TheElectricUtilityManagementProgramprovidesanadvancededucationprogramforfutureengineeringmanagerswishingtoworkintheelectricutilityindustry.Morethan230studentshavegraduatedfromtheprogram,andsevenhavebecomeCEOsofmajorelectricutilities.

Research HighlightDr.JeanineCookisinvestigatingwaystomodelandpredicttheperformanceofcomputerchipdesignswiththegoalofmakingthemmoreproductiveandefficient.CookreceivedPresidentialhonorsforresearchincomputerarchitectureconductedinconjunctionwithSandiaNationalLaboratories.

The College of Engineering at NMSU was selected to be the first Telemetering Center of Excellence in the United States by the Inter-national Foundation for Telemetering. The center provides research opportunities in the study of advanced communications systems and technologies.

Engineering Technology StudiesEngineeringtechnologystudentsreceiveaneducationinthepracticalapplicationsofengi-neeringprinciples.Theoryanddesigngiveabasicfoundationoftheprincipalsandthenamajorportionoftimeisspentlearningtheapplicationsandskillsrequiredtodesign,buildandtestareasspecifictothediscipline.Thecurriculumincludesmathematics,science,andappliedengineeringandcomputingcourses.Studentscanspecializeincivil,mechanical,informationorelectronicandcomputerengineeringtechnology,withminorsavailableinmanufacturing,renewableenergyandsecuritytechnology.

Civilengineeringtechnologystudentslearntoimplementcurrentcivilengineeringpracticesindesign,constructionandprojectmanagement.Theytakemanyofthesametechnicalsciencecoursesasmechanicalengineeringtechnologystudents,suchasfluids,thermodynamicsandstrengthofmaterials.Civiltechnicalspecialtycoursesincludepropertiesofconstructionmaterials,blueprintreading,surveying,applieddesignofstructures,highwaytechnology,landdevelopmentandinfrastructure,hydraulicsandconstructionmanagement.

Areasofconcentrationforelectronicandcomputerengineeringtechnologystudentsareappliedcircuits,electronicsdevices,computerhardware,computerapplicationandsystemssoftware,programming,networking,digitalsystemsandsecurity.

Mechanicalengineeringtechnologystudentsreceiveinstructioninadiverserangeofstudy,includingthepropertiesofmaterials,fluidflow,thermalenergy,forces,objectsinmotion,mechanisms,manufacturingprocessesandrobotics.Studentslearnhowtodesignmechani-calsystemsusingdrafting,designandanalysissoftware.

Research HighlightStudentspursuingtherenewableenergytechnologyminoraredesigningavarietyofnovelapplications.Onestudentprojectinvolvedthedesignofasolar-poweredwellpumpforlivestockwatering.Inanotherproject,studentsdesignedasolar-poweredbusstopsignfortheNMSUAggieTransitsystem.ThebussignhasalitdisplayboxforbusschedulesandaprogrammableLEDmessageboardpoweredentirelybysolarenergy.

Engineeringtechnologygraduatesareproblemsolvers,creativethinkersandinnovators.Theirabilitytoapplyengineeringprinciplesandconceptsinspecializedareasenablesthemtodomanythings,suchasmanagingtheconstructionofhighways,buildings,orwatertreatmentplants;enablingbusinessestomaximizeefficiencythroughtheuseofcomputers;anddesigningandtestingnewproducts.

Mechanical Engineering StudiesAtNMSU,mechanicalengineeringstudentsreceiveathoroughfoundationinsolidmechanics,thermalsciences,fluidmechanics,materialsscience,engineeringanalysis,engineeringdesign,andthemathematicalandcomputationalmethodsengineersusetosolveproblems.Mechanicalengineeringstudentslearntousemodernexperimentalanddataanalysistechniques.Theydevelopskillspertinenttothedesignprocess,includingtheabilitytoformulateproblems,thinkcreatively,communicateeffectively,synthesizeinformationandworkcollaboratively.Throughlaboratorywork,theygainexperienceinusingstate-of-the-artcomputationaltools.

Research HighlightMechanicalengineeringresearchatNMSUincludesprojectsinwildfiresimulation,behav-iorofcompositefoamandothermaterials,robotics,biomechanics,fluiddragandvortexdynamics,structuralvibrationsandhealthmonitoring,designoptimizationandvalidationofcomplexsimulationmodels.Theseandotherprojectsprovidestudentstheopportunitytoworkoncutting-edgetechnology.

The mechanical engineering department at NMSU has been offering degrees for more than 100 years and awarded the first-ever engineer-ing degree in the state of New Mexico.

Surveying EngineeringDefiningboundariesandmeasuringlandhavebeenanimportantpartofhumanendeavorsincethebeginningofrecordedhistory.Whetherdeterminingtheshapeofanationorspecify-ingthepathofanewhighway,ourworldisdefinedthroughsurveying.Surveyingengineersanalyze,designandexecutesurveyingandmappingprojects.Inadditiontoknowledgeofthemathematicalandcomputationalmethodsinvolvedinsurveyingmeasurementandanalysis,surveyorsmustalsohaveanunderstandingofthelegalprinciplesofboundarylocationandthelawsrelatedtoboundariesandlanduse.

Surveying Engineering StudiesSurveyingengineeringstudentslearnthescientific,mathematicalandengineeringprinciplesofsurveying,alongwiththelegal,politicalandsocialcontextofsurveying.Theyalsostudythere-sponsibilitiesandethicsofsurveyingprofessionals.Theylearnhowtocollect,analyze,interpretandapplysurveydata.NMSUsurveyingengineeringgraduatesarepreparedforlicensurebythestateinwhichtheywork.

Research HighlightSurveyingengineeringfacultyandstudentsareconductingworkfortheU.S.BureauofLandManagementtoconvertpreviouslycollectedpubliclandssurveysystemrecordsintomodern-izeddigitaldata.Studentsareactivelyinvolvedinthisproject,whichisexposingthemtothetechnicalissuesinvolvedwiththeabstraction,manipulation,analysisandsubdivisionoftown-ships.

NMSU is the only college in New Mexico offering a surveying engineering degree program.

Engineeringcollegestudentsareinvitedtojoinawidearrayofengineeringandcivicactivities.Studentsattendtheregionalandnationalconferencesoftheirrespectiveorgani-zationswheretheyhavetheopportunitytobuildprofessionalcontacts,attendjobfairsandnetworkwithotherstudentsandengineers.Manydifferentleadershipconferencesandscholarshippossibilitiesareavailable,andstudentswithstrongacademicrecordsmaybeinvitedtojoinnationalengineeringhonorsocieties.MembersofstudentorganizationsalsoserveastutorsandmentorsintheFreshmanMentoringProgram.
