GRADUATE PROGRAMS ADMISSIONS PROCESS

One application is reviewed by both the University of Utah Office of Graduate Admissions and the College of Nursing.

Successful applicants must first meet the admissions requirements of the University of Utah, and then meet the requirements set forth by the College of Nursing.

Applicants are recommended for acceptance by the College of Nursing and receive official notification of admission by the University of Utah Office of Admissions.

Completed graduate admissions application including submission of official transcripts from ALL previously attended institutions of higher education

Current resume or CV Three (3) professional references Original written statement of research goals and interests to

provide evidence of a match with the research expertise and interests of College of Nursing faculty mentors

Sample of professional writing (manuscript, report or thesis—preferably published; employment-related writing may be submitted)

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR PHD IN NURSING

Official GRE scores sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to the University of Utah – Score must not be older than five years– Favorable GRE scores are greater than the 50th percentile on verbal

and quantitative tests and greater than 4.0/6.0 on the analytic writing test.

Verification of licensure as an RN or APRN (if applicable) An interview conducted by two College of Nursing faculty Highly qualified applicants with strong potential who match

faculty research interests

DUAL DNP – PHD IN NURSING

• Prepares students for a dual role in research and advanced clinical practice in primary care.

• Students can choose their specialty track for advanced practice from four primary care areas:– Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)– Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)– Certified Nurse Midwifery (CNM)– Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)

• The dual program requires full-time (nine credit hours minimum per term) enrollment for five years.

• Applicants must submit two separate applications and be accepted by both programs in order to enroll as a dual DNP-PhD student.

Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale

Each academic department or graduate program may establish additional or more stringent admissions criteria in addition to the minimum required by the University of Utah Graduate School.

Graduate application to the University of Utah If you have applied before, you will need to create a new application

with a different email Copies of transcripts from each post-secondary college and

university regardless of whether or not a degree was earned The CON recommends uploading official transcripts as they are easier

to evaluate and process It is the applicant’s responsibility to upload legible transcripts

MS & DNP GOAL STATEMENT

The goal statement should communicate – Your passion for the profession and the fit for the specialty

track to which you are applying – How your professional goals will be achieved with an

advanced degree– That you understand and are prepared to handle the

academic rigor of graduate studies – Your understanding of the DNP role

There is no required format. Please keep to 1-2 pages.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Professional or academic endorsements that address your commitment to the nursing profession, leadership abilities, analytical thinking, intellectual independence.

At least one letter should be written by someone who has supervised you during your hands-on healthcare experience and can address your future ability to function as a nurse leader.

Meet with your referee to talk about your goals, the specialty track, and what you want reflected in your letter or recommendation.

Encourage referee to upload a separate letter in addition to completing the online recommendation form. Letters can be uploaded before the December 1 deadline.

PHYSIOLOGY PREREQUISITE

Required if your BS in Nursing graduation date is prior to 2015.

Required if you did not complete an upper division (3000 level or higher) course as part of your undergraduate curriculum.

Course must be completed with a minimum B grade.

Prerequisite may be taken during application process but must be completed with a grade reported before fall semester begins.

University of Utah offers NURS 5905 Clinical Physiology online in Spring and Summer semesters. Course would be taken as a Non-Degree Seeking Student.
