COLLECTOR’SEDITION

ORIGIN ISSUE!

the news and ideas magazine for the agents of liberty national!

The fascination with superheroes has been ingrained in all of us since we were kids. As adults, we may have found this fascination has waned some, but I think if we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll still find a part of us remains in awe of their super strength, powers, or abilities that set them apart from the average Joe. From comic books to blockbuster movies, they have drawn an audience and held its attention. Fictional though they may be, superheroes have remained a significant part of our culture throughout the years, for children and adults alike.

So what exactly do we find so enticing about these supernatural beings? Of course it’s exciting to see or read about Superman lifting cars and buildings, Spider-Man showing off his impressive acrobatic and web-making skills, or Wonder Woman’s power of flight, but it’s something deeper and more personal about them that we’re drawn to.

Superheroes are fascinating because of what they do, not how they’re built. It might be entertaining to see Superman melt something with his eyes, but unless it’s for some greater purpose, I think the audience would lose interest pretty quickly. It is the noble and heroic acts they perform that make their stories interesting, and that give them the label of superheroes.

If we look at our own lives and professions in a similar fashion, can we say that we are using our own strengths and abilities for something good, something useful? I know we can’t boast of any extraordinary capability like the superheroes we grew up admiring, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be using our own, human talents to achieve great things.

I believe at Liberty National, we have achieved some great feats. We might not have burst through brick walls or flown around the world to do so, but we have helped our community and our fellow Agents in some pretty remarkable ways. I think it’s safe to say we’ve helped avert a (financial) disaster or two – doesn’t that deserve recognition? Isn’t that something that can be labeled as heroic?

It’s not far-fetched to say in our own way, we are superheroes ourselves. And each of us has our own strengths and abilities to accomplish some heroic deeds. What you

need to do is find your own strength and make something out of it. Are you great at recruiting? Do you have the desire to help people build some financial protection? These qualities, to me, are your super powers, and it’s encouraging to know that we all have them! But remember, it’s not enough just to be in possession of something great – we must use our abilities for something bigger, something beyond ourselves.

I have every confidence that our talented team of Agents and Managers will continue to accomplish heroic deeds, and will be the driving force to take our Company to the next level. You are the strength of LNL, the power source of the Company, and I am counting on you – the Superheroes of Liberty National – to use your strengths to find success.

THE CRAZE CONTINUES - CHILD SAFE EVENTS! UM Cynthia Barreira of Vickie Ketron’s Branch has shown off her super powers again! Cynthia, along with other members of her Branch, has participated in several Child Safe events, including Safety Day at Smokies Park, where they delivered about 250 teacher packets, reaching 6,000 students.

At Townsend Child Safety Day (pictured), Cynthia and Agent Susan Ogilvie worked for four hours to collect 52 leads, creating great exposure for Liberty National and the Child Safe Kits. Keep up the super work!

Are you college recruiting? Juan Diaz is. Unit Manager Juan Diaz of Owen Wilson’s Branch applied what he learned at #LLA101 in April. “We have a local college near our Branch, so I joined that college’s group on LinkedIn and it’s yielding awesome networking opportunities.”

While John “Bluto” Blutarsky wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) be on LinkedIn, many qualified candidates are. College students, recent graduates, and college alumni are looking for careers. Are you gonna help connect them with The Opportunity of a Lifetime?

Here are some ways you can do col lege recruiting . . . without ever stepping a foot on campus. - Make a l ist of col leges in your area - Log into LinkedIn - Search for col leges to see if they have a Group - Join the Group - People wil l post they are looking for a job - Respond to their post with how they can contact you. Refer them to your Branch website, to our Official Social Media pages, LNLCareers.com

- Pat yourself on the back that you helped LNL get closer to $100 mil l ion per year

‘Closer to the Heart’ is a charitable project recently begun by Torchmark Corporation and implemented through Liberty National and other Torchmark affiliates.

‘Closer to the Heart’ is a fantastic way for Agents and Managers to make a difference in communities in need – all in the great locales Liberty National visits!

We realize poverty is often just a few steps away in the beautiful and exotic getaways to which we travel. We are so fortunate to be able to attend events in these wonderful locations.

‘Closer to the Heart’ is a way to pay forward our good fortune, to leave these communities better than we find them, and to have a positive impact on their future!

When Liberty National travels for Branch Managers meetings, Council meetings, Company Conventions, or other events, we’ll find a worthy way to give back to the community we are visiting. That might mean we build a house for a person in need, or assemble care packages for an orphanage.

The Home Office selects the organization and determines its needs. Torchmark will match funds collected across all its affiliates up to $100,000 annually.

‘Closer to the Heart’ is another way Liberty National leaves a positive mark on our communities and our world!

From John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

We cannot become what we need by remaining what we are.

- John C. Maxwell

•When real leaders speak, people listen.

•How to see the way a person became a leader:

- Who they are- Who they know- What they know- What they feel- Where they’ve been- Past successes- What they stand for

THE LAW OF E.F. HUTTON #5

We are blessed at Liberty National to be guided by real leaders. When you hear Roger Smith or Steve DiChiaro speak at a Branch Managers meeting or at Liberty Leadership Academy, it’s obvious why they are leaders. They share with us on every level - who they are, who they know, what they know, what they feel, where they’ve been, their past successes (and failures), and what they stand for. They share themselves. They are true leaders and motivate and inspire each of us to be the same.

Roger Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer, and

Steve DiChiaro, Executive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer

Laura Shriver is a prime example of one of the many superheroes of LNL.

Laura came to Liberty National because of the potential to increase her income. “I love the culture here,

but the income opportunity is what really inspired me to leave my old company and join Liberty National,” she says. “My old career didn’t have the lifetime residuals this Company offers.”

Laura’s appreciation for her good fortune extends to her desire to help those who are less fortunate. She and a friend have

used their time and talents for the charity Servin for a Cause. They donate all of the money they raise to Kelly for Kids, which is committed to serving disadvantaged and disabled youth in Western New York.

“We started this charity because I grew up very poor, and there were some adults and programs that helped me financially when I was growing up, so I wanted to give back, especially given how blessed I am today,” Laura says.

Through an annual volleyball tournament Laura and her friend have organized, they have raised nearly $50,000 through ticket sales, silent auctions, and corporate sponsorships.

Props to Laura for her awesome efforts!

For more info, go to the Servin for a Cause Facebook page and www.kellyforkids.com.

The Agents and Managers of LNL bring an assortment of talents and abilities to the table, and Joe Kelly Jackson is no exception.

Joe came to Liberty National with a background in the arts, as he worked

in the film industry and as a professional musician (“I’m really good,” Joe says whimsically). His résumé includes recording in the famous RCA Studio B, working on film sets in Los Angeles, and licensing films for DVD distribution while doing PR work for DVD covers and ad campaigns.

With the uprise of streaming video came the downturn of the DVD industry, and unfortunately, of Joe’s health as well.

“When I got ill, it got me in touch with how cataclysmic an illness can be,” he says.

As he regained his health, Joe’s sister served as his caretaker, whom he later lost to cancer. This event showed him firsthand the financial impact a Liberty National policy can have. Says Joe, “I’m big into promoting our cancer policies.”

Joe values his new AUM position and appreciates his Branch. “Michele Sellors has a deep compassion for people, and I’ve noticed that with most of the people I’ve met at Liberty National,” he says. “It’s a great Company.”

The Company reciprocates his positive opinion, and values the talents, fantastic attitude, and compassion for others that make Joe a superhero of LNL.

perspective

The Power of Recruiting

Vickie KetronKnoxville Metro, TN Branch Manager

The word ‘opportunity’ seems to be thrown around quite a bit these days. So much, maybe, that we sometimes may find ourselves taking it and its meaning for granted.

What does your mind conjure up upon hearing such a – let’s be honest – vague and indirect term? Do you think of it to mean something that can come about only through great struggle, or a perfect-storm? Do you think of it as some sort of buzzword leaders simply use to motivate?

Let’s be clear what opportunity REALLY is: it’s what you’ll find EVERY DAY when you’re with Liberty National. Here’s how I embraced the opportunities Liberty National presented me, and how I suggest you do the same to grow your business and income:

Take Full Advantage of the AUM Program There’s nothing more important you can do on any given day than recruit. Plain and simple, recruiting makes the wheels go ‘round, and there’s no better way to make those wheels spin faster than advancing the most driven of Agents to AUM.

The more AUMs in your Branch, the better position it’ll be in for recruitment going forward. From the Branch Manager down to the first-week Agent, establish a culture of recruiting, and be bold in discussing how every single person in the Branch plays a role and benefits from it.

The AUM program changed the productivity level of my Branch into a well-oiled recruitment machine, and if you follow the Recruiting Playbook, it will absolutely help yours too.

Hire a Caller If your team isn’t hiring as many people as you’d like, it would be beneficial to hire a paid caller. Plan on this individual, or group of individuals, to come to work every morning with one mission: making calls and supplementing the recruiting activity within your Branch.

If your Branch hires more than one caller, put them together in groups not only to raise their comfort and skill level, but to breed some competitiveness between them.

Promote Personal Observation Recruiting The national unemployment rate is 8.2% right now*, and people want what we have – careers.

Unemployed and underemployed people are in your grocery stores, at your churches, in line at your banks, serving you dinner at your local restaurants, or even in the contact list on your cell phone.

You’ve got to be proactive in getting these people interested and in the door if you want to grow your business. How? Train recruiting dialogue within your Branch, get comfortable in discussing the virtues of our Company inside and out, and then put that training to practice. I’m telling you – people will want to work with us.

Be passionate If you’re not passionate about this career, then nothing I’ve written up until this point really makes any difference. My Branch has had an amazing couple of years, and it’s been a life-changing time for me and several members of my Branch.

It’s because of our passion – believe that.

Do you share my passion for this Company? Do you share my passion for REAL opportunity?

If the answers to those questions are yes, then guys, we’re on track to transform Liberty National into the Company we all want it to be: far and away, the best provider of life and supplemental health insurance in America. I’m confident that in a short time, we’re going to be writing $100 million – every year.

Let’s do this.

The AUM program changed the productivity level of my Branch into a well-oiled recruitment machine, and if you follow the Recruiting Playbook, it will absolutely help yours too.

What seven-year-old hasn’t jumped off the couch in the family room trying to fly like Superman? I know I did, and I’m sure many of you did too. We all want to be superheroes when we’re young. It takes us out of the realm of homework, chores, bedtime – the realities of childhood – into a world of fantasy, where anything and everything is possible. You may not be seven years old anymore, but a part of you still wants to be a superhero. And you know what’s so exciting? You are!

You don’t have to ‘leap tall buildings in a single bound’, have X-ray vision, or super strength to be a superhero. You’re a superhero when you deliver a life insurance claim check to a grieving widow. You’re a superhero when you take time to help protect the lives of a young husband and wife and their growing family. You’re a superhero when you bring the opportunity of a lifetime to a man or woman who has been unemployed for six months and is struggling to pay the mortgage.

It’s so rewarding to watch that new recruit become a superhero too. Tell them you believe in them, and they will believe in themselves. Tell them they can make a difference for their customers, themselves, and their families, and they will make a difference. Tell them they are great, and they will be great. And then show them how to achieve those goals!

You’ve heard the old saying, “Attitude is everything.” I can’t emphasize enough how true that statement is. We’ve all heard or seen examples of individuals who achieved greatness under the most unlikely circumstances. It was sheer grit and determination that helped them to reach their goals and live their dreams. As I said at the last Leadership Academy, the most important distance we have to successfully navigate is that five inches between our ears. Superhero status is potentially in every new recruit; we only have to bring it out. If they believe they can achieve, they will achieve.

The fantasy of being a superhero when you were seven years old is many years behind you. But the reality of being a superhero in the here and now is right in front of you. The things you do every day that may seem routine can be life-changing for others. It’s all a question of perspective, isn’t it? You can make a difference. You can make the world a better place. You can make your dreams a reality. When you bring The Opportunity of a Lifetime to others, you are the ultimate superhero … and you don’t even have to put on the cape and tights!!
