College Magazine Research

These are some of the covers I have found during my research.

All these magazine covers show one person on the cover – most of them in medium close-up – and a masthead at the top of the page. Most of the covers show their contents on the left (except ‘Campus Life’). The main story on the covers is written in large bold font. ‘Indian Student’ is a specialist magazine aimed at a specific target group, whereas the other three are aimed at college students in general. I think that the two magazines on the left would be most appealing to students because they are aimed at a wider audience and show that they have articles in them that aren’t all about being at college, like the ‘U@Rio Salado’ magazine that seems to be more about applying to the college than about life at the college.

I think the most effective contents pages are the two on the left – the top left page is good because the layout is simple and easy to understand. The bottom left page is good because it shows pictures of the students who are involved in particular articles, making it more personal to the college. I think the page on the bottom right is good because it also shows the students, however the overall image is quite boring, the layout is too simple. The page on the top right is good because there seems to be a lot in the magazine but I think the presentation is too busy.

Covers that have inspired me

These are magazine covers I found that inspired my own ideas.

The top left cover I like because the it is a simple design and I like the way colour has been used on the font to highlight the main titles. I like the fonts used for the magazine title on the bottom left image because it uses a serif and a sans serif font; I think this shows that the magazine is for people who want to read about serious topics but also want more fun topics to read about as well. I like the way ‘Campus Life’ has designed their title with one word smaller and on the side, and I like the image used on ‘Bounce’ as it shows the personality interviewed in the main article, doing the activity that they are interviewed about (in this case, dancing)
