Social distancing seems to have much of the world at a stand still, but rest assured that 4-H on both the county and state levels are moving forward…virtually! The state 4-H Office has been busy working to transform annual programs into the virtual world in order to keep everyone safe during this time, while still allowing for opportunities to grow through 4-H opportunities. In fact, we just received notification that the State 4-H Leadership Conference is going virtual- more information is coming soon! As far as Eddy County 4-H programs go, we are still doing all we can to help keep you on track with your projects! From Zoom Club and Council meetings, to Facebook photo contests and workshops, 4-H in Eddy County is moving right along!! Be sure to keep in contact with us as you work on projects. It is definitely possible to work through project questions with the help of technology and we are just a phone call away! Trust us when we say, “We know life seems busier than ever!” The challenge to find balance at home when doing school, work, 4-H , and even making time to play seems daunting some days, but we are 4-H. We need to keep the 4-H Motto “TO MAKE THE BEST BETTER” while we endure these challenging times and strive to have a successful 4-H year. It is possible! event until ALL forms are turned in.

ALL ADULTS MUST complete the “Working With Minors” training and return their completed quiz to the Extension Office before being

approved as a leader. Contact the Extension Office staff as soon as possible to receive your training.

4-H Member Ages For 2019-2020 4-H Year

CLOVERBUDS: 5 to 8, years old AND in Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade (Born 2011, 2012, 2013, or 2014)

NOVICE: 9 to 11 years old or 8 years old AND in the 3rd grade. (Born in 2008, 2009, 2010 or born in 2011 AND in 3rd grade)

JUNIOR: 12 and 13 years old or 11 years old AND in 6th grade. (Born in 2006, 2007 or born in 2008 AND in the 6th grade)

SENIOR: 14 to 18 years old OR 13 years old AND in 8th grade (Born 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 or born 2006 AND in 8th grade)

**Youth who are 19 on or by December 31 of the current 4-H year (2018) are NOT eligible to enroll as a 4-H member. If you were born in 1999 or before, you are too old for the 2019-2020 4-H year. BUT, we would love to have you as a leader/or helper!

EDDY COUNTY 4-H MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING REQUIREMENTS

UPDATED MEETING REQUIREMENT: As voted on and passed at the April County Council meeting: All members MUST attend 4 club meetings held during the program year. Any substitutions must be approved by the club’s organizational leader.

Members must participate in the following:A demonstrationOne 4-H community service projectLead an activity – such as being a club officer, leading pledges, being in charge of recreation, etc. or other activities approved by the club’s organizational leaderMembers must participate in at least one 4-H Council meeting or activity per 4-H Year. Members must complete and turn-in a 4-H Story or Competition Record Book.

Members will be required to sign an annual acknowledgement of the Member in Good Standing requirements and turn in with their enrollment form.A final record showing completion of member in good standing requirements will be due to the 4-H Agent by July 1 and they must have been signed by the main organizational leader(s). Members participating in 4-H rodeos, shooting sports, and/or judging must show progress towards meetings the above requirements by April 1st in order to participate in any of these events. Members attending 4-H camps must show progress towards completing the above requirements by the registration deadline for that camp.The County Director and the Extension 4-H Agent have final jurisdiction on determining if a member has met the Member in Good Standings requirements. The Eddy County 4-H Member in Good Standing requirements must be fulfilled to be eligible to exhibit at the Eddy County Fair (both livestock and non-livestockprojects), to participate in 4-H judging, 4-H rodeos, shooting sports, camps, and other 4-H related activities.

How can you include 4-H projects to home-school

lessons?1. Use the project glossary to find

weekly spelling/vocabulary words.

2. Set a goal to read and learn one section of your project each day or even each week.

3. Consider what projects you can do that have a science component- Gardening, Livestock, Pets, Wildlife, Forestry, Food Preservation, any Baking projects, etc.

4. Projects with Math components (i.e., Measurements)- Sewing, Baking/Foods, Livestock, etc.

5. Create a poster for the fair on any topic you study from your project materials. *Be sure to use correct size.

6. Start your record book after you learn and complete project activities.

Shooting Sports State

ChampionshipsThe State 4-H Shooting

Sports Championships have been canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule due to scheduling and time constraints.

As a result of the Governor’s public health directive related to COVID-19, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish’s Hunter Education Program has canceled in-person courses at this time. The Department will resume offering classes and camps in the future. At this time we encourage you to take advantage of our online courses.Online course options the meet certification requirements are available at http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/hunter-education under the Online Options tab.

Eddy County tagging uPdatE

ATTENTION LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS!!Tagging days are cancelled per NMSU directives and orders. We will instead begin mailing out tags directly to exhibitors. Each individual exhibitor is responsible for tagging their animal, and returning the required paperwork to the Eddy County Extension Office. ***Each of you will need to complete the following:1. Respond to this email with the number of tags you will need and a valid shipping address. Be specific in ordering. (ex. 1-Dairy Heifer, 3 Steer, 3 Goat etc…)2. Mail a check for $5.00 per tag to the Eddy County 4-H Council 1304 W. Stevens Carlsbad, NM 882203. As soon as you receive your tags, put them in the animals Immediately!!!!!4. Take a picture of each tag in the animal and send it to Wayne at [email protected]. All pictures must be submitted by May 18!!! Do not text pictures!!! Email only!!!!5. Return the slip of paper that arrives with your tags with the required fields filled out to the office by May 18 as well.

Before you order tags, please verify that an animal does not already have an 840 tag in an ear. If so, please specify that you will need a 900 series tag for that specific animal.

All animals except swine are to be tagged in the right ear. Swine will be tagged in the left ear.

Any tags that are not verified in an animal by May 18 will not be allowed to exhibit at the Eddy County Fair. Any tags that are not paid for will also be invalid.All state fair and eastern fair animals must be tagged and submitted to Wayne by June 10 so that we can complete the paperwork and submit to the respective fairs.

If you need tagging pliers or help tagging your animals, several people in the county have graciously volunteered to help out. If you need help, contact Wayne and he will put you in contact with these people.
