Emma is inspired by the heroine of the novel of the same name, by author Jane Austen, which was published in 1815. Headstrong, beautiful and rich, Emma was typical of upper class or gentile women of this period. in an age when marriage secured social standing and economic security for women, the novel explores Emma’s attempts at matchmaking amongst her circle of friends and acquaintances. Austen’s sense of humour, understanding of social manners and keen observation of the hum-drum of daily life in a small town has made the book one of her most loved works.

Emma’s costume recreates the fashionable regency styles of the period 1811-1820, when the Prince of Wales acted as Prince Regent for King George iii, who was deemed unfit to rule. Dresses were influenced by the Empire Style; skirts draped from a fitted bodice below a woman’s bust, the material skimming the body shape rather than being shaped by petticoats or hoops. Emma’s green outer coat, with short puffed sleeves, falls open to reveal her pretty floral printed dress, and her matching shoes are finished with a gold trimmed floral buckle.

Judged to be fitzgerald’s finest book, The Great Gatsby has inspired several films with the sixth version released in may 2013. Daisy, possessing great beauty and a sparkling, if superficial, personality, is the epitome of the socialites, the so called ‘flappers’ of the 1920’s.

The figurine portrays Daisy as a confident young woman with a stylish bob hairstyle and in a costume that’s also the height of fashion. Georgiana is inspired by the beautiful and aristocratic women of the late 18th century, of socialites such as Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire. Confident and stylish, hosting salons (or gatherings) of the leading literary, artistic and political personalities of the day, such women had many influential friends but also many enemies.

Wearing a stunning blue gown, which would have been made from silk, Georgiana is the epitome of the late Georgian age. Her outfit includes many period details such as the full and exaggerated shape of the skirts – ladies of the era achieved this look by wearing petticoats over a hoop, which was made from linen and stiffened with whalebone or cane. The Christmas Day figurine is designed to complement the smaller petite figurine of the Year but it works equally well on its own.

Holiday Greetings is a Neil faulkner design and depicts a smart young woman who exudes an air of confidence as she bustles about her holiday preparations. She wears a long red riding coat with shoulder cape, bold brass buttons and capacious pockets – which, like her traditional cuff style Russian fur hat, are essential on a cold winter’s day! The shoulder cape also adds warmth and matches her dress, which can be seen peeping out from beneath her coat.

An essential part of Christmas decoration is the holly wreath and Holiday Greetings carries a distinctive design combining seasonal flowers such as the multi coloured hellebores with luxuriant green holly leaves. And the wreath features hand-made flowers, a traditional art form that can only be created by the most expert of ceramic artists.

Traditionally a wreath is symbolic of Advent and is combined with five candles, which are lit on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas and on Christmas Day too. But often wreaths are used more simply, without candles, as a floral decoration for the front door and as a way of greeting visitors over the holiday period.

The hem of the coat and cuffs of the sleeves are decorated with an intricate textured pattern emulating the recent vogue for embroidery.

The father Christmas Annual figure 2013 is based on a classic part of the festivities – the letter to Santa that’s eagerly written by children a few days before Christmas and sent up the chimney in a puff of smoke. And just to prove the Santa really does receive the letter, designer Neil faulkner has shown the red suited gent checking this vital paperwork as he sorts presents from his sack. The last thing he would want to do is leave the wrong present for a child and spoil the keenly anticipated surprise on Christmas morning.

Our jovial Santa is shown in front of a spectacular tree, it’s full of baubles of every colour and shape and glittery tinsel adds sparkle. The Christmas Tree was introduced to England in the early 19th century and was popularised by Queen victoria and Prince Albert.

Decorating a tree had long been a tradition in Germany where, originally, evergreen trees were placed at the entrance to a home during the midwinter holidays to scare away evil spirits. Gradually, over centuries, it became customary to also decorate the tree with cookies and candles. in victorian England, the decorations became increasingly elaborate with candles, candies, fancy cakes and paper chains being hung from the branches.

Christmas Kiss reveals mr and mrs Claus sharing a romantic moment underneath the mistletoe, surrounded by their woodland friends. Santa is in his traditional red costume – matched by mrs Claus in her long red gown and fur trimmed cape. Has he just returned from his world wide trip delivering presents or is he about to set out? Nonetheless, the Christmas tree is beautifully decorated with lights and baubles, whilst a reindeer and a bird cluster around joining in the good cheer. A happy looking snowman with blue scarf and traditional carrot for his nose surveys the scene – at least there’s no shortage of snow or sub zero temperatures at the North Pole.

Joy to the World is an early carol dating back to 1719. The lyrics were written by isaac Watts – a prolific carol and hymn writer - and the tune is thought to have been originally composed by Handel. However, in 1839 the American composer Lowell mason rearranged the tune to the one that is so well known today.

We Wish You A merry Christmas is perhaps the most well known and frequently sung of Christmas carols and songs but its origins are unknown. it is thought to have developed in England’s West Country in the 16th century and it became traditional for carol singers to sing it as their last song as they toured their neighbourhood spreading festive cheer. it was also a hint for house holders to reward the singers with a small treat – such as the song’s figgy pudding (a kind of Christmas pudding) or, more often nowadays, a mince pie.
