia ora Marcus King and
Leonard Mitchell! This book
is one fantastic contribution to
New Zealand art history.’
