TRANSCRIPT
We continue to play the girls every Sunday morning, which remains the highlight
of the week, and with the taking-off of mixed netball this year, we have had quite a
few Sunday matches against other colleges. We managed to get a reputation of
being 'rather rough' although this was only against Trinity!
The following gentlemen have been awarded their College colours for the 1989-
90 season: Paul Rim mer, Steve Platts, John Cumberlege, Ieuan Davies, Chris Ford,
Singe Garnon, Rich Price.

Third team Anthony Stevenson Mike Brooks Paul Reed Tim Crosley
Fourth team Roger Moore John Franklin Omar Bangee James Margetson
Fifth team Claire Sweeney Nathan Elstub Tim Mortimer Barry Appleton
The first team reached the quarter finals of the Cup, where they lost to last year's winners, Trinity I. The second team are currently arranging to play Jesus 3 in the semi-final of the Plate, having defeated St John's 5 and St John's 4 among others to get that far. The third team narrowly lost their first round match by two 'imps' (international match points); and so entered the Plate, where they lost to Churchill 3 in the second round. The fifth team would like to be mentioned because they beat Caius I by 70 imps, but subsequently lost to St John's 2.
In future the club hopes to enter more teams in Cuppers and we hope for continued success. I wish the second team luck in their forthcoming match. Most of the current committee will be around next year to build on this year's success, and I would like to thank them for the time they have given up to help run the Society.

College Notes
College Officers
On 2 May 1991, Malcolm Schofield was elected to succeed Ben Garling as President of the College, and he duly took office on 16 May. Malcolm was born on 19 April 1942 in St Alban's, and attended St Alban's School. In 1960 he came up to St John's where he read Classics and Moral Sciences. Thus equipped for the study of Ancient Philosophy, he commenced doctoral research at Balliol College, Oxford in 1964. In 1967 he crossed the Atlantic and taught Classics for two years at Corn ell. There he met his wife Elizabeth, a Classical archaeologist. In 1970 they returned to Oxford where Malcolm took up a Research Fellowship at Balliol. Two years later his Odyssey came to an end when he was appointed a Lecturer in the Classics Faculty in Cambridge, and elected a Fellow of St John's. His son Matthew was born that same year. Since then Malcolm has played an active part in College life, serving as Praelector 1976-80, Dean 1979-82, Tutor 1982-89, and Admissions Tutor 1985-88. Administration did not impair his academic progress, however, and in 1983 his The Pre-Socratic Philosophers (with Kirk and Raven) went into a second edition. In 1989 he was appointed Reader in Classics, and became Honorary Secretary of the Classical Association. He has been editor of the journal Phronesis since 1987, and the coming year will see the publication of his latest book, The Stoic Idea of the City. In St John's, Malcolm has perhaps made his greatest mark to date as a Tutor. In this role he demonstrated two qualities which are sure to be both very useful to him and immensely beneficial to the College during his Presidency. His sense of fairness may have been learnt from the Greek philosophers; his sense of fun on the other hand is all his own.

become a Law Lord! The year's social events, culminated once again, with the May Week Garden Party, kindly sponsored by Freshfields. This event was, as usual, greatly lubricated, but was particularly buoyant due to the admittance of non-laywers as well - a suitably fitting end to a great year.
As far as academic activities are concerned, the main event was the annual Simmons & Simmons Mooring Corporation. Once again, to our delight (although probably not the competitors!), we were honoured to have The Right Honourable The Lord Templeman as the distinguished judge. Although the competitors, unusually, entirely consisted of 1st years, the standard was good and Lord Templeman not only amused the audience with his sharp quips but also gave some helpful hints on the skill of mooting which, hopefully, the competitors will be able to put into use in the competition next year.
We were also honoured this year to be addressed by Mr Anthony Inglese, the Legal Director of the Office of Fair Trading. Although the audience was small, Mr Inglese gave a most informative talk on that area of the law with which most undergraduate students are understandably ignorant, emphasis mostly being placed on the professions of Solicitors and Barristers. Hopefully, some of the lawyers and non-lawyers who attended will now have further options open to them when the time comes for choosing their specialisation area or in fact changing it.
In all, the year has been busy but most enjoyable both for the students and for the Committee who have organised it. We hope that future years will retain their reputation as being fun-loving as well as academics, so that the Winfield Society can retain its high proftle within the University.

Members' News
Bulletin
The Members' News section is compiled chiefly from the Biographical Record cards sent in each year. Over the past three years the response has been excellent and we are grateful to all those who return cards or send in CVs or letters. Please give us as much explanation of what you are doing as possible, as we are occasionally mystified by acronyms or company names. This year' section went to press at the end of June, but news received after that date will be collated for the 1995 edition. Whilst we can't publish everything, all your information is flled as part of the College's longstanding archive of biographical material about its Members.
The Biographical Archive, Biographical Database and the future
This archive, which is very much alive, covers every Member of St John's since comprehensive admissions records began in 1629, and combines information from College and University sources, notes on later lives and careers, and an ad hoc
collection of press cuttings, letters and miscellaneous documents. It is the cumulative work of College Fellows and others, beginning with Thomas Baker in the 18th century. J.E.B. Mayor and Sir Robert Scott (Master 1908-33) published the College Admissions Registers, with extensive biographical notes, up to 1802. F.P. White (Fellow 1919-69) began to transfer all the available information onto individual record sheets, a process continued by N.C. Buck (Sub Librarian 1956-82) and then by Malcolm Pratt, Sub Librarian, who retired in 1990. The archive is now in my care, but I rely very much on Malcolm and others who continue to fmd and supply information. Together with a related collection of books and pamphlets which are a rich source of biographical information, the archive provides material for genealogists and biographers, and is used to answer a wide variety of enquiries.
Over the past four years a computer held database of biographical information has also been built up, and will continue to grow. As well as helping to keep in touch with the burgeoning number of ever more mobile Johnians, this database, together with the documentary archive, will ultimately provide the material for an ambitious project to mark the College's 500th anniversary in 2011 - a Who's Who style Biographical Register of 20th Century Johnians. The backbone of each entry will be the details of birth, parentage and schooling recorded for every Member in the Admissions Registers together with basic details of College and University career, but supplemented wherever possible by information on later occupations, achievements, marriages and children. Although some systematic research can and will be done, we will rely very much on your goodwill and support in providing information for inclusion and hope that you will feel that this is a worthwhile project and a fitting marker of the College's half millenium.

Members' News
The Johnian Office
[n April this year, the College followed the lead of many other Cambridge Colleges in appointing a Development Officer. Catherine Twilley (BA 1992) will be working to bring about an increased sense of community amongJohnians. We wi!J be introducing a newsletter to supplement The Eagle and to keep you in touch with College and each other more frequently and, following the success of the Library Open Weekend in July 1995, we are starting Open Days for Johnians to complement the very popular Johnian Dinners. We hope many of you will take the opportunity to come back and see the College at work on one of these Open Days. You are, of course, welcome to come and visit whenever you wish and the new Library, in particular, is well worth a visit.
Since its foundation in 1511 by the will of Lady Margaret Beaufort, the resources of the College have derived in large measure from benefactions. While the Co!Jege does not wish to have a perpetual fund-raising campaign, its needs are great. The Development Officer will be working to ensure that the College takes advantage of any opportunities for funding which may arise, such as working with industry and applying for grants, as well as encouraging support from Members of College.
The newly formed Johnian Office, home to the Development Officer and the Biographical Officer, is located in F2A Chapel Court and is open to all Members of College. Johnians are welcome to call in when they are visiting Cambridge to find out about events and news in College. We hope the office will become a focal point for Johnians, both resident and non-resident. The Johnian Office will be open on weekdays from 9am to 5.30pnland we can be contacted on01223 338700.
The College is now represented on the World Wide Web and there are a number of pages which are specifically aimed at non-resident Johnians. These include details of special events, Johnian Dinners, Open Days, Dining Privileges, Choir Tours and Chapel Services, and other items of interest to Johnians. We very much hope you will use these pages.
The Web pages also include a new email directory which will help Johnians keep in touch with each other. Non-residentJohnians are invited to submit their email address for inclusion in the directory which can be searched to fmd fellowJobnians' addresses. f should stress that your email address will only be displayed if you request it and this move does not effect our handling of your postal addresses.
The College's pages can be accessed at: http:/ /www.joh.cam.ac.uk/
We hope that the College's presence on the World Wide Web will help you to keep in touch with College more frequently. The pages will be updated regularly by the Johnian Office.

142 COLLEGE NOTES
Cadwallader, and then Sumit Gupta. They have helped to ensure the growing ground for future first cricketers has been kept fertile. Now for the thirds. Very few colleges can rival the social cricket played at this level. Ash Notaney has managed to sculpt a huge squad of students of all abilities, shapes and sizes into the meanest looking cricket playing party machine I have ever seen. Congratulations to all the men's teams who have played cricket in the best of spirits, I look forward to another season with everybody.
That is not the end however. Women's cricket is starting to make an impact at John's. So far the practises and nets have been well attended by keen players. Cuppers takes place soon and hopes are high. Particularly, we look forward to some good bowling from Jo Griffiths, and solid batting from Hannah Bradley, Odette Valentine, Helen Hendry, and Sophie Dixon (the captain). Thank you to the Samworth brothers, Matt Siddle, and Roddy Vann for their coaching. Thanks also to everyone who donated kit to the new kit bag.

184· COLLEGE SPORTS
Here, amongst the surplus litres of Europe's wine lakes, St. John's faces armies of cider drinkers, caught guzzling from cardboard cartons like
recalcitrant schoolboys on a foreign exchange. The likes of vin de table de Magdalene, Pembroke, Jesus, and St. Catherine's 2nd's were all consumed without a murmur by the awesome talents of Blues
Swimming captain Jeremy Ip and Blues freestyle champion Steve
Coulthard, providing a mighty wake in which the weak splutter and drown. The sinister dark shadow of the mighty goal scorer, Andy
Bloxham, soon falls upon the unfortunate survivors, and Dave Cox,
Michael Yoong and Phil Cleverley sweep a merciless arc through the water beyond. County swimmer Liz Lothian and Cuppers freestyle
finalist Alex Starling - unfairly talented in goal - join the queue to
punish the fallen, and the stalwart efforts of Jim Kemp and Andrew Hadley add injury to insult, injury and injury. Even drafting in their first
division players did not help Addenbrookes 11.
Shockingly, in a sport noted for its gentle, Samaritan approach, (the gum shields, boxes and ear protectors are naturally omitted in 3rd division
games), Robinson's triple half Blue had his fingers broken in a blues
match, and, back in Cambridge, his third division drumming had to be
postponed. Robinson and St John's will meet later this term, and the issue of who will be promoted to the shelves of the 2nd division will be
decided then. Forcefully.
Rob Starling
Captain, St John's College Water Polo, 1997- 1998

Bequests and Donations to the College
During 1996-97 the College received notice of the following gifts and
bequests (not including gifts received in connection with the Sports
Appeal):
Mr R.A.R. Bracey (B.A. 1964, M.A. 1968) gave £10 to spend 'on someone
who 'went down' without a degree'. Later in the year Mr Bracey gave a donation of £17 to which no conditions were attached. That gift was
credited to the Tutors' Praeter Fund.
The College received an anonymous gift of £342 by Gift Aid with the
wish expressed, but not so as to create a binding trust, that the sum be
used to make a grant to a Johnian to assist with his fees for a M.Sc. Econ.
course.
Mr N. Yajima gave £100, as a token of affection for the College after
spending the academical year 1995-96 in College. Mr Yajima especially enjoyed the companionship with the Christians of the College. The gift
has been credited to the Alldred Fund (for the benefit of the Chapel).
The College received £1,912.87 (being the balance of the accumulated income of the Coventry Boy Foundation Fund, of which the late Mr E.H.
Foottit (B.A. 1931, M.A. 1944) was the sole surviving Trustee and which now reverts to the National Trust); the sum has been credited to the Foottit (Coventry Boy Foundation) Fund, for the repair and improvement
of College buildings.
The College received £86,440, being the whole of the estate of the late
Miss M.M. Gillson, in memory of her late brother, A.H.S. Gillson (B.A. 1911) 'for the general purposes of the College'. A Gills on Fund has been
instituted, the income to be used to support a Benefactor's Scholar.
Mr J.C. Tyacke (B.A. 1980, M.A. 1986) gave by Gift Aid the sum of
£6,578.90. A Student Grants Fund has been established, the purpose of which will be to give financial assistance to students of the College who do not qualify for a grant from the Tutors' Praeter Fund but who are nevertheless deserving of help. Mr Tyacke's gift has been credited to that Fund.
College Notes 191
The College received £3,771.65, following the death of a life tenant under the will of Mr F.K. Borrow, son of H.}. Borrow (B.A. 1851). The bequest has been credited to the Borrow Fund, its income to be used to
provide Scholarships for the 'sons of English-born parents, preference
being given to Cornishmen'.
Mrs Glyn Daniel (widow of Professor G.E. Daniel, Fellow 1938-86) gave
by Gift Aid three donations, of £657.89, £328.95 and £328.95. The gifts have been credited to the Daniel (Choir) Fund.
The College received a bequest of £80,000 from the estate of the late Professor L.S. Goddard (Ph.D. 1947). A Laurence Goddard Fund has
been constituted, the income of which is to be employed either towards
funding a research Fellowship in Pure Mathematics or for the assistance
of needy graduate students in Pure Mathematics.
Dr Hutchison gave the College a gift of an alder tree (alnus glutinosa
imperialis), which has been planted on the river bank.
The College received a gift of £100 from D.G. Webb (B.A. 1984, M.A.,
Ph.D. 1992). The gift has been credited to the B.H. Farmer Fund at Mr
Webb's request.
The Reverend Canon AN. Thompson (Ph.D. 1962) gave a gift of £250 'for the use of St John's chapel, choir and music'.
The College received £1,000 from the estate of the late Mrs F.E. Layton,
widow of P.H. Layton (B.A. 1927, M.A. 1947). The bequest has been credited to the Student Grants Fund.
The College received a bequest of £60,000 from the estate of the late Mr
R.E. Ince (B.A. 1927, M.A. 1931). An Ince Fund has been constituted, the income from which (in accordance with a suggestion from Mr !nee's
executor) is to be used preferably for the support of the Choir.
The College received a gift of £100 from Mr W.H. Darling (B.A. 1950,
M.A. 1955). The gift has been credited to the H.A. Harris Fund at Mr
Darling's request.

printed in the German language or concerning the language, history and culture of Germany, and £15,000. The books have been gratefully
accepted and a John Frederick Bennett Fund has been constituted.
The College received a gift of £1,000 from Mr R.D. Hirst (B.A. 1970, M.A.
1975) with a note saying: "I am not sure what the current project is but
