BENTLEY PRIORY was the headquarters of Fighter Command in

the summer of 1940. From here Air Chief Marshal, Sir Hugh Dowding, directed operations during the four month Battle of Britain.

This handsome house, designed by Sir John Soane and set among beautiful

gardens, is no longer required by the Royal Air Force. It is to become a museum and a centre of education that will attract a wide range of visitors when it opens in 2013. A permanent exhibition will be created to inform visitors about the great events that played out at the Priory; in particular the huge debt that all of us, who enjoy freedom today, owe to those who took part in the struggle of 1940.

This worthy project is in the final straight of its fund raising run, having already raised £12 million. The Trust needs to raise a further £1.8 million to complete the appeal.

The Battle of Talana Hill (or Battle of Dundee) was the first major battle of the Anglo-Boer War. World War I

Staffordshire WWI HonoursWhen the world was turned upside down in the summer of 1914 the regiments of the British Army were ready to answer the call to war. In August of that year thousands of troops set sail for the Continent as part of the British Expeditionary Force; the men of South Staffordshire and North Staffordshire were amongst them. In two major books Jeffery Elson looks at all the Honours and Awards earned by these leading Regiments during the war years. From the Victoria Cross through to “MIDs” these books cover all the gallantry awards made to the Staffordshire

Regiments and are essential reference sources for anyone with an interest in the history of the Regiments or the county. With full citations, photographs where available and alphabetical listings in each medal category, these works are a must-have for any collector of medals to the North and South Staffords—making research infinitely easier.

Medals, Decorations & Orders of the Great War

What is special about this book, and its sister publication dealing with World War II, is that it doesn’t concentrate just on British and Empire medals but rather looks at the awards made to all combatants and whilst it is of particular importance to those dealing with the Great War

and immediate aftermath, the inclusion of so many “other countries” than those we are used to researching gives it a far wider appeal. Needless to say, if you collect World War I medals you have to have this book!

Founded in 1836 during the reign of William IV, the Society for the Protection of Life from Fire pioneered fire escape and rescue services in London and then across the country. Saved from the Flames by Roger Willoughby and John Wilson, both well-known experts on life-saaving awards, tells the fascinating story of the Society from its earliest days, including how the initial setup descended into acrimony and financial collapse with even the Secretary ending up in debtor’s prison, to its reform in 1843 where under new management an evangelical spirit and philanthropic zeal helped the Society progress solidly through the 19th century. By 1881 it was a purely humane society distributing medals, watches, testimonials and other awards. in ths book the history of these events

is discussed in critical and substantial detail, charting the fate of the Society through its Victorian heyday and the turbulent years of the 20th century up to the present day. The Society continues its important work recognising and applauding the extraordinary actions of many ordinary people.Entering blazing buildings, vehicle wrecks and other situations where fires occur to save life takes considerable courage even for those trained and equipped for the task. The Society has always sought to reward those brave men, women and children who have shown such courage. The names of many of those decorated by the Society are recorded here for the first time, together with details of the dramatic events and sometimes tragedies that formed a catalyst for their actions.

The Martini-Henry NotebookAn excellent new book on one of history’s most famous rifles. Undoubtedly much of British military history would have been very different had it not been for the part played by the Martini-Henry and this book takes a look at why that is. A fascinating read, particularly for those with an interest in

the colonial wars of the 19th century.

awarded For valourThe Victoria Cross: the highest standard of valour. The exploits of its winners are the stuff of legend. But why was it instituted? What factors came together during the Crimean War to create this award? Since its inception 1,356 have been awarded, but the circumstances of warfare have changed and with them the very concept of heroism has evolved. awarded for Valour traces the evolution of this concept from its origins on the fields before Sevastopol, across the dashing campaigns of imperial expansion and defence, where the concept of heroism was a curious combination of the romantic and the pragmatic (all held in place with a stiff upper lip) and into the cauldron of the First World War, from which a very different concept of heroism arose.
