Approximately 351,000 youths in North Carolina

drink each year (grades9-12) 20% Had their first drink before the age of 13(Center for Disease Control)

38% Had at least one drink in the past 30 days(Center for Disease control)

21% had five or more drinks in a row in the past 30 days(Center for Disease Control)

5% had at least one drink on school property in the past 30 days (Center for DiseaseControl)

In 2007 underage drinkers consumed 10.4% of all alcohol bought in North Carolina. These sales helped the alcohol industry profit $187 million . ( Miller)

In conclusion chances that these patterns will continue in a college environment arevery likely

Why is under age drinking a

Problem? People that are affected by underage drinking at UNCC

    Maintenance staff-

must clean up after students who have made messes in the bathroom, commonrooms, and elevators, whether it be they got sick, or destroyed property.

must go through the process of finding replacements for all damaged and or brokenobjects on campus

most of the time it is impossible to find who did the damage so maintenance must

    charge the entire floor

    Why is Underage Drinking a

    Problem? Dorm mates of drinker

Vice Chancellor for Health Programs and Services at UNC Charlotte, David Spano says, We

recognize that student drinking can have a negative impact on students academic, personal andprofessional success;... (Bland)

Intoxicated people often times are a disturbance to those around them (yelling, being destructive, acting obnoxious), including students who are trying to study and or do any form of school work. This causes large issues especially in dorms

These intoxicated people cause students who are trying to focus to become distracted, this canlead the students to; not complete their assignments, lose track while studying, and or even start

    partaking in the illegal activities.

Drinking not only affects the students academic wise, also their health as well.If students arebeing rowdy at night it keeps up students who are trying to get a good nights sleep. Missing sleepcan cause the non drinking students to mess up and their sleep patterns and occasionally missclasses which will make them fall behind.

    Whys is Underage Drinking a

    Problem?

    -Dorm mates of drinker continued

if the drinker destroyed any property in the halls, bathrooms, or common

rooms the entire floor will be charged for repairs.

Under age drinking also directly affects the drinkers RAs in which the RAneeds to stop what they are doing, whether it be school or work or personalwork in order to investigate noise complaints, and or write up citations fordrinking in the residents rooms.

    I

n conclusion drinking takes a toll on those that are partaking, and notpartaking in the actual action of drinking. Those around the environment arejust as affected as those who are dong the actual actions. The grades ofstudents who are put into a situation in which drinking is in their environmentgenerally lose track academically because they are distracted. They also losesleep because of the disturbances of alcohol, which can cause them to fallbehind in classes and lose points on their grades .

Why In under age drinking a

Problem? How under age drinking affects the University.

It makes the University look irresponsible/ not able to enforcerules on campus

Being known as a drinking school makes the University get abad reputation, which may cause it to loose incoming students

Makes the appearance of the UNCC go down( many times whileintoxicated students will litter/ destroy property/get sick)

example: Sandford and Moore Halls Courtyard

    Possible Solution Number One

    Lower the drinking age

    Amethyst Initiative

    1. Chancellors and Presidents of 135 Universities across the United States have cometogether to try to get congress to reconsider the drinking age

    2. They believe that the problem of irresponsible drinking by young people continuesdespite the minimum legal drinking age of21. (Amethyst Initiative Mission Statement)

    3. They want congress to weigh all the consequences of current alcohol policies andinvite new ideas on how to best prepare young adults to make responsible decisions

about alcohol use. ( Amethyst Initiative Mission Statement)

    Possible Solution Number

One Cont4. Amethyst Initiative support their idea by saying, Adults under21 are deemed capable

of voting, signing contracts, serving on juries, and enlisting in the military, but are toldthey are not mature enough to have a beer. (Amethyst Initiative Mission Statement)

    5. This would allow for Universities to set rules and regulations such as appropriate times

and or places in which drinking would be allowed.

Although what The Amethyst Initiative is setting out to do makes sense to many, it isjust not feasible. Ever since the drinking age was raised to 21 people all around thecountry have been trying to get it dropped back down to 18, None of which have beensuccessful. There are too many laws and regulations that need to be passed in orderfor this idea to be successful. Also it will be met with much protest by those whobelieve 18 year olds are too irresponsible to control themselves with alcohol in their

    system.

    Create24

    hour quiet dorms

These dorms would allow for students to be in a 24 hour a dayenvironment in which they would not be in contact withdistractions while doing school work or getting rest

Because it will be quiet hours at all hours of the day, it wouldmake it almost impossible to have drinking in these dorms, seeing as the noise would be noticeable to all

    Why it wont work

The university is already spending millions of dollars on construction projects aroundcampus (EPIC - $55 million, New Football Stadium - $45 million,Phase x dorms-unknown). With more and more incoming students each year the University would have toeither use existing dorms and turn them into a 24 hour quiet dorm, or build new ones, buteither way the building of new dorms would be necessary in order to fit all students Andwith the current projects already in action, it seems unfeasible to start new projects withthe schools budget

If this idea were put into place the issue of finding students who would want to be in a 24hour silent environment would also come into play.

This idea would help solve the idea of drinking in this dorm only.It would not help campus

wide with the issue of drinking, which means it would not solve the entire problem.

    12/13

    Possible Solution Number

    Three

Have a one and done policy in residence halls

If a student is caught with alcohol in their possession or if they are under theinfluence they will immediately be asked to leave on campus housing

This idea will not solve the individuals drinking problem, but it will cause the drinkingto be moved off campus

If the drinking is moved off campus then those students who are on campus will not

have to deal with the consequences of drunk students in residence halls

Although this solution may seem harsh it is an efficient way to get the alcohol off ofcampus and to stop the distraction of innocent students and faculty members
