DESCRIPTION

"We were delighted to be asked by D&AD to host a workshop for this year’s New Blood festival which gave us a rare opportunity to give something back to the institution that helped introduce us to the design industry. Rather than simply sharing our recent work with the graduates we decided to put the collective experience of our studio to better use. We set about compiling this A-Z directory bursting with practical tips and advice along with helpful insights from other design professionals to help the graduates as they journey from the classroom to the studio," The Co-founders of Alphabetical, Bob Young and Tommy Taylor said.

  • LANDING YOUR DREAM JOB

We know what its like to be fresh from university, feeling like a small fish in a big pond.

We decided to put the collective experience of our own design studio to good use, by compiling this directory bursting with practical tips and advice along with helpful insights from industry professionals. We hope this will help you to avoid the pitfalls and spot the opportunities as you journey upstream from the classroom to the studio.

Short term placements or junior freelance positions are a good place to build up experience. They give you the chance to test the water and show a design agency what you are made of.

Getting paid for doing a job you enjoy is always satisfying, and as a valued addition to any design team most studios will reward your contribution fairly.

University will undoubtedly have prepared you for living on a shoestring, but before you accept a placement or job consider your travel, accommodation and living expenses. Decide if a particular studio is an investment you can afford.

Different Creative Directors look for different qualities in their designers. So if there is a studio you are interested in working at, there is no harm in asking them directly for their own personal opinion.

Attending industry talks and lectures are also a great way to hear from the masters.

    BOrdErING ON EXCELLENCE

Sharing your portfolio with a Creative Director can be a daunting experience. But embrace the opportunity to talk through your work with the passion it deserves. Relax and engage with the person you are talking to and your work will speak for itself.

    ESCOrtS

    Prepare everything the night before.

Be on time. It can be just as inconvenient arriving 10 minutes early as 10 minutes late.

On average it will take between 30-45 minutes to look and talk through your portfolio.

If you are seeing more than one studio in a day leave plenty of time in-between appointments.

Socialising in the pub after work is a treasured part of British design culture. And its a great way to get to know your team.

The design community is a surprisingly small world and you are likely to be introduced to lots of designers working at other agencies. So make the most of these opportunities to make lasting acquaintances and fruitful connections.

    72O OffICE furNIturE

Design studios are often a rich mix of characters so show interest in them and ask questions about what is going on.

The simple courtesies will be noted, like making sure everyone has a warm drink and asking if anyone needs any help.

Design agencies will be interested in you for who you are and the enthusiasm you bring. But articulating yourself in a mature way and making the effort to correct poor spelling and grammar in your portfolio shows that you are someone they can communicate with easily. It will also fill them with confidence that you can represent them well when answering the phone or emailing clients.

Before accepting a full-time position at a studio it's important to get a clear picture of what it is actually like to work there. If a short-term placement is not possible then consider asking an industry professional whose opinion you respect.

Find out what other clients the studio looks after and what the turnover of designers is like this gives you a good indication of whether a studio is going to be a good fit for you.
