POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Some programs may have additional course requirements (Math, Science)

Note: MAP 4C and MCT 4C are different!

MAP 4C – most programs including business

MCT 4C – tech/trades/computer science

Arts programs may require portfolios or auditions to be accepted

It is up to YOU to make sure you have

the courses you need for the programs

to which you are applying!

LEVELS ARE IMPORTANT!Look at the students below – one has lower grades at the University Level, the other has higher grades at the College Level.

Some schools/programs do not distinguish between U or C level courses (such as the Powerline Technician program at Algonquin College)

Having U/M Level courses is not always an advantage!

What Type of Program Do You Want to Study?

DEGREES IN DEMAND: OFFERED BY COLLEGES!

Historically only Universities offered 4-year degree programs but now Colleges do too! The degree credential is the SAME as that earned at a University.

Degree programs at Colleges allow you to develop career-specific, hands-on skills in addition to acquiring academic theory.

There will be an admission requirement of 6 courses that are Grade 12 University- or University/College (M)- level

OPTION #3: ATTEND A COLLEGE FAIR

OPTION #4: ATTEND SCHOOL VISITS AT ESS

See a presentation and speak to representatives from Georgian, Centennial, Canadore, Humber, Fleming, Conestoga, Algonquin, and Lambton College, coming in October and November to ESS!

Refer to handout (distributed at end of presentation) for specific dates/times/presentation locations … as well as everything else you need to know about College preparation, research and applications!

*the most inexpensive option!

You MUST sign-up in Guidance to attend

OPTION #5: CAMPUS TOUR/VISIT

Contact your school of interest to arrange a

formal tour, or drop in for an unscheduled visit

Weekends/holidays are a great time to go!

Have a look at the campus, residences, and

College town – are they what you are looking

Applications, Offers and Acceptances all handled electronically at ontariocolleges.ca(access opens October 2015 – you can apply any time after Thanksgiving )

$95 application fee (paid online) covers up to 5 (maximum) College program choices (NOTE: Only 3 program choices permitted per school)

Midterm and Final grades are sent to Colleges

NOTE: Out-of-Province schools may have different deadlines – check with school’s website.

(although it is possible to receive an offer before February if you were an early applicant)

May 1, 2016 – DEADLINE TO ACCEPT ***Note: late offers/acceptances may be possible depending on school/program

June 15, 2016 – Earliest date Colleges may require tuition payment

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEBursaries/Grants – cash awards you don’t

repay

Scholarships – cash awards given by a donor

who establishes the recipient criteria

Line of Credit – Loan from bank you must repay

(and pay interest on immediately)

OSAP – Loan from government that does not

gain interest/require repayment until 6

months after graduation. You can’t apply for

OSAP until after you have accepted an offer of

acceptance (approximately April 2016)

Work/Save! Avoid loans/interest if possible!!!

HAVE AN IEP? Take a recent copy of your IEP and ‘shop

around’ at schools of interest

Ask what accommodations they offer students,

such as:

-assistive technology

-scribes

-copies of lecture notes

-other accommodations listed on IEP

MISSING CREDITS TO GRADUATE?

There are alternative ways to finish graduation

requirements

DUAL CREDITS and SCHOOL WITHIN A COLLEGE

(SWAC) allow you to take College Credits at

Georgian AND finish off your high school credits

outside the ESS Building!
